Standing the line on a courtesy

I agree with the mentors why do it for free? But more importantly why do it at all? The dog has won has nothing left to prove! And why risk the embarassment to yourself and your dog once you are already victorious? But in reality the dog should go regardless until the last breath to be considered game! Imho!

  2. Eh, just to add to this courtesy scratch thingy......the courtesy does not need to be completed.....the dog can be picked up inches away from contact and still satisfy the "want" to check if it would still scratch....

Remember that the rules on paper can be modified to fit your wants....no scratch to win? fine....10, 20, 30, etc in corners? fine.....cross line to complete scratch or take hold? allow a full count to complete or Loose if dog hesitates and/or starts greeting the fanciers around the box?

It is always best to talk in detail before assuming your way into a misunderstanding.

ADD ON: Why do it if already won? Because the other side or on-lookers could later say that the winning dog was looking around, about to stop, etc. A courtesy scratch shows that your dog was still willing to continue at the end of the event. In fact, sometime refusing to courtesy scratch your winning dog may give birth to rumors of almost quitting, etc. Best to show that in the end, your W dog was all go....again, the dogs do not need make contact.....either one can pick up right before making hold. Even if they did take hold, a few more seconds in the mix will not make a heck of a lot of difference......think about it.

Maybe there is a lot of pride to lose if the winner doesn't courtesy scratch, but isn't there something important to gain knowing that the winner would have gone across? Wouldn't you want to know if your dog would have quit(potentially) if it had been his/her turn to go? If you were trying to determine how game the dog is(and shouldn't that be the whole point to begin with - not to look good or bad or impress anyone?) As Rocky said, you don't have to let the dog complete the courtesy - if the other dog is done it is cruel to let the other dog hammer him in the corner one more time. Let him go halfway across - you just want to see if the intent is there.

I guess this is how the Hood Rats do it these days
If there was a clear "reason" displayed to justify question by the dog, then yes by all means GAS ON IT! and pick'em up short.

    Courtesy scratching on "speculation/assumption/pride" was
not the way we saw things 20 years ago.

"Rumors"? let the women cackle :p

Your reply is still flawed, and my reply to YOU sir was about Scratching To WIN and that Sir is a moronic thing to do and NOT intelligent as you stated... "Most intelligent people Scratch to Win" I disagree and told you why. You do things as you want to, I just voiced my Opinion on that subject matter.

Rocky answer my question as to Why ask for a courtesy scratch if you won, He answered and gave a valid reply... And I don't have so much pride that I can't agree with a statement once proven wrong with valid and sensefull points...

    Keep up my dear fellow...

man I hope I can explain this right

when it comes to scratching it should if its a game dog

but theres always the exception always
all the years that Ive been dealing with these dogs Ive heard alot of different stories
and ive heard that theres been times where you have a dog that would fight all day
as long as the other dog is fighting back
ive heard stories where a dog wouldnt stop scratching broke legs and all
ive heard stories of dogs thet wouldnt scratch if they couldnt see the dog but as long as they could see the dog he was a scratching dog
heard of doggs that would scratch to dead dogs andfight the dead dog just as hard as wwhen it began
and some dogs wont scratch to a dead dog
even heard of dogs that were color blind so to say (wouldnt fight a white dog but wouldnt fight a brindle)

most of the time ive heard about a courtisy scratch it involved the loseing dog to scratch if the lose was because of a pick up just to show that the dog was still willing but the owner didnt want to lose the dog because he was matched into a better dog or the conditionng wasnt up to par

ive never perticipated in any ilegal activity all accounts above are from stories from older people of a time when the police would stop and watch a dog fight with you
    let my uncle tell it

    hope this makes since

And still if my dog won then I'm colectin my dough and we goin home. Not even in this situation would I agree to it... Nothin else to prove your dog lost. you wanna prove he game see if he will scratch at another dog. wont be mine. No sence in my dog takin unessisary damage when he has done his job.

Now, your leaning towards another topic, lol!

It's one man's opinon over another really. As for Rascal, he was ahead when he stopped at the 1:52 mark and his opponent ended up dying after the match. He was a young dog and this was his first contest. The fact is is that he did stop, so many will and do call him a cur. However, for a first time dog to go almost 2 hours, IMO I think Crenshaw did the right thing by taking him out again. As we all know, he did end up going past the 2 hour mark. But again, someone else will tell you their opinion as to why they are curs and would never use the blood, lol. It is what it is!

The way I was told was that the courtesy was for the loser to see if they still had it in them. The winning side had the right to grant this request, but the dogs would not be allowed to take hold, the loser would be released and if they made it across the winning dog would be picked up and taken out of the box.
I do believe that all dogs will quit eventually, it might be 10X down the road or it might be once, but at some point they will quit. The question is how far are you willing to let them go?

rules are agreed to before hand but special stipulations can be added like scratch to win. Of course this has to be agreed on again by both parties. I agree though if this was not agreed to I would never offer a courtesy scratch.......historically speaking

I get it good now, I talked with some people and I can see why you would want to coutesy scratch your winner:, so there is no doubt, no rumors to be started about oh he was looking like he wasn't gonna go no mo', nothing but knowing the fact that not only did your dog win, but he was ready for more.....Makes sence. and like it was said before, you would just snatch em before they take hold. Good thread guys.;)

I've heard a few stories like theses too over the last few years, and seen some quit hunting when they should be working as well.
