The land I hunt mostly on is mainly fields, and where they come out of the bush to the field I don't have permission to hunt on so I usually wait in the round bails and watch use a good rest and hit them while there in the field grazing in the early hours. I have only got one deer at close range and that was with my .45colt lever gun 225 grain 1200fps handgun cartridge. For the long shots I use a Tikka heavy stainless barrel 300 win mag it kicks hard enough for me that's for sure the heavy barrel cuts down recoil because of the weight. I would prefer a lesser round but my brother bought it for me for Christmas and it is a very expensive tack driving rifle so I will use it (can hit a 8'' gong at 1600 yards if there is no wind every time on a bench rest). My cousin shot a little spiker buck at 600+ yards with a .243 last year I was with him that's a nice little round. Getting the dear from a distance in a field is no big deal just drive your truck up to it and toss it in. We have lots of moose as well I have never shot one cause most areas are for draw only and I never put in for draws. My brother shot a moose with a .338 win mag that was 50'' across. Moose drop easy. Elk are tuff bastards. I always wanted to go on a big horn sheep hunt that's probably the most real hunt out there. Climb the mountain, spot them before they spot you, take a long shot. pack it out off a mountain. lots of grizzly bear around there as well to watch out for. Its on my bucket list.

I worked with a guy out of town who stayed in his holiday trailer. Anyhow he liked to have a few drinks. One night he was staggering back to his trailer after the bar closed and he sees this little buck by where the trailer was parked. The drunk funny fucker he was started grunting at it and this little bastard stabbed the fuck out of him with his antlers!!! He was trying to hold the antlers while it was coming at him but he fell when he got pushed by the deer backwards into a tree. Same guy shot a fish cop decoy robot deer 3 times with a 8mm mauser he got in big shit for that. He was a riot to work with always had something to say that would make you laugh your ass off.

Since I moved out to the woods I started hog hunting with a buddy of mine and his buddies. It is a rush no doubt. I've never hunted deer or anything else for that matter but it's a lot more intense hunting something that could kill you. Hogs love the water and they love trying to get you and your dogs in the water to try to drown them. Add that with venomous snakes and the water is my least favorite place to catch a hog lol.

Some dogs do well, some don't. I have a couple dogs that didn't do so well because they just wanted to fight the hog. They were grabbing anything they could get a hold of. Face, leg, chest ect.. That will get the dog killed quick on a rank boar. The dogs that are methodical and go for the ear, or some accept cheek, then that is what you want.

GPS tracking collars are a MUST. Anybody who drops a dog without one is stupid. The bay dogs can catch a scent and if they're long range dogs then they can be chasing hogs for miles away. Split bays are exciting and dangerous. That is when you have 2 groups of hogs bayed separately you have to try to get to them both before the bay dogs get in trouble against the group of hogs.

If you happen to lose a dog during a hunt, GPS collars or not it happens, lay down a jacket or piece of clothing where you dropped the dogs at and cross your fingers the dog is at that jacket when you return to check for them. If you ever get the opportunity to go.... do it. I LOVE seeing the dogs work. The bay dogs are amazing to me. Watching them work is worth going in itself. But the rush of heading to the bay while the bay dogs are barking, not knowing what size of hog(s) are bayed is the biggest rush of it all.

Bro, and adult male whitetail in rut will fuck you up, them antlers are far larger than any pigs tusks. Boars are more aggressive by nature however only 4 deaths have ever been recorded because of a boar. Deer kill 120 people annually and believe it or not are concidered the top animal in the US to kill a human.

lol don't think these animals aren't aggressive because of their soft look. When in rut they highly amped up and aggressive as well as not afraid of much of anything when in full rut. They are also very territorial.

Boars dont even make the list. And i can't speak for other states but in PA, you aint going to have no dogs helping you out lol. It's illegal to hunt deer with dogs.

  5. Wow....now thats what i call real proper hunting right there!
shooting them fuckers with a bow!
i do no some one who dose this..and hes exremly skilled...he dose the same movements as you just said.
and he also aims for the hart.
he stalks them like you to and his bush craft and how qiuck he is for a old man(hes 73!)is shocking.
i think his cross bow has 180ft lbs of power.

Im looking in to buying a 80 ft lbs cross bow for small game.(tho i find it impossible to hit even a tree with one)pheasants, partrige,Hear, rabbit, wood pidgion, ducks.
the deer are about 12 miles from here and i aint got a car.not only that, but its illeigal to take deer here if your not one of the rich.not that im botherd about all that,as youve probaly already noticed lol.
but carrying one back from that far with out a car would take days.

If they were more local theyed be in the frezzer lol.

    Very good lean dry meat.
i prefair it to beef or Lamb to be honest.theres just no fat on the thing.
(And meat fat is essential to a poor family like mine)best steaks ever tho man.
I think the smaller species of deer taste a bit like lamb.and the bigger species taste a bit like beef.
people tell me its a strong tasteing meat?-i really dont find this,i find it more of a delicte meat.

The other day when i had the shoulder(ide be lost with out my 73 year old freind-thank you man!)
i let some of the neighbours try some of the meat.and even tho we never got a lot of meat of it,there was still a lot of satisfication seeing the poor people eating the rich mans meat.
the street smelled amazing of it.
it put me in high spirits to say the least.

Not oftern ide get it to be honest.

Keep it up man.all the best

I have a pretty decent Horton crossbow I've had for about 10 years now and never have hunted with it. Only have shot it maybe 3 times at a target. It's a lot heavier than my compound bow is so I never have seen the point in using it. A few months ago I injured a nerve in my non dominate wrist so I'm not even sure if I can pull my string back so this could be the year lol.

Personally I prefer bow hunting. I feel archery is a lot harder and more skill is needed than with a rifle. Most anyone can kill a deer from 100+ yards with a rifle, impossible with a bow. You have to get them with in 40 yards of you with a bow, even less than that in a thick woods environment. I hunt deer, turkey and squirrel with a bow but I also will hunt all of them with a rifle.

Squirrels I have more fun with a shotgun. I'll shoot them out the tree and 2 more times while their falling lmao. I'm vicious with squirrel. One of my favorite seasons. My gun of choice with them is a remmington 870 express 12guage with a modified choke. I typically will use pheasant load rounds.
Lol shotgun hunting don't take much skill at all. Its point and shoot and most likely your going to pepper whatever it is your shooting at but distance shots are also very limited with a shotgun unless your using a slug round. Bird hunting is a real good time. Shooting things on the fly is a real adrenaline rush. I hunt doves, crow, pheasant too.

  7. Shocking that.i was not expecting them to head the list.i was not supprised to see dogs high up on the list...or cattle and horses!-not suprised there,as i have alot of trouble with the fuckers.

Seen vidios of Red Stags rutting and they are bad bastards.
Red are the biggest deer on these isles.biggest wild animal over here.

I think it would take a full pack of hounds/greyhounds and a couple bulldogs and a determand man with a knife to take one..they weigh in at around 25 stone.

Its said to big lurchers can hold one long enough...but i doubt it...maybe 5 big lurchers?

  8. Sounds amazing man.exciting, real, life and death right there in fount of ya.

Working hounds and Bulldogs or some other sort of catch dogs all together is a age old method of hunting.its probs the oldest form of hunting there ever has been.
    Awesome man.
when you say some of the dogs fight the boar-do you ever think there a chance a dog can kill a hog?
Im imagining it would be some dog.
do you prefere bigger dogs for hunting these beasts?

And i gotta ask-whats it taste like???

Gotta be the most ultimate form of hunting.
    thanks for tuning in,
    keep it up!

  9. Lol.Great story bro.
great when ya meet some charictars to do with dogs or hunting.

I would love to hunt boars someday. Love to hunt them with dogs even more. It's on my bucket list. I'm not really a fan of the meat though. I've had it a couple of times at my parents church that has a game dinner once a year. The members of the church that hunt all contribute to the dinner, some of these guys go all over the US and Canada and hunt everything from beaver to bison. There are also raffles for guns, equipment things like that and a speaker who is usually a professional hunter of some sort. 2 years ago was the last time I went to it but 10 bucks to eat about 25 different species of animal is a pretty good darn deal so I try to go every year they have it.

Maybe treez will let me tag along sometime when he goes for boar if I can ever make it to Tx. Lol

See, now isn't this more pleasant conversing than racial topics. :))

and Sheep hunt dose sound very real man.
we have wild Goats over here.
    big nasty fuckers.
the lurchet entusiast J Darcy makes many mentions of taking them with his Lurcher Scooby before the 2005 hunting with dogs act came in.
his stories are facinating on the subject.
i belive hes the only man to right about taking Goats with dogs lol.
and his stories on the matter put more then a tingle down the spine.

It seems reasonable to mention Austrailia and New Zeland when it comes to wild pigs.
theres been a stong tridition in them places for years on pig hunting.
They dont hunt them with hounds and Catch dogs like most of ya do in the States..they coller the dogs up and go find em-and the dogs are meant to fight bay find all at the same time..so it seems relervent to say a "pig dog"in these places is normally a mixture of Cattle dog, diffrent Bull types, and pointers.
courios mix,but one what works well in the rough terrain in them places.
there is a aouthess of a number of books on the subject from NZ called kim Swan.her books are cheap.beyound facinating(i belive miss swan actully lives out in the bush most of time with her pig dogs)
    and really awesome, authentic reading..
i own one of her books called "Pigging"
and its storys from her self and other NZ pig hunters....some of her storys are truly spine tingleing and give a shocking account of how tough it is to hunt hogs in such places-the bush craft of these hunters is first rate.

Lol I always have to buy meat. My regular daily diet consists heavily of beef or chicken. I only eat deer 3 maybe 4 months out of the year tops and I don't get one every year, some years I don't have the time to hunt at all some years the deer outsmart me or I don't get a clear shot at one. I don't waste anything though other than entrails. Most anything else I hunt is dog food.

my dad said the same to me.
    wish ide listend.

    Have you tried the Beaver?
ill try any meat me.its all meat really.
im yet to tast meat i dont like-not fussed on mutten or Hare in a stew.
but theres ways to cook these meats, and they then taste as good as any meats really.
I eat a lot of game.i catch some, but i buy most of it really.
mostly game birds and Rabbits.and if i get the odd deer or Hare-or Goose!then the beers are out and the party starts lol.

I buy a lot of my meat to mate.dose me head in.
my dodgy 73 year old poacher friend is a god send and gives me the game for next to nothing, and game is so deer(lol-no pun there)that i would not be able to afford it with out him.
he also seems to secure a lot of pork and sheep lol.so i ask no questions and take that of his hands to.

Couriosly,as i right this-i ate the last three partriges i had from him the other day-and thru the dogs this mans laing chickens what had stopped laing, and hed culled them-and now i gotta go out and buy meat...

He always shows up when i got no freezer space.but now my freezer is empty-hes no were to be seen?.
    All ways the way man.

I have not hunted in years. It was the greatest thing on the planet as a kid and when I was younger, but in time it passed.

I'm the odd one out in my group of friends. They all hunt. So to defend my honor, (LOL), I take my shots when I can.

When we are at the shop there is a tall cedar tree at the road. I tell them if they crawl up that tree and decide they are hunting green Ford pick up trucks one will eventually happen by and you just blast the shit out of it. Then I get the lesson of all that hunting entails and the difficulties of killing a deer/turkey etc.... I then add if they were real hunters they would drop out of a tree with a spear like Rambo and kill a hog that way. Then I tell them to man up like Rambo. I am heavily out numbered so I quickly get blasted and it goes over like a lead balloon. LOL

I stop just before I truly piss them off because their efforts help feed my dogs thru the colder months.

  17. Im to fucking stoned,,you had me in hyterics with the Rambo part LOL.

  18. Boil it first then fry it(Bob Tovey last of the English Poachers)

Hare dont taste so nice mate-so i tried his method.
they taste as good as any meat now.

Any thing strong tasteing.boil till meats soft.do not put salt or suger in the water whatsoever!
Cut a lemon in half and put that in.a slash of spirit vinigar.
shread meat of bone when soft.fry for a minuet or couple minuets in any oil(lards normally good-onions and garlic to)

Plus with this method the meat is thougherly cooked lol.
its easy to over cook most wild meat.but many people still cook it a little rear for my likeing.

Each to there own,and i wont really moan if the deer is a little pink.
but i dont fancy eating under cooked Beaver LOL.

Anyway it might be worth a try if you consider trying Beaver a third time out lol.

Let me know if you do.

My favorite type of White Tail hunting was using dogs to flush them.Very exciting and growing up as a kid in South Bama that's how we rolled.Got to have enough people to do it.Takes more than 2 or 3 but its a fucking blast.Ive hunted out of tree stands on occasion but I get bored with it.Nothing compares to hunting with dogs for me.

As a kid we would deer hunt in the morning amd make 2 different drives with the dogs and finished around noon.We would Bass fish after lunch ,2 big ass bass ponds. As kids at the end of the day we wore out .We talking 1970s and were not much deer where I live back then so we drove about 40 miles north and thier was plenty. We bought property there and actually our camp house was built over one of the ponds. You could walk out front or back door and bass fish or shoot a buck.It was heaven on earth for me.
