My dad was in the Navy and said that at least on one occasion they were served horse. He could tell it wasn't beef because it was darker and redder than beef.

Fanatical Animal Rights Terrorists made it illegal in California to eat cat, dog and horse meat. I see nothing wrong with eating any species as long as it is humanely slaughtered or roadkill, though the only land animals I would knowingly eat are ruminants.

On the other hand, were I in a starvation situation I would eat practically anything, though I would likely draw the line at human.

Ah, harness racing. I used to bet on live harness racing at Los Alamitos. In the 90s I went to Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita, but I cannot bring myself to give any dough to Santa Anita while horses at it are dropping like flies.

I love the ponies but I hate Harness Racing. I pretty much grew up at Belmont Park in NY thanks to my grandfather. I don't bet them much since I left NY over 20 years ago.

It is definitely baffling. I can't tell you how many live races I've seen over the years and I never remember a horse breaking down on the track. I do remember more than a few jockeys getting thrown off.
I have no clue what could be wrong at that track but there is obviously something wrong. If I was an owner I'd be scared shitless running my horse at the Breeders Cup......being it is the greatest racing day in all of horseracing with the best horses in the world.

I remember East NY being one of the worst neighborhoods I was ever in back in the late eighties, early 90's. My close friends sister and BIL lived there and it was rough, although I heard it is completely different now.
I'm guessing you spent a lot of time at Aqueduct also?
We used to do Aqueduct in the winter, Belmont during the spring and fall meets, and then head up to Saratoga for a few days in the summer. Good times and some good fishing up by Saratoga.

True. If I were starving I would eat ANYTHINHG edible. I used to be an athlete so I have been conditioned from a young age to eat healthy. However in difficult situations self preservation is going to win out.
Got a couple dogs here of different breeds that can put food on the table. One is an expert on rabbits, got some hog specialists as well and even one that got a dear once. I wouldn't be eating my dogs!
Be careful about eating rats. People try to poison them all the time and you don’t want to be eating poisoned meat (after a dog has caught a rat is usually wrecked anyway).
