i have one of my dogs on heartguard, and the vet told me that it keeps em from getting worms, well today he made a stool, and there was little short worms, kinda flat, about maybe a quarter or so inch olong. what kind of worms is it, what do i need to give him??

If they look like rice, it is tape worms. Heart guard doesnt protect against tapes.

Heartguard does hook worms. If they were hooks, they would have a little hook at the end of them.

  5. From my understanding Hearguard takes care of all all worms EXCEPT Tape worms.....

Tape worms come from flea infestation.....your dog either has a bad case of the lfeas, or is able to eat dead animals such a rabbits that carry flea larve....you need to get this taken care of.

When you give the tape worm pill, make sure you follow direstions to the T!

And fix the flea problem, or it will never stop!

he has the flea meds too, but we go in the woods down to the creek everyonce in a while, so it is possible he could've gotten ahold of something dead.
could he have gotten em from hogs?? i've put him on a couple hogs in the past 2 months or so, hes a 6 month old dog, i've put him in a couple hog pens to get pigs for me that we were too slow to catch.

    i thought tapeworms were long

tapeworms look like rice. if they are long, they have been there a while, but you will still see where they could break up into rice segments. Long spagetti looking worms is round worms. There is a book you should get. It is "home vetrenarian" or something like that. Info at your fingertips! I am no vet, but I went to revival animal and got fish tapes and used it just as normal prazaquentel is dosed. If you do not have a flea infestation in your yard/home, then go ahead and worm the dog. everyday the dog is having vital nourishment taken from it. Many times you will see, in a bad infestation of tapeworms, the rice segments around the dogs arse. Stick your finger up the dogs arse and ream the rim and see what comes out. If worms come out, you got it bad. If peanut butter comes out, go and get you some jelly and bread and eat lunch!

(the last part was a joke in case you didnt know!LOL)

  8. Naw....I could be wrong, but I have never heard of dogs getting tape worms, which come from fleas from hogs....
it is usually like rabbits and such..I will find you alink of info on tape worms...the flea preventative may not be working that well either....when the dog HAS fleas, tape worms come from them eating the fleas off of them....
let me find you a link on it

  9. How did my dog get tapeworms?

In order for a dog to become infected with the common tapeworm, Dipylidium, the dog must swallow a flea that contains tapeworm eggs.

This process begins when tapeworm eggs are swallowed by flea larvae (an immature stage of the flea). Contact between flea larvae and tapeworm eggs is thought to occur most frequently in contaminated bedding or carpet.

Next, the dog chews or licks its skin as a flea bites; the flea is then swallowed. As the flea is digested within the dog's intestine, the tapeworm hatches and anchors itself to the intestinal lining.

A dog become infected with Echinococcus when it eats a small mammal, usually a rodent, that contains the worm. Foxes and coyotes (and the wild rodents upon which they prey) are important in the life cycle of this parasite. Dogs and cats may also become infected if they eat rodents carrying the parasite.

What kind of problems do tapeworms cause for the dog?

Tapeworms are not highly pathogenic (harmful) to your dog. They may cause debilitation and weight loss when they occur in large numbers. Sometimes, the dog will scoot or drag its anus across the ground or carpet because the segments are irritating to the skin in this area. The adult worm is generally not seen, but the white segments which break away from the tapeworm and pass outside the body rarely fail to get an owner's attention!

Occasionally, a tapeworm will release its attachment in the intestines and move into the stomach. This irritates the stomach, causing the dog to vomit the worm. When this happens, a worm several inches in length will be seen

    How are the tapeworms treated?

Treatment is simple and, fortunately, very effective. A drug which kills tapeworms is given, either orally or by injection. It causes the tapeworm to dissolve within the intestines. Since the worm is usually digested before it passes, it is not visible in your dog's stool. These drugs should not cause vomiting, diarrhea, or any other adverse side-effects.

Control of fleas is very important in the management and prevention of tapeworm infection. Flea control involves treatment of your dog, the indoor environment and the outdoor environment where the dog resides.

If the dog lives in a flea-infested environment, reinfection with tapeworms may occur in as little as two weeks. Because the medication which treats tapeworm infection is so effective, return of the tapeworms is almost always due to reinfection from the environment.

there really ain't no prevention for worms.now heartguard states that it prevents from them common worms but i always take that product at face value and by that i mean i only trust it to prevent heartworms.only sure fire way to keep your dogs worm free is to run a dose of wormer through them regularly.

What i would suggest since none of us are there to see them ourselfs and if your not for positive what kind they are,is take a stool sample to the vet find out what they are and worm acordingly.but always even though heartguard states it prevents them common worms run a dose of wormer through your dogs it never hurts em none.

Heartgard has pyrantel (Strongid, Nemex) in it. That protects against Rounds and Hooks. Interceptor does rounds, hooks, and whips.

You will not be able to see hooks in the stool. The 2 you will see are Rounds (spaghetti) Tapes (rice). And as said in previous post tapes are caused by a dog swallowing a flea. Fleas are hosts for tapes.

Also heartgard guaranties their product and if your dog comes down with rounds or hooks they will pay for dewormer. Ask your Vet.

I use zimectrin gold (ivermectin/prazaquental) least once a quarter and Safeguard the 1st of every month. If you use the zimectrin gold, don't use the heart wormer that month.

Tapeworms are long (if I remember correctly the longest recorded was in a human was 46 feet in length!). However, what you are seeing are just tiny segments that are breaking off and being expelled in the stool.

Droncit is the drug I use for tapeworms. It is an otc drug (over the counter), but many times it's only found at a veterinary pharmacy. As someone said, follow the instructions and make sure you get the appropriate dose for your dog's weight. (Droncit is usally a 2-dose treatment)

As for tapeworms, in canines infected fleas are the most common cause of infection. Even if your dog is on Advantage/Advantix or Frontline/Frontline Plus, all it takes is for your dog to ingest one infected flea. If you are having a problem with fleas, apply the product (the ones mentioned are the most affective to date) every 3 weeks. If you want to bathe the dog, do so first and wait a full 24 hours before applying the product. Make sure you apply the whole tube between the shoulder blades and directly on the skin (you must part the hair to get to the skin). If your dog is in the water often or bathed often, you need to be using Frontline/Frontline Plus as it is more waterproof than the Advantage products which are washed off pretty easily unless you use a specific shampoo made to go hand-in-hand with the product. Also, since this dog is in the woods, you need to be using a product that takes care of ticks as well.
