That's a English Setter. Kind of like a big spaniel. From what I have gathered them and German short haired pointers are both great. My brothers buddy has a short haired pointer that's been trained for birds and its as good as any. One of the reasons I would go with the Setter over the pointer is there coat. It gets damn cold up here. But I would be more than happy with either one.

There is people that hunt with falconary birds. I don't know any. My brother at one time was gonna get some kind of little hawk that was pre trained but I think he figured he has enough stuff already on the go. Would be a blast to go out and watch though wouldn't it? My friend years ago lived in a high rise apartment and there was a falcon around or two and a lot of pigeons. We use to smoke dope on his balcony and watch these falcons dive bomb pigeons it was unreal. Looked like they got hit by a missile. Just a puff of feathers left in the air. Good times!

The top dog is a English Setter, Middle is German short haired pointer, Bottom is a cross of the two. I would be happy with any of them. All though I do hunt big game bird hunting is my favorite. The season opens sept 15 so we still have nice days. I love the fall walking through the bush trees are all changed color its my favorite time of the year while it lasts. Big game opens Nov. 1st and by then its usually cold as a witches tit. See I am looking to move out of the city. I live in a very rough neighborhood. I am 50 yards from the worst street in the city and its getting worse. The reason of have stayed is the lady next door is in her 80's and has been a good neighbor and friend for 16 years. My area was not always a shit hole the lady next door has lived there since 1966. She is a widow (Husband died in his 50s from asbestos he was a pipe insulator) and I just couldn't live with myself if a bunch of meth heads moved next to her. She is very good to my dog and my dog watches out for her. But now she is getting a hip replacement and going to a old folks home so I have no reason to stay. So if all goes as planned I will get a couple acres outside the city, get a good bird dog and start doing more of the things I love to do. There is more to life than work and stress I hope and I want to find out before I am a old man.

I've been to Serbia once to hunt boar, been a couple of other times but for different reasons. Like Treez said some dogs just want to fight and that will get them messed up with a serious boar. The ones that hold on are the better hog hunters. I used two dogs (not apbts) they both did well. Female got tusked a bit on her back leg skin hanging but she went back in and secured the bacon.
I'm thinking when I move and have my own land I might catch a wild boar and bring it back alive to keep it penned on the land for... reasons lol.
I used to hunt rabbit a lot with bull greys as well as some other things here and there. Not so much these days. Got one rabbit in the freezer from last year and that's it. Not had time for it. Hopefully that will change.

  6. I think the same to...about the work and stress.

Im a little new to hunting birds to be honest.to hunting in genrel.
but i to am pretty facinated with birds...
    ive never tryed grouse..
but i have caught small amounts of Pheasent.
    Partrige.(the grey ones)
ducks..im not sure witch type they were, but i think Mallard.
    and maybe Khaki..but not sure.
ive tryed a Wood Cock but i never caught it.and it was very good eating.
i always eat Wood Pidgeon..its real good meat.tastes like very lean beef steak i think...its great to just make a fire when your out and cook the pidgeon breast over it.its a real easy bird to breast with out even guting it.
i just pull its breast out and lite a fire have a quick meal..the rest dont get wasted.gets chucked around for the foxes and badgers witch keeps them away from the snears-to some degree..
theres nothing better then fresh wild meat..
and with the way the landscape looks at this time of year as you say.the noise of birds.it just makes it nice to be out there..its not to cold and every thing has dyed back-but not completly.and you can see more.the colors are the best.and the sounds of the leafs and a stronger wind thats about to start soon, all echo as the river starts to flow faster..
    and im just like wooosh..seduced.
and the stress is all gone.for now...and i could live out here.and just forget the world.man must of felt like this at some point, before he became settled perhaps?....its true that man gave up most of his freedome to become civilized..just like the story of the Wolf and dog..dog says to wolf ' what a tough life you lead'.wolf says to dog'ide rather be free then be a slave'.

I no im no great white hunter..
hey you hunt big game and i hunt small game..
but we both still hunt and understand are surroundings..and i find it great talking and very informative to speak with great hunters such as your self..

All the best sir.hope the season goes well for you.

Small game is probably my most favorite season. I hunt squirrel more than any other animal. I hunt doves probably every other year or so. Northern starlings and crows get shot on sight. I also pheasant hunt here and there. Woodchuck too. The only other game here I hunt is Wild Turkey but I probably only get to do that every 4 or 5 years since I save most my days off work for deer season because out of all of them, deer puts the most meat in the freezer. I'll hunt anything I can though when time permits.

  8. Yes Squirrel.i hunt Squirrel and eat it very oftern..Candian greys these ones.
very wild meat is the tree rat.but pretty good eating.
no wild Turkeys around here but the odd escapey lol.
deer by far the best and most substatial.if i could get it more i would.nice pic aswell of the pups with deers head..luxury for a dog indeed!.i could not think of nothing better for em.and you hunt them yourself mostly to..wow man.thats a real great life you lead..and i love hearing all this.

Are wood chuck called goffers and ground hogs??...

not a load to take crows or ravens over here as far as i no..
i got no need to take em and i hate killing stuff i cant eat...but what bad fuckers they are.real smart..and most defintly need controling.
most defintly...they will do some damege if not controled man..i walked in a wood the other day and one just had to go..cheeky, cocky, fucker it was..told the hole wood i was there.lol..
it wont no more thats for sure.
but my god i do admire how cleaver thery are..they are on the higher inteligent list as far as birds go i think..

    All the best AGK..
Hope you bag enough deer throughout the season mate.

Yes ground hogs go by many names. Gophers, grass rats, woodchucks etc.
I don't eat it but the dogs will. Same with Squirrel. Too much work to skin for too little meat for me to bother with most times. I lop their tail off and the rest gets thrown to the dogs whole.

Yes sir, crows and raven are very intelligent birds. I don't shoot anything just to shoot it. If I won't eat it, the dogs do. Every thing gets used here except the deer hides. I always still try to dry out the hide but without a building to keep it salted and dried out It's a challenge that the weather usually wins every year.

Back in the day land owners used to pay me to get rid of all kinds of problematic animals. Usually predators such as foxes or the like. Sometimes rabbits, wanted whole warrens cleared because the rabbits were pests ruining the land and causing horse injuries.
Bulldogs would wreck them if they could catch them, that was the hard part lol.
Anyone ever catch a coyote with an apbt? I'd imagine its much the same as a fox?

German short haired pointers have been the dog of choice in England to work along side hawks for the last 15 years or so there pretty much bred for that job alone here. If it’s a dog for the gun your after then it’s english spaniels all the way as told to me by the Yorkshire hawking club one of my mates is a member....it’s all about what your after as the uk has no shortage of gun spaniels and still export them to fix foreign breeds..

  12. @XLR8 ...theres no way a bulldog will catch a fox on the run..no way mate.
and im imagineing a Cyote to be faster then a fox..not that foxes are fast.they are not..but they are faster then a bulldog or most dogs really on the run..i think if a fox only had ten feet distence between a bulldog it would still out run it.it would most defintly out turn it aswell....
bulldogs cant catch rabbits on a run if they cant catch a fox...but i have caught rabbits that have had mexi with a bulldog..but hell, ive caught mexid rabbits with my bear hand..infact i used to always ring there knecks if ide see one in that state as i hate to see a animal suffer..but i stopped doing this when i realised about 30% of Rabbits recover from this and go back to normel health come winter...if i see one in this state now i hold my feelings back and let the poor bugger suffer with this vile virius, and prey it will be a recoverer.....
mexi is a result of man yet again fiddiling around with stuff..i belive in the last 30 years rabbits have become a lot more imune to this but alas!.man has now found another deadly virus(RHDV2)what will be the finiel death of the rabbit i think..

@ Lrs thanks for the input...
and Spaniels are real nice dogs..can be used with Lurchers to ....like Bob Tovey.
he use the spaniel for pointing and flushing..what ever flushed that ran the Greyhound caught it.what ever flushed and flew Bob shot it.
now that dose sound like a nice combo and nice method of hunting..man.gun or rifel.greyhound or lurcher.spaniel.
Fill the pot with that team..
read that book Lrs.'last of the english poachers'by Bob and his son Brian Tovey...you can download it for cheap..
its a great book..and i learnt some good stuff from reading it.

    @ AGK...
do you feed crows the dogs?
and i dont no nothing about tanning mate..but it sounds fun.
i bet its hard to do..i toyed with the idea of trying to make a hat out of squirrel or rabbit but i just aint got the space and sure aint got the skills...
    try it out mate..
i think youed be able to make a good hunting coat or robe smock type out of a deer hide if you could tan it out.
and i bet it would be better then Gortex lol..
Ha ha youed look the part mate.
    Squirrel hat.
    Deer robe.
haha ide go for it if i could lol..
resorces mate..a man of the wild.

    All the best folks...
hope your season is going well.
    and all stay safe.

Depends on what I shot it with. If I used pheasant load then no. Too many lead BBs to pick out. They usually will get left for the coyotes. I've only shot a hand full of them in my lifetime. They very smart and have extremely good vision. They are also pretty good at staying out of shotgun range.

Lol I couldn't wear anything like that in the woods or some other dumb ass hunter would end up shooting me by mistake.

I've caught foxes with apbt and even with a few good staffs as well way back. Obviously a bull grey has a much better catch rate though lol.

Seen foxes and coyotes take people dogs and cats. Saw one coyote in a video that tried to take a 55 lb pit (pet) bull. I don't know what shocked me more the coyote going for that size dog or the dog running and screaming in terror with the coyote latched on in the back yard. The coyote let go as the dog was dragging it back to back door.
