Choosing a pup

I know it's a crap shoot when you pick a pup as to how the dog will turn out but I've been told a seasoned dogman/dogwoman can pick the good ones pretty accurately, so what do you look for when you're picking a prospect for your breeding program?

 

the most confident,outgoing, and well structured pup get my pick.

 

which ever puppy has the biggest head. i go with my tape measure to check... and I also try to pick the ones with blue nose since its a special rare type..

There is no right or wrong way to choose a pup. Your chances are the same no matter what. I usually get the pups that seem to be the most independent, and I'm a sucker for the pups that aren't affraid to look me straight in the eyes.

i wouldnt necessarily say that. you dont want to get a dog that has a shitty physique or is skittish.

 

I usually like the feisty/hyper ones who are bouncing around or strutting around like they are the boss. I don't normally like the ones are skittish or shy.

I want to be there when its feed time and then choose.

 

I usually chose the runts. Ill sit around with all the pups also and pick the one who will come up to me and try to keep all the others from getting near me.

perfect conformation still won't change your chances of having a good dog.
true. conformation has nothing to do with the outcome of the animal. but im talking about the physical aspect of the animal when conformation come into play.
Conformation plays a big part in ability, but having a good physique or a bad physique doesn't change the state of mind in the dog.
there you answered it. ability. nowhere have i stated it will change their attitude.
A dog can care less about it's conformation.
yes, cause he really dont know what isnt suppose to be good. but i do. bad conformation in my eyes is an obstacle the dog has to overcome and sometimes will just hinder them from their potential.
Having a good dog is determined by the dogs state of mind and mental toughness as well as his confidence within its self, no physical characteristic can change that. sure, no physical characteristics can change the outcome but conformation plays a part in the animals ability and thats what i was getting at.

 

i bought a pup and she was shipped to me. she was skinny, shy, afraid, and i told myself i just got screwed! nevered bark didn't make a sound at six month she hit a hog she got out she was are house pet after that there was no stopping her was the best dog i had in the yard never had

My pup picked me. Her littermates stood around yipping from a distance, she came out and started biting my boot and pulling at the shoestrings. "I want her."

 

just because a dog doesnt have good conformation doesnt mean its not a good dog but why would u get a dog with bad conformation if you dont have to? you especially dont want to keep breeding dogs with bad conformation just bc they are good dogs. but there are always exceptions, i would just try to avoid them if possible
