every KEEP depends on the dog. The same "keep" may not work on 2 different ones. Let's start putting suggestions down to show some of the different ways of proper conditioning of dogs in "keep". i.e. food intake, type of food and feeding schedule, stamina work, power work only some suggestions please as I will not let all my secrets out hahaha

    Just put down some suggestions

hours of hand walking, nothing better for u or ur dog. feed i believe fish would be the best cause it is almost pure source of raw protien. and u could feed ur dog alot of fish without it gaining an ounce of fat. i would say to contact j. long about nutrition and his fish. this guy has definetly put his time in researching nutrients for dogs.

Im definately old school and there is no such thing as enough road work. I find mill work is important also but I have seen alot of people overheat a dog on the carpet mill and nearly lose a dog. If you can work your dog up to about 45 minutes on the carpet mill he is in damn good shape. I never liked a slat mill other than for building wind.

from talking to a couple of conditioners, it seems that u need all 3 hand walking, carpet mill, and slate mill kinda in a crosstraining type deal. but was told hand walking is the cheapest most reliable way to bring a dog in shape although it is 10x more work for the conditioner. the best slate mill i ever seen was the redriver curly mill those things are definetly a peice of art and worth every penny they ask for one.

Hand walking is honest work but it is time consuming and yes if you have a slat mill you can get a good 1 1/2 hours easy and you arent killing yourself either but the handler has to be in shape also and I guess that is why I like old fashioned honest road work. I will take a dog to the woods and I will keep a pocket full of rocks so when he or she starts to get bored I can throw rocks into the bushes and they will run looking for whatever it was.

I use alot of road work with and with out weights, an electric mill for 25-30 min. and springpole/ flirtpole work. All times depend on where I'm at with the dog. The Nutritional factor is High protein and not too much fat.

i used to have a e-mill and i would put the speed on about 5-6 mph (a nice swift jog) and i kept it next to the pc so i was right there while my dogs were on it rather than sitting in the garage bored watching the dog. but i started mine at 30 minutes and buildt up 10 minutes a week (3minutes every other day and stated them out monday at a full ten minutes more than the previous week) the one thing i cant stress enought is make sure u walk ur dog a good 30 minutes prior to any type of mill work to FULLY empty out or u will have a bunch bunch of stinky soft serve flying off the back of the mill. also once a week i would shake talc powerd over the mill just as a try lubricant for the belt. but i sold it too a friend as i wanted to look around for something i liked better so i sold it off for 50 bucks.

I have used just about everything in the past to condition my dogs but an ol timer taught me the best I've found.

Get you a tank or an old church baptismal and fill it with water. Make a harness for your dog (or buy one). Put loops on the front and back of the harness for lift points. Get u a 4x4 wooden post and tie short ropes coming down to attach to the harness so you can lift your dog. Lift the dog and place in the tank or baptismal. Your tank has to be deep enough for your dog to swim and your rope short enough to hold him in place.

Start out with a short workout and work your dog up to 30 minute swims at least 3 times a week. Feed Black Diamond to your dog while training him and you will produce a lean, mean, killing machine.

This method will create muscle mass on your dog like you have never seen before! What I like about it most is that you don't worry about overheating your dog and it works every muscle in his body.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

Anyone here a fan of the Jenny???
Some flirtpole and some ball work are an easy way to build up some wind sprints into your dog, and the dogs love it....

I didn't mean to imply the water trough is the only way I work my dogs. I love a flirt pole and mills also have their place. Your workout has alot to do with what you are conditioning the dog for. (looks, hunting, etc). I use a flirt pole for my own enjoyment as well as the dogs conditioning. I just love being with my dogs.

I rollerblade at least 6 mi. each day. I also use a mini bike for sprints. Obviously we own a lot of acreage which makes this possible. We also use a flirt pole consistantly and swimming when the weather is extreme! We feed raw food during conditioning with some flax and vitamins e, a, and c, as well as corn oil. Dogs are worked 5 days on/ one day rest.

very good info, if you want we might be able to cut the keep out and save it as a sticky or something so it wont get lost in the mix as time progreeses.
    take care

All those suggestions are great.... I work my dogs with a mixture of Flirt Pole, Hand Walk 3 to 6 hours, Swimming, some Spring pole on rest days..., And Mill Work (using Maximum Stress Keep by The Mill Maker). 7 weeks conditioning... 2 weeks Pre-conditioning.

With feeding... I give them a good Hi-Protein performance type dog food with around 29-30% Protein! and I ONLY give them NATURAL MADE supplements the HERBAL ones you can get on Body Health Shops! I tell you they work best on your dogs... quite expensive tho'. But it won't overdoze your dogs and won't intoxicate him either... I feed after 30mins of rest after work out. Well... that's all that I can safely spit out... the others are quite confidential. eheheh LOL!
