How much time and $ do you think it's going to take to selectively create this potpouri you have in mind? You might end up wasting 4 generations of dogs and still have nothing.

It takes a MINIMUM of 5 generations to stabilize an F1 Cross, and thats if you start with 2 breeds total, and 4 originals minimum and outcross to subsequent offspring.

If you're following good breed practises (eg. not breeding to bitches on their first cycle) - you could be waiting 15 years, to see what you finally come up with. Then if you want your line to survive you have to have other 5th gen's to outcross to or you'll end up with finite inbreeding options, and a non diverse bloodline with a non standardized breed.

Add more dogs, to give you outcross options, you add more money and more time, add more breeds, it gets to be even more of a headache. Thats why its taken over half a century for dogs like Dogo Argentino to gain a standard and recognition.

I like your idea. Maybe a Pitbull/Greyhound to a Dogo? The pit/greyhound to add game and speed to the Dogo. The Dogo is a good hunter already. Good luck with your catch dog, sound like it's gonna be fun.:D

they have apbt/greyhound crosses already and greyhound/collie and etc crosses so just basically find ones and play around with it however i dont think i would start breeding game apbts to anything else but game apbts theyre the perfect animal imo but yea lurcher form good stock and you got what u need check out the thread about them that i started with no idea they were well a breed of dog

hi im from ireland, and was wondering about you adding kerry blue to the mix.Are there good working lines of kerry blues in the states, they are very hard to come accross over here(working lines).supposedly poodle was added to them to improve coat for show ring.they were a legendary fighter/guard dog/hunter back in they day(remember old people talking about taking detours to avoid a kerry).there are still very good strains of working wheaten here ,id say there a close relative of the kerryblue.
if you start out with good drivey stock, you may well get good hunting stock long before 4 generations.First cross greyhound/apbts and 3/4 breds are fairly common over here and many are well capable of taking deer(so ive heard, its illegal here).I hope your experiment works out for you and happy hunting.

im not god and have no experience with creating my own breed of dogs, but im speaking from theory and imagination. have fun. lol

id do a scott AB from working lines. cross it with a game bred APBT.

take the ab/apbt and cross IT with a working GREYHOUND

take the ab/apbt/greyhound cross IT with a well bred r. ridgeback

tak IT cross it with a hound of some sort (id go blue tick)

take the ab/apbt/greyhound/hound back to another ab/greyhound

breed the good workers, cull hard on the rest.

I'd buy some good American BullDogs that are allready being used for exactly what you want, and if you have to mix them up just add APBT

  9. There are people that swear by the Mountain Aerdale for hunting big game. They are used to hunt Mountain Lions. I think that would be all that would be needed.

i forgot about the airdale.there are suppose to be still some good strains in the u.s.a.
Over here there all show bred from what ive seen, can be a serious guard dog too.An airedale x greyhound is supposed to be a very good lurcher(never seen one personally).Id say there is a lot of hound in the airedale so you could skip the kerryblue cross

  11. They can hold there weight well as well. They can grow to be close to a hundred pounds. That nappy coat that they have can also be a benefit for defensive purposes.

why not just go with a dogo?

  13. well the way i see it a good game bred pitbull are great catch dogs no need to try and make another breed know with this said me and a few of my buddys are working to make a line of cur dogs bred by us to suit the way we hunt but as far as catch dogs go just stick with a well bred pitbull and youll be good to go :D

  14. I would take a game bred pit as a big game hunter any day. The problem with that is that they are generally going to be on the small side. 50 pounds is a little light when going after something huge. Just a thought.

good luck sendin out the bulldogs when your bay dogs are still out there, theylle catch alright.........it jus may not be the pig they snatch up!.......

  16. i know that for some it might not work but for us it does and has been 4 a littel over 6 years now the thing is we run diffrent sex teams say for exp. we have 3 to 4 baydogs when we hunt so if we are useing a male bulldog as a catch dog then all the baydogs or female if runing a female catch dog all the baydogs are male

like i said might not work for every one but it works well for us :D

watch this video on the dogo. they will say what breeds they put into it to make the dog they have today. i would start with the dogo as a base if your gona do this. then just add whatever you think it lacks.they already have a pack hunting mentality, a good nose, are strong and are fearless. i dont know what else you would want to add to that? mabe you want an even bigger and more agile dog? add some american bulldog or mastiff and grey hound and breed back to a dogo.

Get a Dogo Argentino and make your own strain, you'll save lots of money and time.

Even if you want to make a new "breed" you'll have to buy alot of dogs from working stock, instead, do a good research on working Dogo Argentino, try a few and start breeding for whatever suits you better.

Or you can just breed Ambulls too (working ones) and make some mixes to get 50/50 dogs with good hybrid vigor and with luck some freak, but developing a breeding program is very expensive and time consuming until you get the final product that has all the traits you want... and so much culling too.

I wonder if adding sighthound to large mastiff type blood is a good idea. a dogo sized dog travelling at 35+ miles per hour would be putting some amount of force through its bones, tendons etc.Im not saying its not possible, but larger coursing and track greyhounds(say 80 to 100+pounds) are more injury prone.American track hounds Tend to have much longer careers than here in ireland but this injury resistance may be due to deeper sand and larger bend radii. The extinct alaunt sounded a bit like what your trying to do ,so if it was possible then it probably still is. If dogos are already fast enough for catching the game you want to ,then maybe you dont need to make the cross, or put a dogo stud over bitches of a cheaper, more easily obtained breed i.e greyhound, coonhound and take the bitches back to a dogo again when you breed them.I would be a little wary which breeds i combined as an unstable temperment could be a disaster in such a large powerful dog.then again it might be even more disasterous for the pig
