been feeding canidae for some time and glad Marty posted the changes. My ? is whats a better alternative for the same price and has anyone heard anything bad or good about black gold? They advertise it in the ADBA gazette.

Your best bet would be the Kirkland Signature Chicken, Rice & Vegetable Formula. It is also a good deal price-wise as well ($20.99 for 40 lbs.) You can find it at your local Costco:)

Black Gold ranks a 1-star (which is the lowest available) on the dog food analysis website. Basically down there with Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, etc. I wouldn't feed it.

As far as a better alternative for the same price, that's the million dollar question. I do a lot of browsing on the website I linked to get a rough idea of where foods rank, quality-wise. Prices will vary depending on your area, your retailers, etc. For example, in my area, there is no 5-star food available that is as cheap as Canidae. The like-quality foods -- Nature's Variety, Wellness, Innova, etc -- are all more expensive. The like-priced or cheaper foods are all lower-quality. Tack on to that my preference to not feed anything manufactured by Diamond, and I'm having a hell of a time finding a suitable food.

Right now, I'm trying to see if our retailer carries the Nature's Variety kennel packs. I don't want to downgrade my dogs' food, and that's a good one.

i feel ur pain man, im also down to my last 40lb bag, i think im going to bite the bullet and switch the 2 dogs over to Innova Adult dry food, the ingredients are great, matter of fact probably better than the original Canidae, but the price is a little higher like $45 a bag

well i went to the local feed store last night and was comparing prices and ingredients and it looks like this stuff is equal price as Canidae, about 38 bucks, and has a great list of ingredients. Yea the Innova has a little better ingredients list but its almost 10 bucks more, so i'll be switching my dogs over to Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul within the next month

I've seen people use the Chicken Soup without any problems. I think Diamond has better guidelines for quality since the recall they had. I say give it a chance before you switch.

I'm just concerned because of the amount of crap i've heard about Diamond, thats one of the reason's im switching away from Canidae because apparently they are made by Diamond now. Damnit now im stuck between a rock and a hard place, it would be pointless to switch to Chicken Soup because both it and Canidae are very similar in ingredients and cost, i might as well stay with Canidae, but after what 14rock posted about his dog i'm afraid to put my dogs on the new formula. I know Innova is a superior feed to both of them, plus im only feeding 2 dogs so maybe i should just go for it, i don't know my mind is about to explode

I know what you mean. If you are going to feel better about feeding them the Innova, then go for it!

I've been feeding Canidae, but since I heard it's are made by Diamond, I decided to try the "Taste of the Wild" food that Diamond makes. It's a grain-free food for around the same price. And I dont see any harm in trying since it's made by the same company. No problems so far.

A good thing to know would be: How long has Diamond been making Canidae? If they made the old formula too then it shouldn't be a big deal unless YOUR dog has a problem.

yea that would be useful info. as far as i know they were and independent company because demand for the feed was low but now that everyone has realized that most feeds are garbage they had to increase productivity and basically outsource to Diamond, atleast thats what i've heard so far. I've considered trying the new formula but i think at this point im gonna say the hell with it and move on

Yeah I feel you. If "Taste of the wild" doesn't work out for me I'll probably look around for another grain-free formula. I think grain-free is probably the best way to go.
