Example, Microsoft's operating system Windows, open source operating system that will run on your PC Ubuntu Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu
If all you care about gaming on the PC there are alternatives to that too - wine from WineHQ - Run Windows applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X can run windows apps, and there are companies that target the gaming market specifically TransGaming Inc. that can run windows games (I care less for games, since I am not really playing any).
But what do I know, I am just a computer geek

Microsoft OS (2000,XP,Vist,7) + Macintosh (MAC OS,Snow Leopard. ETC) = Closed sourced software or Proprietary software. Which means the source codes are private and/or copy written. Which mean you have very little control over your computer as far as programming.

Linux based OS (Fedora,Ubuntu,KNOPPIX, ETC) = Open Sources software. As opposed to having a copyright it has a copyleft. Which means you have the freedom and are encouraged to make changes to the source code and share it with the rest of the world. But the catch is you only make money off the Kernal (Linux) by doing tech support and not selling the software.

I agree with the Linux option, I am not to computer savvy but I had a good friend put it on there for me on one of my older computers and I think it is 100 times better than Microsoft.

I also hate Microsoft's customer service, Case in point being about 4 days ago I telephoned the 800 number because I was having difficulty with my operating system. I have Vista installed on here and it was acting up pretty bad, When I telephoned I was told that my system was so old they didn't even have a guide to try and assist me in getting it back up and running, This laptop is also only about 7 months old mind you. To make a long story short they never did one dadgum thing for me and I had to call my friend to come over and get it back up and running again. The only thing that "customer service" representative kept trying to do was sell me a new operating system at a steep cost and when I gave him the information on my computer I was met with "Oh your going to need to purchase a whole new computer in order to run the new system efficiently and get the most out of it" Not a company I would recommend to folks if they can avoid it at all.

btw to let you know why. I have yet to find a good Ubuntu version that I like. almost all of them have some sort of annoying problem that pisses me off.

  13. So does every single version of windows Bridlexpitt. If you know anything about what is needed to get pretty much any Windows based operating system running at its true performance capacity you might appreciate the open source programs a bit more. I'm just being a total computer nerd here, but nothing pisses me off more than a fresh install of Vista that needs hours worth of stripping, registry changes, and program removal to simply get your computer to run at the specs it was sold to you as... =\
