i wouldn't exactly call what happened to them "winning."

you can't beat the machine, it's keep rolling, and most folks eventually exhaust themselves, family, finances, etc for a good defense. not to mention your life's work gets murdered by a "humane" society.

agree chef...they won there freedom but shit they lost there lifes work..and how much money do you think they spent trying to prove there innocence... before 9/11 i would agree with the argument about prob cause and warrents and all that but under the guise of fighting terror our rights are quickly being taken.. warrent less wire taps and all kinds of shhiitt..and no one blinks an eye over this shhiit...we see how screwed up this dna crap is but thats because we are aware of whats happening to the apbt but the general public dosnt and if they do they think its ok cuz there getting spoon feed this bs from the media about how bad our breeds is...the public is seriously uneducated about these dogs and thats because theres so much misinformation put out by these real terrorists[AR nut cases].....i guess there was something to the argument TG was making against dna..imo he was out ahead of this one

  3. I don't think the folks who are saying this will only be used to link dogs to blood evidence found in a fighting pit did not bother to read the whole article. This quote right here tells you they will use it try to figure out who the parents and offspring of a given dog are, and who the breeder was:

.... Last time I checked it was not a crime to own a dog related to a dog that was fought.... so why are they trying to find out the breeder and the relatives of the dog that was involved in a fight case? If you don't think this will be abused and misused, you are very naive.

    agreed...
to get a warrent all you need is probable cause...
    dna is there probable cause
then once they get there they take a bunch of lil things to build a case..ie treadmill..springpole..books mags...you get the idea
this is what these people do...there professionals
all they gotta do is paint a picture for a jury...and if you beat it..so what
they dogs will be dead before you can post bail if they have there way

Id imagine that due to years of close breeding, the D.N.A of most pitbulls would be quite similar. Not that it matters as this is just more scientific mumbo-jumbo used to justify FACISM ,which 60 years ago millions of americans gave their lives to prevent(funny old world)

CSI Puppy Dog: Bust of Regional Dogfighting Ring Leads to Pit Bull DNA Database

CSI Puppy Dog: Bust of Regional Dogfighting Ring Leads to Pit Bull DNA Database

    By Keegan Hamilton, Wednesday, Jun. 16 2010 @ 1:43PM

Last July, several law enforcement agencies combined forces with the Humane Society of Missouri to conduct the largest dogfighting sting in U.S. history. They raided 22 locations in 8 states, arrested 26 people and rescued more than 400 fighting dogs.

After the operation was complete, workers from the Humane Society and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) collected DNA samples from every pit bull that was seized in the operation.

Scientists from UC-Davis cataloged all the information and, yesterday, they announced that a database of dogfighting bloodlines is now officially up and running.

Investigators believe the database, officially called the Canine Combined DNA Index System, can be used to prosecute future dogfighting suspects by tying their animals to other known dog fighting rings.

"We know all these networks buy and sell dogs in a fairly small circles," says Tim Rickey, the former head of the Animal Cruelty Taks Force of the Humane Society of Missouri. "This will be an import tool. They can tie animals back to one or more convicted dogfighters and show they're from the same bloodline. It's a solid piece of evidence in a criminal case."

Rickey, who took over as the ASPCA's Senior Director of Field Investigation and Response after the July bust, said he had the idea of the database in mind even before the investigation was completed last year.

"We discussed how we could use this case to create more effective tools for law enforcement," he says. "This was a tool that came to the forefront. We planned how it would work and spent months and months discussing and developing it before it got launched."

Here's an explanation of how the system works and what it might mean for future dogfighting cases, via the ASCPA:

The database is similar to the FBI's human CODIS, a computerized archive that stores DNA profiles from criminal offenders and crime scenes and is used in criminal and missing person investigations. DNA analysis and matching through the database will help law enforcement agencies to identify relationships between dogs, enabling investigators to establish connections between breeders, trainers, and dog-fight operators. Blood collected from dog fighting sites will also be searched against the Canine CODIS database to identify the source.

"The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory has one of the largest sample databases in the world, said Beth Wictum, Director of the Forensics Unit of the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory in UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. "This is important for estimating the rarity of a DNA profile. The Canine CODIS database is unique because it includes many more DNA markers than are normally tested, and that provides greater power when calculating match probability or assigning parentage."

Feds Round Up Owner of Cannibal Kennel and Four Other Dog Breeders for Running an Alleged Dog-Fighting Operation

    By Kristen Hinman, Wednesday, Jul. 8 2009 @ 3:45PM

Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri Michael Reap announced today that his office has indicted five men on federal dog-fighting charges.

During an early-morning raid, law enforcement officials arrested Michael "Missouri Mike" Morgan, of Hannibal; Robert Hackman, of Foley; Teddy Kiriakidis, of Leasburg; Ronald Creach, of Leslie, and Jack Ruppel, of Eldon.

The feds also seized more than 150 pit bulls in the raid.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Hackman operated Shake Rattle and Roll Kennel. Ruppel operated Ozark Hillbillys Kennel. Creach operated Hard Goodbye Kennel.

And, are you ready for this one? "Missouri Mike" operated Cannibal Kennel.

The feds allege that the dogfighting went on between January 2008 and June 2009. A tip from the Humane Society of Missouri led the feds to sniff out the case.

This is horrible but the fact of the matter is if they have enough evidence to take your dogs, they are dead, end of story, DNA won't matter except in your trial. If you don't break the law or sell to those who do, you have a lot less to worry about.

Here's another big problem I see with this. Say they come up on a sceen after the fact and they take samples. They put these in there little database. Say some time goes by and I want a proven dog to use on my yard as a brood dog. Then one day they show up and want to take samples and little did I know, i bought a dog who is in their database. I'm gonna be in for a bumpy ride and all I really did was buy a damn dog.

This is a problem the law has nothing to do with it.Look say someone has a dog that was bred from the same litter as your dog and they get busted for what ever .Imagine then how things go.Its to late if they seize your dogs, they will say the dogs come from fighting lines and could be used for fighting.CASE CLOSED. This is bad.Someone already said isn't there an attorney to fight this before it gets enacted.

I did not read this as if it is a law. What I read is,this is a tool (National database). Now is it legal to use? And where is the bill number?

    The dogs are still dead...:(

I understand what you're saying that a lot of people that have been busted have been WAY too careless, but keep in mind that probable cause for dogfighting these days could be someone reporting "chained dogs with heavy collars" or "a harness used to force the dog to pull weight" or some other bullshit

All they have to do at this point, is establish a link. Also is this going to potentialy force these registries that have collected dna, to give ppl up?

Well this was in my email today. First reply that I got back from 5 of the registries that I contacted on this matter a week ago.

    Hello xxxxxx,
Thanks for your email expressing your concerns. We are looking into the information for our clients and will be forthcoming with further information as we get it. Please be assured that all client information is confidential and is not released to any organization or person unless authorized to do so by the dog owner. The article stated that the University of California at Davis Veterinary Genetic laboratory is the testing laboratory for the SPCA. The registries (ADBA, UKC and AKC) all use MMI Genomics for their DNA analysis and these two genetic laboratories use different systems that are not similar. ( i.e. they analize different alleles) For idenity or parentage you have to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges for it to be valid. I know this sound like a witch hunt, but we still have courts of law that requires legal use of evidence.
A fighting dog is a dog that is trained, conditioned and has been fought. It is not a dog bred from fighting lines. In the same way that a search and rescue dog is a dog that has been trained and used for search and rescue. Just because his mother and father have been used for search and rescue does not mean that he will be a search and rescue dog, unless he is trained and conditioned and used for this purpose. He might have inherited all of the physical and mental abilities to excell in this function, but unless he is trained and use for this purpose, guess what …. He is NOT a search and rescue dog. This is the same situation that we have when folks try to say that your dog is a fighting dog because one of his ancestors was used for fighting. Considering the breed history, if the SPCA, HSUS and others could use this argument in court, then there is no APBT or American Staffordshire Terrier that would stand a chance, because as our history shows, ALL come down from fighting dogs, as this was the original purpose of the breed back in the day, as our history shows.
Be assured that the ADBA is fighting for the breed and its owners and we will use all of our resources to protect and safeguard. We want responsible owners to get their dogs out to our clubs show and pulls to show off these dogs in a positive light. The only dog owners that have anything to fear are those that are using their dogs for illegal purposes.
    Regards,
    Amy G. Burford / ADBA
