Can you guys help me with some good plans for berral dog houses or show me pics. I know people that use pallets to put the berral on top or they use 2 2x4 so it would be leveled off the ground and shade what do you guys use I've seen plain plywood they lay on the saide of the berral and also I've seen people use pallets they stand them up one on each saide of the berral and the lay one across the put plywood on top I just wanted some opinions.

Use a 6' sheet of metal for the cover and be sure to round off the four corners.

Use 2x4s or 4x4s for the base that the barrel is screwed to, 36" will be long enough.

Then cut 4, 2x4s that will be the "ups" that are screwed to the base boards you used...and they will need to be right at or just above the top of the barrel. **puttin a couple of screws through the barrel into the "ups" is also something good to do for "extra support".

Then cut 2, 2x4s 5' long and screw them on top of the "ups" for the metal to be screwed down to. Before screwing down the metal, it'd be good to put a 2x4 from front to back of the barrel that is screwed to the boards that the metal will be screwed to.....it gives it more support, especially if you have dogs that get on their house/barrels.

Buy an extra barrel and cut 6 opening covers out of it as well, it helps to keep their barrels dry on the inside.

We make a little structure to hold it up, secure the barrel to the structure with screws, and put a little awning over the entrance. I'll get some picture for you tomorrow.

OH your asking about "Barrel" doghouses. For a minute I was thinking that word was some new manufacturer name or someones last name or something. Well its pretty easy to make one. Cut a hole barely big enough for the dog to go in on the lid end....and a pallet will help keep it off the cold ground and keep crap/snow from getting dragged in it. Other than that your basically done just pack hay in it in the winter and vent it in the summer. Secure it to the pallet with a 2x4 cage or protected roofing nails from the inside.

Be careful with the barrel doghouses. They are on the national criteria list of indicators of dogfighting. Having barrel doghouses can now be enough to have you investigated and your yard inspected.

I know, I know...the world has gone crazy:(.

Yeah I know what you mean that happened to a dog men I know he has like 30 + dogs on his yard and animal control came out to check him out he shows only like 5 of his dogs so he showed them the ribons and trophies the dog had won they told him that he checked out fine but that he had to get a kennel licence once in a blue moon they would come and check his yard without telling him or they will peep over the fence to check his yard out yeah they will do anything to get you cought up in something. :(

See the funny thing is I say hay.... but what I use is actually called Golden tube straw..... which is the big stuff pumpkins sit on in bales at Halloween......its about 1/4 inch tubes....not the eatin hay. But I have and do know some who use eatin hay when its old and dry and aint gonna go anywhere else than the burn area.

I built a dog house out of 1/2' plywood, and 2x4's for the frame that I inserted a 35gal barrel into..It had a roof that fit like the lid on a shoe box so I could remove and clean the barrel as I needed..Packed with straw it was a very durable house that kept my dog comfortable thruout the frigid winters that we expirience in the NE..

    * I just noticed that you are in Az so my post wasnt relevent..If I lived in Az I would use a 55gal barrel with a 1/4' box built around it so it doesnt look like a barrel, because as previously mentioned barrel houses are associated with dogfighters in the minds of most AC minds..

if hes gonna put it in a wood box why not just minus the barrel in the first place and make good wood houses minus the weight of a barrel....I would just say screw wood houses and the work of building when you can just cut a plastic barrel mount it and dash....they last for a while and are 5 bucks...and insulated which is good even in summer in AZ...the blue ones really block the sun too...SO Screw AC ....use barrels proudly and if you aint got a beat up bloody dog in your yard you aint got no worries about it.

The barrels are much easier to clean, than a wooden dog house ;)

Pick em up, dump em out, spray em with a hose and some disinfectant when need be. Non-porous, nothing is left behind.

Insulated wooden houses in the winter, barrels in the summer. I drill vent holes on the lowest part of mine, to allow any moisture out. Also, find it helpful to bore some port holes in it up high, both sides so it circulates through. Since I have plywood tilted and attached over, air can circulate, but water cannot get in (for the most part).

Laid the barrel on a peice of plywood, attached 2x4's on the plywood, to hold the house. Screwed the house FROM THE INSIDE! to the 2x4's so it can't tip over. I doubt I need to explain why you run the screws from the inside.

Have had and still have a few dogs allergic to straw, and alfalfa hay. Cedar chips are my bedding of choice.

I try not to use wood houses because of the spiders spinning webs in the corners. I've had a couple dogs bitten. I use blue barrels with 4 or 5 inch pvc screwed to the bottom to keep it off the ground. Theres no wear and tear from the weather using plastics and they're light as hell. I use wood chips most of the time. Some of our dogs were allergic to cedar so we had to use straw. Heres a couple pics of DJ when he was around 6 months old on my old yard. You can see my barrel set ups here. This was under trees in the shade BTW. There plenty of sunny spots that they bathed in too. I only had 4 on my yard at this time..

if you get a brand new barrel on-line (which I wouldn't suggest) it's around $50.00...If you get a used barrel, I have seen then in the Iwanna for about $5 a piece. We got ours for free though, because my boyfriend works at a grading company, and they were just about done with them and let us have them. So, you could check something like that.

The barrel ensures that your house is waterproof..I usually build my doghouses out of 2x4's,3/4' ply wood, and expanding waterproof foam, but even a well built dog house will eventually leak..With a barrel inserted your dog WILL stay dry..
