Yes those oak ones get more ecspensif. they are b around100/150 overhere without the under carrige. they look more ""retro"" and are heavy!!.
i prefear the wine barrels over water barrels as they taper narrow to the frond and rear holding on the heat in the middel of the barrel.
    The plasitic KK barrels
are defenatly the lightest and the best ones out there!!, but im a sucker when it comes for that vintage oak wood look hahahhahaha..

had one that would eat his house so I would just take it away during the day. He's gone now. I can't stand dogs that will completely destroy houses. A little chewing is tolerable but even that can be curbed by throwing them a log to chew instead.

You will miss out on a lot of very good dogs if you don't find a way to keep some of the difficult keepers. Often the most intelligent dogs are the most destructive/difficult to keep.

That dog not sticking around had nothing todo with his behavior on the chain. I can't stand hard keepers but I'll do things like removing the house or giving alternatives to chew on.

    Plastic insulates better than wood....

I had a bitch that would ONLY live in her barrel. She had chewed most the supports, had to replace them several times. My Mom felt bad for her and got her one of those expensive igloo houses... she literally ate it! HILARIOUS! The animal control came to our house and told me it was illeagel to have her in a barrel. I built her a wooden house, and put it out there, and the stubborn bitch wouldnt go in it. so, i left the wooden house and put the barrel back out there... she slept in the barrel, and sat on top of the wooden house.

Thanks Deathmetal. Julez, I had a little bitch that ate the entrance way off of a Dogloo before I threw it away. Got several that will eat a wooden house if you dont cover all corners with angle iron or metal. One that wouldnt sleep in a barrel or wooden house. She'd sleep on the ground with snow on her back in front of a barrel and wooden house. Had her in the garage when I opened a transmisson crate. Took the transmission out and she jumped in the crate and didnt want to get out. lol Cut a hole in the front, put a piece of roofing metal on top and she's been in it for going on eleven years. Crazsy ass dogs.

Anyone ever built a wooden dog house around a wooden barrel that you could take the barrel OUT of? Been thinking of doing that for extra insulation but it seems like it might be hard to clean if the barrel is attatched.

Saw this video the other day and really liked the house but was wondering how well it'd translate to a 55g barrel instead of 35... seem like the house would be HUGE if you did that.

Not that it really matters if the house it huge but the lighter the better right? Easier to clean and move.

Heavier timber would insulate the dog better tho Cliff would it not?

Probably, the benefit of barrels though is that you can get them cheap or free, and I'm sure you'd make up for any lack in insulation by putting hay around the barrel.

Menards , Lowes, Rural King if you have those stores. Usually they give em for free.

My bitch would do the same, sleep on the ground, rather than go in "proper house".. she loved her ghetto-fabulous barrel.

A few months ago I built another barrel dog house, thought I'd bump this thread up to share. I've always had the dual compartment (all wood) houses in the past but I like these alot better. Barrel disinfects alot better than the wood and you can remove the barrel in the summertime if wanted.
