5 month old pup growled @ me....

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Mathematic, Nov 23, 2009.

  1. My girlfriend came home with some turkey bones and gave it to the pups(shooter and Siroc both 5 months). Shooter started growling at Siroc so my gf said STOP! and he started growling at her...So i got up and went into the room where they were at and I said STOP!!! he started growling at me, showing teeth and everything...so i picked him up by the collar and put im in the crate. after about 15min he started whining and crying and noticed that he pissed in the crate... my gf said that he probably dosen't remember why hes in the crate now...so i let him out and he started licking my hands...I can understand if he growled at Siroc but I was kind of pissed that he growled at both of us, who takes care of him...

is this something that i should be worried about or is it normal?

one other thing to add...this is the first time hes done this with a bone that had alil meat on it...he never done this with regular dog food..we raised him from 6/7 weeks old...we got him neutered last week and he still hyper...not aggressive but hyper.

this is probably the wrong thing to do, but when my dogs were young and doing that, i smack them on the nose just enough to get them to wince and then in a growling tone say no. the earlier you do this in their age, the easier it gets when they are bigger. you don't have to beat the dogs into listening but a couple harsh corrections at a young age should deem respect. Also, always maintain a pack leader relationship with your dogs so they never feel they need to act out like that. flame me if you think otherwise. the NILIF method works too. hehehe

  4. Thank you Michele for the links.....

@ forty6mantis, i definitely want to nip this in the bud....I was kind of thrown aback when it happened.

I think I spoke about this on bully radio, nature or nurture , this would be nurture. Those pups are to old to share "treats", and as far as the dog growling at you, that dog doesnt respect you, period.

  6. i can understand the "treat" problem...

Eventhough this is the first time it means he doesn't respect me?....what do you suggest?

Try to stay on topic please.

NILIF is a great tool that will help you in training your dog.

NILIF. You need to assert yourself as the alpha. The dog is testing you.

the dog is being a dog let it be one stop with the whole NILIF BS the way your dog is acting is the way a dog acts

A dog, ANY dog, that growls when a human tries to take away a bone, needs to be put in it's place before the behavior escalates. What if that was a child trying to get the bone away?

in the op no one said anything about taking something from the pups. She told the pup no and that is when it turned towards her happens no matter if there was a bone toy or nothing at all that kind of action will happen

Your right. That kind of action can happen, with ANY dog. You need to correct the behavior before it escalates, not shrug your shoulders and say: oh well, that's the way the dog acts.

Good reply and basically the same thing I would do.

As far as the Nilif thing - it is not the only way and if others have a need to state that Michelle, you certainly should allow them the respect.

I agree, NILIF is not the only way to go. But there's no need to insult my intelligence because I don't own this breed.

You respect me and I'll respect you, generally speaking.

Didn't know the poster was talking about "you" not owning this breed but rather thought he was referring to the author of the NILIF thing...

Regardless, why are you on this site if you do not own one of these dogs?

Because I love the breed and want to learn. And I've been on this site for quite a few years, as well as moderate another pit bull forum, but aren't you getting a little off topic?

To the OP: Feed the treats separately. You can try NILIF, or try other advice that has been given to you in this thread. Read the links I provided for you!!

i wasn't insulting you intelligence just letting the op know that you do not own one of these dogs so your advice might not be the best to take that is all had nothing to do with your intelligence michelle
