Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by screamin'eagle, Jan 14, 2008.

  1. In regards to dogs...

What is the best advice you've ever been given?

  2. ALWAYS carry a breaking stick & know how to use it!!!!!

Also met a few dogs that required 2 breaking sticks to stop their lil asses.

Believe it or not, the most sensible thing I heard said was not even said to me, but something that Steve Irwin said that I thought adapted itself to living with these dogs very well: "Don't get complacent." In other words, don't get so full of yourself and your accomplishments that you start making stupid mistakes. Stay humble, and pay attention.

Of course, that's more applicable to someone who's been messing with these dogs for a long time. The best advice for a newbie, IMO, is that you'll get out of these dogs what you put into them. If you're involved and hands-on, you're going to be much happier with the results than if you let things play out by themselves.

Don't EVER trust two dogs alone together, regardless of thier age or temperment.

"First of all, you have to practice honesty. Keep your temper. Never loose control of your ego. And above all, be patient. If you learn to do these things with yourself and with the dog, you've started in the right direction."

Even the rankest cur, is gamer than the gamest man. Respect them all, they took more than you did.

Never trust two pitbulls not to fight.

One of the best I've ever been told was in reference to a dogmans wife asking "Why are you always in the garage, messing with those dogs, cleaning their kennels, and feeding them before you sit down to eat with us?". He told me "Son, them dogs can't get off the couch and walk into the bathroom, or get in the fridge whenever they are hungry. I love my family to death, but my animals don't have the luxuries my family does. By owning them I've made it my responsibility to make sure they are clean, dry, comfortable, and fed.... and the helpless come before those who have every tool to make those things on their own."

A little more in depth than the motto many of us who grew up with pets, heard nearly every day from our parents. "Make sure the dogs have food and water, before you eat or drink."

And one in reference to when we were just starting with this breed, anxious, and reading too much into nothing. I find myself repeating this more and more, the longer I'm involved with these dogs. "Let them be puppies, you'll never get the chance again." Or a shorter version "They're just pups." And when they are growing old and gray, treat them like puppies until the day they die.

Never point you're finger and say "That dogs a cur, and I'm going to stop it. Because that will be the one leaving you in tears, crawling across the pit."

I tried to stay away from quotes specific to sporting dogs, but some I cannot help. These are quotes from the men who most completely understand these dogs, and offered the best advice when I needed it. Dogmen. Regardless of your stance on the subject of testing dogs, these men (and women) are the best mentors this breed has. It is the truest form of this breed, these men have dealt with for 20-30-60+ years. Chances are, they learned something from the experience.
