Seeking understanding about Breeding..

Perhaps all you veterans will think this to be a stupid question, however I joined this forum to become informed about the breed that I now own. I have 3 APBT's 1) Assosimo who is Razorsedge Male 2) Akira who is a (PR) Razorsedge/ Gottyline Female 3) Storm who is a (PR) Razorsedge / York Male. I have been approached recently by people saying that with my pedigrees on Akira and Storm I should breed them. Now first of all before you all jump down my throat I understand the responsibility that is involved in breeding so this is not something I take likely and even if I decide to it won't be anytime soon. But I don't think I could breed them anyway because the have the same father and different mothers. But on to my question wouldn't that be considered in-breeding if I were to breed them together? And could someone explain to me the rules on breeding as it applies to responsible breeding genetics wise? This may be a repetitive but I didn't see it anywhere on the site.

Ok I wont jump down your throat. I wouldn't breed the two because they aren't pitbulls. RE is a mix of several dogs..

  3. First and foremost you should ask yourself WHY breed these dogs. What would be the reason behind breeding these dogs? There needs to be a good reason, not just because someone suggested it or the papers look good.

If you bred those two together, it would likely be considered some type of linebreeding. But I think on this site, folks are going to ask you why you would want to breed those dogs anyway. Dogs should prove their quality first and foremost, before any thought of using their reproductive organs comes into play. And it is generally accepted on this site that most Razors Edge and/or Gotti dogs are not representative of quality APBTs. A lot of newcomers are impressed by head size, the blue color, and other exaggerated physical traits, but those who have been a long time in the breed will usually tell you that a good working dog, bred close to the standard, is far more impressive.

If you check out this link, there are some articles about inbreeding, linebreeding, etc. http://www.apbt.info/tiki-index.php

Believe me, folks wanting puppies is never a good reason to breed. Everybody is an expert on breeding when they feel they stand to gain something from it. Most don't understand a sensible breeding program, and feel that they can pick a good breeding just by looking at a dog. Don't let people like that pressure you too hard. If you were ready to breed, you would know. My recommendation would be to spay/neuter what you have, and take away the temptation to make any decisions you're not comfortable with.

    Oh, and welcome! :)

I would not reccommend breeding them for the fact that they are RE dogs. These are unhealthy displastic animals. But they can still be great pets. There is a lot of science to breeding and inbreeding can be a good thing. The thing about inbreeding is it has the capability to bring out alot of bad traits. You have to have dogs that are exceptionally well built mentally and physically and then you have to cull the litter hard. Also just a pretty pedigree doesnt make a dog worthy of being bred. What has your dog done to be worthy of reproducing is a question you need to ask yourself. Then you need to pick a stud to complement your female according to what you want to breed for or visa versa. Breeding responsibly is alot of effort and you might want to do alot of research before you jump into breeding dogs.

First things first, you got the cart ahead of the horse. With all the questions you have on breeding is a good indication that you are not even close to being ready to breed dogs.

    With that said

The two dogs with the same father are half brother and sister, that if both dogs proved to be worthy it could be a formula that has proven to work for other breeders. And yes that is inbreeding. The trick to that is to know what your looking for and then following that up with removing the less desirables.

There is so much more that goes into breeding dogs, its more than watching two dogs hump.

In all reality one should be preserving some form of quality to said dogs, anything less than that is not wanted nor should it be practiced by the novice.

    Baha / Yahoo ,

Those are the kind of responses i am looking for (food for thought). I may not know alot about APBT's yet but again that's why I am here. I would never just breed for the sake of money or pedigree. I have simply been asked about it and want to be more informed. Like I said if I were to breed it wouldn't be anytime soon.

  8. Am I going to have to be the one to say it?

OP,Those are NOT pit bulls. Those are bullies.

Yes, they are bullies, but it sounds like they are also loved pets. Theres too many reasons not to breed, let them be your cherished, altered, housedogs.

Now that right there is a good answer. You should only breed if you are going to improve on what you start with.Love them for what they are and have fun but breed?????
