I have heard alot about the Eli dogs having heavy mouth and are strong physical dogs but they dont have the heart or wind for long hunts.
What in your opinion is the best blood to add to correct some of the short Cummings the Eli dogs have?

so if i understand you correctly, if you have a dog the is short winded you would put it over a dog that is long winded?

You're generalizing about every dog that has some Eli in it. Which one of his offspring? Their offspring - their offspring - their offspring...????? That's a long dead dog.

In general yes ..But it goes deeper than that..Just take your time and study .Everyone thats new ,first thing they do is buy a bloodline and cross it with another.Take your time and go to some conformation shows and get to know people and see what you like ..Don't worry bout the bloodline. And also just study as much as you can.

thanks for the info, not planning on breeding my dogs any time soon just looking into what would work best should they prove worthy to breed.
i have very tightly bred Frisco dogs by way of his sons Tattoo(POR) and Scar(ROM) that were imported to South Africa
so was just wondering what would be the best outcross

Once upon a time. I think much of the short comings in Eli dogs to run distance was corrected by crossing them over Bolio dogs which added a bit of ability to go into a defense mode during work which would enable them to catch a bit of wind while being on defense. The reason Eli dogs aren't able to run long distances is because of the "way" they run/work because they are predominantly but not as a rule sprint dogs so they put a lot of physical, energy expending effort, into the way they work and this is why they tend to loose it in the deep end as they tended to tire or exhaust themselves out by being and offensive high pressure worker rather than a alternating defensive/offensive energy conserving worker. Doesn't mean they are not game but they tended to be bred to destroy the opponent in as short order as possible with hard mouth and massive physical strength, power and wrestling ability. To correct this lack of distance breeders made crosses with Redboy/Jocko dogs and Redboy dogs and in some cases Bolio dogs and other bloodlines that could run long distances to achieve a better balanced working dog that could do both defense and offence during work. The Eli dogs were used as working dogs in the distant past because they have many of the traits or characteristics that are needed or required in a working dog but the crosses worked much better in the pit. A long time ago in the distant past when they still used to fight dogs a good Eli dog would smash the opponent to pieces and his gameness would never have been brought into question because that's how they used to win. That being said, you do get game Eli dogs but remember Eli died a very long time ago and there's been a lot of selective breeding with those lines since then so one would assume that there are better dogs now.

I wouldn't consider your dog "Eli." Has a lot of Frisco and a lil Limey. I'm not sayin there is anything wrong with it, just not "Eli." I think we, all of us, as newbs think, "A fill in the blank dog to a fill in the blank dog will get me a fill in the blank. Those old crosses are just examples of what worked, IMO. Bolio/Eli was/is a great cross, just an example. It started with good individuals bred to good individuals, usually. When they did the cross back in the day the dogs were much closer to the "namebrand" dogs we talk about today. I think someone said, "this dog has what mine doesn't. If I breed em, maybe my dog will get that and keep this!" They weren't lookin for a specific cross, I think they looked for a specific dog or trait. Like Bama said look to the individual and the family, then make decisions. You can't jus say Bolio/Eli= good dogs or RBJ/Jeep= good dogs. The old saying breed the dogs not the paper holds VERY true!! Most of us have learned this the hard way. I'm still learnin as most of us are. I feel like when. You stop learnin when you're dead, physically or mentally. I just can't/couldn't afford to keep learnin the hard way

No disrespect man but are you even reading and then comprehending what you're reading? Because this has been explained to you a few times already but surprisingly you just quoted somebody saying to worry about the dogs instead of the general bloodline but it's clear you didn't pay attention to what he said.

It may have worked for somebody because the dogs that they were breeding went good together. But if you have dogs that don't go well together, it doesn't matter if it worked for others or not, it's not likely to work for you.

As others have said, worry about the dogs up close instead of the general bloodline.

With all of that out of the way, the question is what modern day eli strain is know for what? Best all around? The strain with the most mouth? Wind? Game? T-bud crossed with Halls would be my pick.

Your not really narrowing it down anymore than the OP did..Lots of dogs between those 2 families.

No, I was not trying to narrow it down just saying that the halls t-bud crosses I have seen are pretty good all around dogs. The T-bud crosses I like are the Maya hounds which is maloneys crosses. Halls yard is pretty much the same, based off of Spike to vixen which had Gansta,Cobra and Rock steady. Shorty is the other which was also bred to Maya and had Shorty Pearl, Brujo, Cleo and Rock Crusher and every dog he has are from these breedings. So none are Eli hounds under the microscope because they are all 50/50 crosses, I believe that is why they are good hounds.......... If you believe it or not that's how he says they are bred. I guess that is how I like my eli.

A lot of people try to make the most simplest thing difficult. If the line was winning once before then the blueprint for the line is all ready there. Do u follow what I am getting at? If u get A Maverick dog from F.B yes I sed Maverick not Eli! If u get a Maverick dog and u don't c reputable traits in the one u got then of course u are lacking something this doesn't mean you go out and get the first long winded 3way cross u can get your hands on. I c it all the time " ooooo my dog is lacking I need. Rboy, joco, Mayday or ooooo my dog dont have any mouth I need a Hall's, eli, alligator. No

This is what u do STICK to the BLUEPRINT that is what a pedigree is really for. ROM, POR, dont mean shit if u can't keep your pedigree up.
Im tired of all these fad and flavors of the Month breeding.
I have seen Eli and Maverick hounds hunt for hrs with no problems. If u dont know how to put a pedigree together on paper and by eyesight then stick to the BLUEPRINT u were given by the breeder. Do be afraid to ask 100 questions I don't care who thay are. There needs to be a purpose for the breeding besides $.

Eli dogs can stand alone with any bloodline alone or broken up.
