To cull or not to cull?

Say for instance you have a dog or b$!@ that has ALMOST everything you desire in your bulldog. The dog in question may have a defect such as a curled tail, skins really irritable, offset ears, or severely under or over shot. Other than the minor or major flaw it's a great dog where it needs to be. What do you do fellas, do you try and cross the problems out or cull the animal for fear of passing the problem on? All answers will be greatly appreciated

First, not here, but to yourself. State the purpose of the dog. Concentrate on what you want the dog to do not what he is suppose to look like. If he can do what you want him to do then he is not a cull. If one of the things you listed prevents him from performing it is a reason to cull. Not because he looks a certain way but because he can't perform.

If he does what you asked, and it time to breed, find a partner that is closely or somewhat related that does what is asked as well, but does not have the defect you do not like.

Really simple explanation for a very complex topic, it can get much deeper. S

Well spoken Slim.... I feel you, I'm not worried about cosmetics, performance ONLY. Thanks for the response. The dog in question is bred tight, was truly concerned with the mouth in this case. Overbite, just not as firm as the others but more than willing to please me. Thanks again..good clean member from the family sounds good..

I have one that's undershot more than I'd prefer. Not a big deal to me. If she gets bred I'll consider that in picking a stud though.

Yeah treezpitz, If she deserves to be bred, I will select the best stud for her with the same traits only cleaner in the areas needed.

If you have a great dog then you have what you want ,never worry about the best looking dog that is perfect to look at Maybe for some reason it works . This is not a dog show or a paper fight for that matter The best dog is the best dog ..

  9. most of those undesirable traits are most likely recessive but also are many of the desirable ones too. Careful crossing though as you are jumbling up the cards again and may loose the good traits as well. I would make sure you breed it to a dog that doesn't have the skin problem or overbite but still something that is some what related or at least a proven cross. Also how you breed it will depend maybe on if you want brood stock or performance dogs with more hybrid vigor. In regards to bite, a little undershot aint a bad thing really for a working dog.

To me there is only three maybe four reasons to cull......human aggression... Being a cur....and major health defects

She's around 27 months now and at this time two dogs are coming into play that I like. An uncle and a cousin, these two dogs I like as well. Now I have to decide which I like the most of the two. While in no rush to breed there could be another in the line up in the future that's showing promise.

I'm not gonna cross her if I can help it, trying to linebred on some dogs in her with them while adding a pinch of blood I like. I will be honest I could find other studs in the world but using some of my stock will let me know if they can produce or not....I know I know I know lol.. nothing fails but a try. I feel like what I'm adding is needed as well.
