raccoon range anywhere from 10lb and under to the big ones over 30lb.
do they pose a threat to an able dog??
damn straight they do..they are VERY tough fighters when they have no means of escape. they have paws like small hands and their teeth are large and very sharp. when they fight they hang onto the dog and bite like hell. they can really mess up and possibly kill a terrier, say you have a 20lb terrier against a 30lb coon the coon would have the advantage, especially when fighting on his own ground. a bulldog should have no trouble killing any coon in open ground, but i will say i've seen quite a few coon that were much more game than many of the so called bulldogs i've seen over the years.

  4. Go to the vet if you are worried and get a rabies titer done. A titer is measurement of how much antibodies to a given virus are present - if the levels are low you can revaccinate if you wish. If the dog still has a high amount of antibodies to the rabies virus there is no need to vaccinate again - remember overvaccinating can also be harmful.

The last fight my dogs got into with a skunk (3rd damn skunk they got!), left them with scratches and bite marks, so I had put them on ABs and cleaned them up and asked the vet that comes to my work the next day what he would of done for dogs after a fight with a skunk/coon/possum, he said as long as they are up to date on their rabies vacc, he would just clean them up and send them home with ABs. He told me that you need to know what animal(s) in your area are the known carriers of rabies, like here in my area skunks are not, but coons are.

So do you call them and turn your dog loose on them? That would be intense! But mine wouldn't stay quite long enough to let them come in. Been trying to catch a groundhog out in my Hayfield in a place I can't shoot to let one of mine do the deed but yet to catch him out.

My buddy has patterdales and they range from 9 to 12 pounds and ive seen them kill racoons. Dont get me wrong a racoon can fight almost as good as a dog but stands no chance against a pit. atleast against one of mine. i have tons of them here and they wander in my yard to try and steel food and i find them dead in the dog houses. It would be a good idea to get a booster. i get a booster from the vet plus i give my own for extra protection. so they get one twice a year for protection.

Just to clarify I was speaking on a coyote and a bulldog being intense not a racoon. Any bulldog worth its feed should make quick work of a racoon. Although I being a coonhunter have seen some pretty tough coons. We had a 15lb boar coon run down the tree one night on two hounds and it was all they wanted. I could only imagine what a 30lb coon could do to a dog of equal size seeing how some of these small ones tear the hounds up at times.

first of all it wasnt directed towards u. i guess im a lier and im just making thing up. i can tell u this we have alot of racoons and they r tuff as nails but my buddies Patterdales kill racoons its not easy at all but its happened many of times, so maybe the dogs you have seen are poor quality. I have a 23 pound female pit that destroys them some pats and pits have to much mouth for a coon and they are gamer.

Easy there dynomite. No one called you a liar. I'm talking coonhounds. Never did I say a patterdale couldn't kill a coon!! I'm sure your 23lber destroys the coons she grabs. What's the avg size coon in your area? As for poor quality dogs? I wouldn't bash a man without knowing him or his hounds be it coonhounds or bulldogs. If it don't hunt I don't feed it. And I was only clarifying my post because it said nothing about coyotes and could have been misinterpreted. No wonder ya go by dynomite ya got a short fuse! :D

Wasnt talking down on ur hounds ! i was just stating in general maybe the dogs u saw were not that good. I was mistanken than. i thought from ur post u said a coon the same size could put a real hurting. i have seen little patterdales 10 pounds take on a coon around 20 pounds and go toe to toe for 25 min. the coon did do alot of damage but got put away in the end. Those coons are smart as hell and fight like Ali. Sorry if i took ur post the wrong way. The biggest 1 ive seen has been around 30, They usually average 20lbs.

No harm no foul. I'd love to hunt in an area that coons avg 20lbs. Ours avg 12 and the biggest I've seen around here was 18. I've never seen a patterdale at work none in my area that I'm aware of. Only a few jagds terriers. In fact the first pats I ever seen was the old man on the mtns.

Haven't had any run ins with coons around the house but my Bitch is a Opossum hunter. I normally pick her up onces I start seeing the animals insides, however I have seen them suckers wander off even after their skulls are crushed and guts are out.

Coons are tough as hell, especially dangerous around water or when backed into a corner. These animals are fighting to survive while our dogs are out for the sport. Gameness comes into play when your limits are pushed. My male gets torn up until he runs out of patients or quits having fun i'm not certain.

  15. Was at my friends house one evening to help out with his horses while his wife was recovering from surgery. His Pit/Great Dane mix, Delila, scared up a huge coon from under the barn while we were working and it was on, and over, in a minute. Delila is one huge ass, all muscle, all attitude dog that must weigh well over 100 lbs and she finished off that coon almost instantly. Coon never had a chance.

    i have a story.
my friends 40 pound female saw a possum on a 6ft fence ran up to the fence cleard it slamed into the possum so i jumped the fence to get her and she grebed the possum and i could heir her crunching it's bones so i sayed drop it and she did i picked her up and handed her over the fence to my friend.

i miss that dog hope i get to see her agen:(

  18. Also had a neighbor with a Beagle that would drag home a dead coon about twice a year. She'd get beat up but always won and then would drag the coon home as proud as could be. Tough little bugger.

I used to have an English Bulldog that would scrap with Possums and Armadillos if you can believe that. He had no problem with the Possums but the Dillos were like trying to scrap with a turtle. Funny to watch. He was the only EB we've ever had that would actually attack a critter. He couldn't catch anything but figured out he could trap them in the fence corner where they couldn't get away.
