So i was wondering how some of yall would define a dogman. Someone who has alot of years in the dogs? Someone who has accomplished something with the dogs. Someone who constantly gets results or someone who constantly put sturdy bulldogs on the ground. Someone with knowledge. Just wanted to know other people's views on the definition of the term. We not talkin about any two-bit nobody who owned some shit eaters since they decided they wanted to look tough in their hood.
Additionally, what would you say would make one dogman better than another in your opinion. Thanks for the opinion and insights this is jus for discussion purposes.

  2. Finally a great question. A "dogman" is someone who is dedicated to the dogs and the sport. He represents himself well, showing quality dogs on a consistent basis. He doesn't always win, and can even lose as many as he wins, but goes into quality competition. He doesn't spot-pick on newcomers. He truly wants to know where his conditioning, handling, feeding, selection process and overall knowledge stands up against the best. He conducts himself like a gentleman and loses graciously, shakes hands and keeps scratching back. He is not all about the money. He is NOT a puppy seller first and foremost. He stands by his word, does what he says, and says what he'll do, and he means it. He will give you a fair deal, and expects the same from you. He doesn't talk alot of crap, and let's his actions speak louder than words. When you go into a REAL dogman, you expect REAL competition. When you beat him, you can say you've done something. His reputation is on the line, and this reputation comes from his peers and his competition. The title of "dogman" should not be given out easily. It's earned thru years of proving himself over and over again. Any dope-dealer with a bunch of money can go out and buy an ACE dog that will win, even with inferior conditioning and handling, but this doesn't make him a dogman.

If you want choir boys go to church.

In the real world a dogman is nothing more than a man who has a way with dogs or is generally good with dogs. There are and have been many scoundrels who where excellent dogmen.

That's right, a dogman is a gambling man who is very competitive happens to have an eye for good dogs and knows how to get one in shape. Not the same as a breeder or a fancier.

Lol like I said I'm sure some had issues that weren't very desirable. But dude made it sound like the old timers were scum of the eaarth who were trigger happy to all poor sports. The best way I a could describe the stereo type is less than honest men that you prolly wouldn't want to trust alone with your wife or your account number lol although I'm sure you had your token sweet hearts the game was a majority of slick hustlers and con men!

someone who loves these dogs and takes care of them to the best of there ability. someone who will put his dogs well being above money and will keep them in the cleanest healthiest conditions possible. does he have to be a saint hell no who is but he better be an honest person and by that i do not mean hanging papers by honest i mean his dogs are what he represents them to be. dog men and dog fighters are not the same to me. but a dog fighter can be a dog man.you could have the best record in the world but if you yasrd looks like shit and you just throw your dogs out on a chain with ten twenty or thirty dogs and give them no attention you are far from a dogman. if you do not know how to take care of a dog after a hunt you are not a dogman if money is more important than the dogs you are not a dog man. if you love the game more than the dogs you are not a dogman.

then thay are not dog men they are dog fighters. norman hooten was a dog man ed crenshaw was a dog man clouse was a dog man o stevens was a dog man floyd was a dog man jerry was a dog man colby was a dog man armitage was a dog man tudor was a dogman yes he wass a bootlegger but that does not mean he was not a decent guy.yankee greg was a dog man trail driver was a dogman. all the people i just mentioned were all dogmen and were for the most part honest and caring people with wives and kids who loved this sport and chose to stay away from the element you just mentioned. truthfully it all depends on the crowd you run with these men were not criminals and what you named are people involved in the sport but they are involved in every aspect of life priests have molested children teachers have sold drugs lied cheated and molested children cops have murdered sold drugs and raped people doctors have sold drugs lied stole and cheated all things you just mentioned have been done by some of the most respected professions in the world. hell politicions fall in every category you mentioned

also criminals may be criminals to some and heroes to some george washington was a hero because we won if we lost he would have been a terrorist jesse james was a hero the the people of missouri and a criminal to the banks. not all drug dealers are bad people they just make bad choices. hell if i was born dirt poor with no family to speask of a government that does not give two shits about me and school system thet has failed the children i probably have sold drugs robbed and cheated.and you can bet the majority of people in this world put in that situation would have to. my point is the criminal element is in all factors of society not just the dogs

most of the people you named hung papers, lied, stole dogs and cheated. time cures everything right?? people often forget about the bad because the dogs were very good but in reality there is controversy to where these same men that are now looked up to got some of there dogs or how they were bred. we have all broken the law in some way, some to a more extreme than others but no sin is bigger than the other

i forgot to give my definition.....
a dogman is someone who dedicates his life and freedom to preserve the original standard of the breed, which in time he becomes highly knowledgable and considered as an elder/teacher of the breed. this is a title that he cannot give himself but instead it is given by other dogman which have reached the same level of experience.
