jagds are pretty cool all around breed for hunting with no specific thing theyre great at besides what BAMAMAN mentioned blood trailing. But they fall short when up against other scent hounds.Theyre great at catching if your catching baby hogs, bulldogs are unmatched.AS FAR AS TERRIER GOES the jagds no more terrier than our bulldogs or an airedale for that matter. The only true terriers are fell terriers, patterdales, rat terriers and some jacks. To be a true terrier the dog must fit in a fox hole, somethinng evan a fox terrier cant do.lol.Succesfull hunters stick to the patts for groundwork, bulldogs for catch and hound dogs to scent.I dont know of a better runner than a sight hound, why change what works? The jagd is a designer breed be the jack of all trades, master of none.

Lakeland, Borders still doing a bit..wasn't some fell terriers bred into the jagd terrier back in the 1930's but the progeny proved to be to game for the Germans....

I'm getting a Patterdale in a few weeks. Mostly Nuttall blood. The parents are down from proven stock, and they are proven themselves. Both are very good hunters. I think I'm done with bulldogs. Although I still have love for them. But I have found a new passion.

I had 3 Jagd terriers at the same time...very intelligent, very fast, strong prey drive, very tough for their size. One of my males got a little brave one day and decided to try to take away a dead crow from my Presa Canario. That wasnt too smart lol...but he survived to hunt another day. Great little dogs

Jagd or Patterdale born for HUNT only, if you do not hunt , dont buy this type of dogs!
I've 3 patt at home , I hunt every weekend!
Buy a dog made for hunt only for the "name" or because you like his reputation , for me it's not a good deal for you, and for the dog!

  16. I had a Jagdterrier x Mountain Cur...very intense little dog, by far the most hyper dog I have ever owned. Good nose, about the same as a pure Mountain Cur (less nose than a hound, better nose than a bulldog). Compared to my hounds and curs, he had more stamina, he could hunt for 25 miles and not be tired. Quick and smart, lots of grit, BAD at fighting other dogs for no reason. He only lived to be 3 yeards old.

    Jagdterrier, Fearless Little Hunter

The Jagdterrier is a German working terrier. It is essentially a hunting dog that can hunt above and below ground. The jagdterrier dog largely hunts all game including badgers, foxes, raccoon dogs, wild boars, rabbits and tracks blood trails of deer that are wounded during hunting.

Jagdterriers have a remarkable place in the hunting dog history in Germany. These dogs were bred with the pure intention of introducing into the world a pure bred hunting terrier. Sources of jagdterrier information reveal quite an interesting bit of jagdterrier history. These hunting dogs were mass produced in Germany, with very little allowance for any kind of genetic blemish. Dogs with any kind of genetic defects were euthanized, to avoid any kind of flaw in the genetic makeup. By 1951, two female Jadgterriers came to US with their owner Max Theil Sr. These dogs were not very popular in the US as America already had very well trained hunting dogs like pit bulls and dogs that were bird hunting dogs. Today with more information available on these dogs their popularity has greatly increased. It is primarily for their ability to perform in different forms of hunting and retrieval methods.

This dog breed is typically black and tan, with the tan sometimes being the color of fawn on the muzzle and undercarriage. The Jadgterrier can grow to 15.5 inches tall. Females can weigh up to almost 19 pounds while the male dog can weigh up to 22 pounds. The coat of a Jagdterrier can be smooth, broken or hairy. The tail can be cropped to 2/3rd its original length though this is not a requirement for the breed. It is a stockier dog as compared to the Fox terrier and has button ears.

The Jagdterriers make good pets but it is essential to remember that they are essentially a hunting breed that have a strong sense of tracking and finding prey. They can be distrustful of strangers, with an irritable terrier temperament. The Jagdterrier will not always be good around children and tend to be a one-master dog, as most hunting dogs are. It also has a propensity to dig. This dog can display very high energy levels and a hyperactive disposition. This dog is most certainly not a dog meant for an apartment. This dog needs a house and space to run (and dig!). This breed is largely a healthy breed due to its superior breeding program. Jagdterrier puppies are adorable as are most puppies and jagdterrier prices are quite moderate.

I have been importing jagds for years... I have some with a 13 inch chest span and some that are much bigger. They don't run tracks like hounds true enough... but they are terriers. That said I have sent several to hound guys, and most were professional hunters. According to them it isn't all that uncommon to see them beat hounds to the tree. It isn't their nose that gets it done, it's their hunt drive. But any terrier that can push jack rabbits through cactus in July here.... just north of hell... has more scenting ability than you seem to give them credit for. I hunted them through a drought that killed over a million Texas cattle and never found myself wanting or needing a hound. They will work to ground as well as any other breed and out locate them every day of the week. They will blood track and retrieve nearly anything you need them to. They will stay with a hog for hours... and they work in thick brush better than anything else I have ever hunted. I'm not selling them....I only wanted to give them the credit they deserve.
