I view them as property, kinda like livestock. I care about my dogs, just that if times are tight I am selling one or two.
When I hear "Guardian" or "Protector" I think of Animal Rights and all that crap and it makes me squirm.....lol.

    I'm with the property too

Don't get me wrong...I love my pets...but in the end they are not my equal and are property.

I put other. Why? I consider my dog my PROPERTY. BUT, with a modified status. I could, if I wished in good conscious chop up my table that I'm sitting at. But I could not do that with my dog. The fact that he is a living breathing feeling being modifies his status somewhat. The question is, how and how much. We all know (or we should) why some are so anxious to get pets and animals in general reclassified as "wards". There is legal precedent for a somewhat modified status.

Good subject and all important to pet owners (and I do consider myself my pets owner, not his guardian.)

  6. YA, I was also thinking that if they were labeled as "our property" here in the Carolinas (God how I hate them) we would have to pay taxes...I am not kidding on this folks. You would have to pay taxes on these dogs yearly because they are claimed as property. I do not see the logic in that at all.
Now there are other states that would not do that, and I could name a few, but i won't...:D. Here if you have anything that is considered a "luxury" then you have to pay taxes....cars, bikes, homes, land, boats, sports cars, trailors, 4-wheelers and the like....you pay taxes on all of that, the states are so poor, that it is considered "LUXERY" for heaven's sake get real!
I will fight if we ever have to pay taxes on our dogs, because they are considered our property...which is a luxury.
I guess all in all they each have their goods and bads......like everything in this world....damned if you do damned if you don't!

well i am my dog's owner.i purchased them or bred litters and kept pups.i am not the dogs parent because that just goes against my belifes beastialty wrong in my book.i don't have a tail or walk on all fours barking i am a little fuzzy at times but not covered in fur so there for i am not my dogs equal i am a human being.and as far as other don't quite know what that would be.so owner sounds right to me since i have ownership papers and they are registered to me with the city and such just as you would a car or home or any other property.

I am the owner of my dogs. I am opposed to the term "guardian" because the legal issues attached to it.

funny you say that because legally you are responsible for them

Old Timer: You're a respected man but that post you made was just foolish. It's not about beastiality or any inhumane act. It's about ultimately being responsible for your dogs. You take care of them so technically you are their "Legal guardian"(to protect and watch over them) whether you like it or not. That goes for all of you.

To the rest of you I ask this question: If someone adopts kids or has a child that has kids and they end up raising them then would you call that ownership? Since when do living beings own other living beings? I'm not trying to be all "we are the world" here but no-one has a legitimate reason as to why they ultimately consider it ownership.

    dog = property

I also put other. I agree that I own them but I am responsible for feeding and housing them. As well as medical. I am also legally responsible for thier actions.

How can you compare a animal to a human. I love my dogs and provide for them if they earn their keep. I am very devoted to these dogs, but I could never see them as a child or an equal. If I had to choose between my family's life and my dogs I would choose my family. I would always choose to save a humans life over an animals. My dog is my property just like any other animal that I own would be. I just don't understand how people can compare a human being a to any other kind of animal.

I put property...Because while yes, my boyfriend and I joke around and say they are our "children". They are still just dogs. Like someone else said, I am more protective and more caring about my dogs than most of my other posessions*sp*, but if anything happened, (i.e. one of them bit a child, got cancer, stuff like that), then I would put them to sleep, whereas an equal I would probably do everything possible to help them get better.

My dogs are my property and my companions, and if I would have to loose one of the two, it would be my property.

if I was the parent/guardian, then one day the animal would grow up and have to go out into the world on its own

if it was my equal, then the dog needs to cook for me every once in a while, and rub my back, and bath itself, and... get my point?

If it was "other", well, I dont even want to start thinking that way.

So the only logical conclusion is...property. I bought the dog, I feed the dog, I make all the decisions for the dog, for life, I am responsible for the dog, it is my property. Whether feelings are attached or not is irrelevant. Some folks have emotions attached to motorcycles, cars, boats, guns, tv's, etc. Emotions are irrelevant, and if the law was changed to me being the guardian, that is just a foothold into the government making more laws and telling me how to deal with my property! The devil is a liar! Even the bible says we have dominion over everything on the earth. I have dominion over my dogs/animals/livestock/property!

My wife used to have a pet bull. and many folks are attached to chickens. So...
Also, people talk to and nurture plants, some stroke their cars and have emotions attached to them, yet all the above is property. Just because something is property doesnt mean that emotions are not attached. Most property hass emotions attached to it. You wouldnt buy most of the things you have unless you liked them. Next time you go to a resturant, are you going to get something that you do not like? I tell you what, I love to have a nice ribeye, and have been loving all this crawfish.

So be it, I feed, take care and give my dogs a good life. THAT'S WHAT I DO FOR MY CHILDREN. ARE THEY PROPERTY?

    I like your post Baker!

The comparing an animal to a child is treehugging philosophy, plain and simple. And if a person loves their dog equally with their child, they need their children taken from them! As a matter of fact, a person who treats a dog like a human is bound to have troubles with the animal.

They are PROPERTY!Deal with it, die from it, or get over it!!(yes, this means you!)
