SBT could compete but it will take a whole lot of time and money.......30lbs and under with long hunts. There would be a hell of a lot of culling with only a few dogs reaching maturity. 4 families that can hunt will have to be found and line bred with no out crosses so that a viable gene pool can be created. SA & US dogs would need to be sourced.

This would be no mean feat..........best of luck :)

if one was to undertake the chore...
first hundreds and hundreds of good physical specimens would have to be sourced and raised to maturity.
are there really that many "correct" staffords in the uk to even start such a project?? they sure are not here in the usa.

I agree with much said here BUT I can't say I like some of the more Whippety Sporting Staffs I see either.... the breeds name is Staffordshire BULL Terrier and I think they should show some bull quailtities just more moderate then todays show staffords and a bit more leggy as well. Its all a metter of opinion I guess.
It would be nice to see this discusion / sharing of opinions go on without the "bad mouthing". Not very constructive.

As time passes breeds will change it is inevitable. The Eng.Bulldog has finally been reviced.... about time !

I believe this talk about bull and terrier type is something that began after 1935. I can´t understand this obsession with the breeds conformation. Look at the APBT, there´s a huge difference in looks and size.

On the other hand I can understand why some people criticize the modern show staffords conformation. When a dog has trouble running in the show ring a hot summer day then something must be wrong.

Yes to my dispare I have seen some gasping for air on a hot summer day.... some not all. Usually Bully males even when fit. Most KC staffords will be just fine though.

I am more on the overly bully ones having restricted movement and so on. To the utrained eye a heavily musculed dog looks impressive. Throgh a dog man's eyes... he sees limitations.

But what about the whippety ones I mentioned.... is that a proper stafford.... looks like a StaffordXWhippet cross bred just to do the A-fram and 60 meter dash. any comments here????

    just curious is all

I think you should look at it from a historical point of view. How did the stafford look back in 1935? They differed in size and looks and there were dogs that looked more whippet like. As long as the dogs performed well they earned their right to be bred.

I don´t think that you should look at the conformation at all when it come´s to deciding what a proper stafford is.

why do people stick whippet into the mix just for agility and the related sports? my bitch is like shit of a shovel and has out paced and gone for longer then a few whippets when we've been out and about on a walk, but on a very hot july day she just doesnt want to know and will go sit in the shade :dogdrink:

I have read that in 1935, 38 or when ever, they chose a bully type dog (gentel man jim as we all know) to write up a breed standard... maybe b/c this was the time dog fighting was banned the the bully type were the least capable of this.... just a thought.

Also if you look at Gentelmen Jim compared to todays kc SBT.... he is more leggy and not as bully though far from a whippet like stafford.

I think all the breeds with BULL in them have a large type range within its own breed. Its just the way this type of dog is. And of course the purpose of their breeding show or go. Just my thoughts

LOL most dog I know will go piss off int the shade on a hot sunny day.... smart if you ask me. BUT some breeds will be panting and snoring for air.... sitting in the shade... not good

what this mean: " like shit of a shovel "

I don´t look for anything in particular. I just wanted to question this obsession with the dogs conformation that is so common in the stafford world. Especially among the people that say they prefer staffords of the working type. The market is flooded by peddlers selling their dogs as irish/athletic/working/old-type or whatever they may call them. And the one thing these peddlers have in common is that they are breeding dogs to look like they are of the working type. Buying a dog from these breeders is actually like buying a Ferrari with a Volvo engine.

shes quick off the mark when sprinting, like flinging shit off a shovel, it flies off really quickly......

Aha... OFF a shovel... good one. Well it all depends on what they have been eating......LOL. Yes Staffords are at top speed real quick and as long as long as what they are doing is fun they will not stop ....and do it all alone all day too don't need to coach them along.... funny little dogs

NORSEMAN I see where your where you're coming from but here is a scenario; two staffords, equal in all respects except conformationally, one is barrel chested. short backed with broad head and short muzzle, the other has a deep chest with a longer back and a more rangy leggier build, he also has a longer muzzle with a less pronounced stop. Now, hypothetically of course, who's your money on?

what a bunch of horse shit its been said on this page, this thread should be cleaned up. now the name "bull" is becuase the stafford should be bully looking, holly shit, heard it all!
those whipetty looking ones would make a short meatball with legs look bad in any given task.

going by some avatars i see what kind of staffords few may like, what i shame!!!

tamthebam.... In a pit I would of course have my money on the dog that was able to bite its own ass.

But I don't fight my dogs. from what you you describe I thik I would like some thing in between.... alittle more on the sporty side.
