My girlfriend who tonks has known from 5wks got stung by a spider on the foot in the yard and as she dropped to the floor crying in pain i picked her up to bring her inside and tonka went nuts and was trying to break off his chain to get at me?

is this normal as ive never had this happen to me, once i put her inside he calmed down again??

Im taken back cos he should know better...

he would have been anxious, if she dropped to the ground and you leaning over, probly screaming got him up set. by lunging on his chain, i dont see how that accounts for trying to bite you. second i dond know your dog, how hes bred zilch.
how is he bred mate, maybe i could fill you in a little. pm me if ya want. id be interested to know anyhow. he looked like a nice boy.
some of mine will get a little anxious if im muck'n about out back with the missus or kids, they dont like the idea, i dont suggest you do this, but i was fool'n with the misses and got one of my lads to go let one out the cage, he came charging at me and just stood real close barking and carrying on before pushing his way between us. lol, i had to satisfy my curiousity and if i was going to get bit by an apbt it may as well be mine lol... aint never going to happen around here but lol.

Hard to tell without seeing it. May have been trying to get your GF or you or just trying to check things out. Picking your GF up combined with the crying could have triggered a prey response or a protective response. If there were other people there reacting, that could have played into it too.

You could slowly recreate the trigger by having him on chain and picking her up. If no response, strart walking away, and if still no response have her cry too. May have been all of the above combined with the suddeness and intensity. Figure out what the trigger is and what he is actually trying to do. Based on that, you may want to desensitize him to it. Make sure he doesn't think he is the pack leader of your house cause if he does, he definitely would have wanted to control that situation.

Could have been a fear response too. As D said, we don't know enough.

He's a scatterbred, first 2 generations in his ancestry are proven hunters that i have personally hunted with, beyond that your guess would be as good as mine. From where i was it appeared he would have attacked me the way he was carrying on,
ill try what you guys have suggested and recreate the scenario hopfully over the weekend and see if i can see what happens,
    thanks guys

My pup got protective once when my friend was ruff housing with his kids and they were screaming like crazy. All in good fun but the dog didn't know so he went nuts. Once they stopped ruff housing the dog stopped barking and layed down. Maybe he thought she was getting hurt?

When me and my wife are playin around Hemi always looking like he is going to bite me. I believe he would to if we ever got serious. Good!

Sometimes the dogs dont like us being very physical with each other, probably cause there just not used to it. Just like Hemi said but i doubt they really want to bite they usually just want to intervene.

My brothers male does not let the kids swing on the swing set for some reason, when they go a few feet high he runs in aggressively and gets knocked real hard but it stops the swing. Not worried of him biting the kids but he cant help himself so i always put him inside when they swing.

the dog was acting in defense of your girlfriend. i have had this happen to me in the past with my son(just growling, barking), they defend the weaker person when its people they know. if a stranger was there no doubt your boy would have been trying to kill him.

the dog could have just been excited and wanting to get the other dog. my dogs are f*cking sick, the first sign of weakness and they move in like it's going out of style. bulldogs will be bulldogs.

just because he was trying to get off the chain doesnt mean he was trying to bite u,, he may have just wanted to get invovled in the situation.. i would have had to see it. most pitbulls want to protect ,, and if it was a male dog, they tend to look more after a female of any sort.. so,, really need more info on exactly how the dog was trying to bite u..sounds like he got excited and wanted to help..

just becuse he was having a fit doesnt mean he was going to bite u..

Kind of what I was thinking, probably just stirred up because of all that was going on.But without actually being there to see I don't really have any idea.

He may not have been trying to bite, maybe just trying to investigate and excited because of all of the unfamiliar noise coming from your girlfriend.

My boy bit my friend when he and I were play fighting! So maybe he was expressing protectiveness as stated above.

  13. I'd say being protective. when me and my brothers used to argue (shout and swear) the house dog would just duck down and find somewhere out the way, but if it turned physical he would be in like a shot jumping and barking but never would nip or bite. But if we were just play fighting he'd just look straight at us and let out a soft woof and a bit of a growl. A grate dog ,Bit of a mediator .
