A question about "Being Game"

    A question about "Being Game"

As this is an APBT forum, it is more of a Game-dog forum (as the name). I often see threads about people asking if their dog is game or a curr. Now to my questions...

    - I understand that game is usually a dog that is driven, determined, courageous, etc. When some one says they are going to "test" their dog to see if it is game, what do they mean? Are they basically saying they will let their dog fight and see how it does? (that is what I am getting, but please tell me if I am wrong)

If so, I don't understand this. I thought most of the responsible APBT owners want the breed to stay away from fighting to combat the stereotypical "pit bull" rap.

    or

Do they mean just see how it reacts if another dog gets aggressive with it and immediately break it up?

I think they mean they want to have only game dogs, only breed the best of the best based on game.

Just because a dog will fight, doesnt make it game. And just because it is dog aggerssive, doesnt make it game. EDIT

Yeah, I know that just because it will fight doesnt make it game. A dog that is game is one that will KEEP fighting despite any pain it is enduring, but when people want only game dogs, why do they have them and why do they only want dogs that are game? Do they fight them?

PS: As ignorant as my questions may come off, I am in no way trying to bad-mouth anyone who owns gamedogs or anything, I really am just curious as to how you find out if your dog is game or not.

BTW PIt4life... I love the chocolate looking dog on the bottom of your sig picture, is it one of your dogs?

    Anyone?

Basically, how do you tell if your dog actually is a game dog?

You cannot tell if your dog is game unless you game test him. It is illegal to game test your dog in all 50 states. Most people on this site say they want game-bred dogs not game dogs.

A search would do you well. This is brought up every few months, normally more frequently than that.

If someone says they have gamedogs its one of three things:

    1.) They are lieing

    2.) They break the law

    or the most common one

3.) They have an erroneous defintion of gameness. (i.e. saying a weightpull dog is game, or their hog-hunting dog is game, etc)

As far as we know, no one here fights their dogs. Its against the law, and the site does not condone or support any illegal activity. We will not tolerate an educational (historical) site such as this to be brought down because someone is a member and rolls their dogs. Its in the best intrest of everybody to just forget about it, and get along as "pitbull owners".

Totally agree. I wish people would just leave our breed alone.

Cop or not doesn't matter. If you really want to learn about the breed. Pick up a book. Richard F. Stratton has some good books for beginners like us.

Re: A question about "Being Game"

LoL No I am not an informant or cop:cool: . I really was just curious about what people mean when they say they have a game dog, because as far as I'm concerned, I think it's wrong to fight dogs. And from what I know, most responsible APBT owners are completely AGAINST the dog-fighting problem, so I wanted to know HOW they "game test" their dogs.

Once again I am not a cop. I joined this forum because I just got a female chocolate rednose about 1 1/2 months ago and was looking to better my understanding of the breed, not really to be accused of being a "cop trying to get information"

    Thanks to the helpful replies.

PS: I OWN an APBT look in my gallery, her name's Mia. I'm not trying to get anyone in trouble or anything, just looking for information.

Ouch. Simms with the right hook. lol

I think you're best to follow what 14Rock said.

I really don't think that anyone is going to flap their gums on a public site about rolling their dogs. Unless they are stump dumb or FOS. As there are enough rats in the box to really mess up someones life.

Isn't one purpose of this site to educate? Yes, we encourage researching before you get this breed. However, sometimes people do not do that. So, should we not be trying to educate these people so that they may be responsible owners? IMO, that was a very mean thing to say.
c10d, I also suggest doing a search like 14rock said. When ever you have a question you can always try the search feature first. Most topics have been discussed many many times and you should be able to find the answer you're looking for.
Here are atleast two threads that might help you.

Re: A question about "Being Game"

People want "game-bred" dogs (much different than being game) because these dogs are usually true to the standard, unlike these big overgrown dogs everyone is breeding now. Most APBT fanciers appreciate the history of our dogs, however, we leave it just that: HISTORY. There is no place in our society for the history to be brought to present day, but we can still keep a piece of the historical game dogs of yester-year.

Re: A question about "Being Game"

The traits all of us so love about these dogs :

Fearlessness, Courage, Loyalty and an undieing drive to please their owner. Health better than the "norm" in most cases. Energetic, goof balls. Having a ROCK SOLID tempermant, no matter what. Anything that makes this breed stand out from others-is because of their past. Everything our dogs are today, comes from hundreds of years of solid, game, bulldogs.

We are already witnessing what happens when people stray from that, in the health of their dogs. If your not breeding for gameness, your not breeding APBT's. In a few generations, they will be labs, huskies, poodles and shitzuhs with a short coat and muscular look. No thanks, I am devoted to this breed not because of what it looks like, but what lies within the canine.

Not too mention that gamebred animals have a whole list of activities they can do, and many times do better than the breeds specifically bred for it. Confromation shows, weightpull, hog-hunting, Schutzland, flyball, search and rescue, etc etc. These are all sports that require a healthy, athletic, well-rounded dog with the drive to stick it out to win at all costs.

agree 100%.......and they are a good looking animal to boot, and they haven't even been bred for looks, which is pretty amazing. All these other breeds that have purposely been bred to look good for generation upon generation, and IMO APBT's by far look much better than they do.....

I will have to say I think we should be more like the greyhound people. You have to prove to them you are dog worthy. I will probley get kicked out for this but I see way to many people with game dogs that dont have a clue. But every one wants game bred dogs on paper and forget the dogs make the paper. And I also understand that you have to learn some how , You should learn by going to yards and helping out when you can and you will be shocked how many REAL dog men and women will give you dogs. BUT NO every body is selling pups and hanging papers and shit like that. So it turns out like this. MY dogs I feed now are the same blood I was givin 20 years ago by a man I would go talk with and help feed and rake chain spaces I have bought dogs my self but the best Ive seen are the ones people put there hart in.. Game dogs make game bred dogs and thats it......... YIS J
