I read recently that they have a new test that will identify your dogs heritage. My question is, they said that they had gene markers for SBT's, Amstaffs, and APBT's, are they one and the same markers for all three breeds? Some of the strains that have been kept pure, really there might not be any left, but if there is, would they be different? I have read that in Ireland, the family's that bred fighting dogs, guarded their peds, and went as far as to say other strains weren't pure. Mouser

A DNA test will identify a dog's heritage, provided you have DNA from it's parents. Other than that, no way.

I occasionally visit another board where several people have done this "name that breed" blood test. Almost all of them knew their mixed dogs breed background. The interesting part? The tests were wrong. One girl had a Husky/GSD mix & knew both the parent dogs yet her dog came back as Lab/Poodle. How's that for accuracy?

And some of those tests require a picture be sent in of the dog as well. Hmmm...so maybe they can make their own guess & charge you a couple hundred bucks for throwing away the cotton swabs?

I spoke to MMI Genomics (the ppl doing the breed tests) a while back & they said they do not have any genetic profiles on the pit bull breeds & nor do they plan to have any done due to legal reasons.

The only thing a dna test can tell you is whether or not the sire and dam are the actual ones providing that all 3 dogs (offspring, sire, dam) are present for dna testing. It can not identify a breed of dogs.
