Has anyone here raised gamebred/working dogs indoors as house pets? How's it working out for you?

I've always been under the impression that chaining/kenneling a dog makes them a better worker, as they're higher in drive, more focused and willing to please when you bring them out for exercise or work. I'm not suggesting they're neglected out in the yard, but they're not spoiled so they're more willing to earn their keep.

What do you think about raising one of these dogs indoors?

ALOT of great dogs were house dogs. I can see where you coming from with what your saying but I personally don't agree with it. When your putting a dog through a keep or getting ready for a show or just working it or anything, i think you should always give the dog just about as much possible attention as you can. Take him/her with you everywhere in the car, let em' chill with ya in the house, walk walk walk with them. I think the better relationship you have with one another then the better he will or will want to perform for you. my 2 cents:D

IMO these dogs are willing to please indoors or outdoors but I think dogs kept on a chain are usually in better shape. In my experience you put a dog on a spot and his muscles just pop. From constantly hitting the chain and ability to walk/run/jog when it wants the dogs get a great workout. Indoors all he can really do is lay around until you take him out.

i have had two as house dogs including my current and they worked out great, little bit of work at the start but they come round pretty quick. but as Naustroms said they lose condition pretty quick once they start lazing around, and dont have the weight of the chain to lug all day.

Thanks CeasarIsis, I understand your point. I actually haven't tried raising an indoor working dog, so that was more of my speculations rather than a solid opinion. I'm considering trying an indoor dog, which is why I'm asking for opinions and experiences from you guys.

My occupation gives me a schedule where I only work 10 days a month. So whether they're house dogs or not, I'm still able to give the dogs lots of exercise :D

My dogs are inside and outside whatever I feel like doing for the day. When they are outside they are on the chain, inside they are in big outdoor type kennels inside but to keep them in shape I use weighter collars and/or harness. That and My dogs use the treadmill and spring pole all year round. Also, because they aren't out in the weather it keeps AC off my back.

Same here, one of mine is inside most of the time, one comes in at nights usually, and the others are outside either on a chain or in one of the kennels, i mix it up for them if i can.

i no this is something that i only read so i was wondering what others think. in colby's book he said house dogs tend to be smarter than kennel raised dogs. i also believe tudor said the same thing. just wondering what others think

I know most of mine people would consider house dogs even though they aren't inside all day and they can open kennel latches (I have to put backpack clips aka rock climbers clips in the padlock hole). They can also open doors and break out of smaller crates by opening the latch with their teeth. Now, I don't know if that has anything to do with being inside. I think bordum drove them to create ways out of whatever they are in.

my boy is a house dog and there aint nothing he wont do i tell him when he is working he still works the same when i take him out 4 walks and i think like whitrose said you grow a better bond with the dog so he listen to you more but thats just me

I would assume the house dog would have a closer bond but the outside dog to be in better shap.

I thinkg Ceaserisis first post was right on the money.

both of my dogs are inside/outside dogs...my wife stays at home with our baby....so they are outside for the most part runnin around never have or will be on a chain!!! I dont beleive in chaining a dog...they stay pretty tone and in shape without being on a chain, i was blessed with dogs with good "genetics"..still if not more willing to work when dady gets home...they sleep in their kennels and sometimes on the couch..i beleive you and your dog grow to have that much more of a "bond" when there allowed to be with you much as possible...i dont have alot of dogs or a big named kennel..so there is no need to keep them on a chain all day...but i can see where"fastlane" dogs and big named kennels with 10-30 dogs have to be "outside" dogs...jmo:d

i had a house dog that was a killer! its all about genetics and letting the dog be a dog.
once you teach them people manners leave them alone and they will continue to develop into what God intended them to be.
