  1. what is meant by a "hard keeper"

I have a good idea of what it means , but would like someone to describe a dog that is a hard keeper , does it mean HA or just a very intense hound all around?

For example, a dog that would chew it's chain would be considered a hard keeper because it would ruin it's all it's teeth.

Dogs suffocating themselves running on the chain, etc.. otherwise takes extra care.

Hard keeper means chewin up kennel, bowls, etc. in my experience most of my hard keepers have separation anxiety so they go crazy chewin everything up running their chain or pacing their kennel back and forth all day. I usually bring them inside or closer to the house, give them more attention, and give them a good workout or walk them everyday and a kong ball with canned dog food or peanut butter in it to keep them busy and it calms them down. I have a real hard keeper he'd pace his kennel all day and chewed up his dog house and hang from the top of his kennel and ruined all his teeth by the time he was old enough for school so I moved him from the farm to our house and keep him in the garage and work him on the spring pole and flirt pole with a good walk 4 or 5 times a week and he don't chew anything now. Hasn't chewed up one thing in our garage. Not saying that'll work for every dog but has for most of my hard keepers over the years

Just what it says. The dog is hard to keep. Could be a chewer, digger, barker, rock or chain biter or any other reason that would make a dog hard to keep and easier to get rid of.

Get rid of a dog cause he's a hard keeper? That's how you know when you have a good one, am I right realpitsnobull? Crazy ass dogs that attacks their water bowls and running lawn mowers.lol I'm just messin with ya, I gotta get back to work I'm turning into my wife with her Facebook shit since I've been laid off. Spending too much time on this board talkin shit. Don't get rid of dog until he or she quits. My best dog was since I got into these dogs was a hard keeper I'm glad I brought her into the house to live instead of getting rid of her. Just saying.. That pain in the ass might end up being that ace you've been looking for unless of course you're into peddling pups then just keep the ones with the pretty papers that don't bark and eats its own shit so you have less work to do and it's a lot easier on ya

Re: what is meant by a "hard keeper"

I didn't say I would get rid of one because of it. A good one is a good one and there is always a way to make the dog a little bit less hard to keep. Most people who just keep the breed as a pet which is probably 95% or higher of the population of people who own these dogs do not want a hard keeper. They are a pain in the ass most times and cost much more $$ in keeping then a dog who isn't so hard to keep. They, Both hard and easy keepers have about as much of a chance of being a good as the other or better. Different strokes for different folks I guess. It would have to be an exceptional dog for me to want to keep one. personally but to each their own, if one wants to deal with that and has the time for it then more power to em... ;)

I don't think realbulliesallbullshit is going to respond that ID has been put on permanent time out.

The thing with a hard keeper is he will teach younger dogs that are not hardkeepers to be hardkeepers. The younger dogs always watch the older dogs and develop alot of thier habbits. Now just from my experience I have had better luck to keep a hard keeper out of the younger dogs view.I am surely not saying dont keep a hardkeeper. But you can keep him from teaching the younger dogs those bad habbits of his.

I hear people say I got a yard full of hard keepers.I always wonder how many were born that way?And how many developed these bad habbits by watching a hardkeeper?...A hardkeeper is born a hardkeeper. He didnt get that way by watching a older dog.
