knuckling out

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Babyshaiyene, Oct 22, 2010.

  1. We just got a new addition to the family on Saturday and as of today we noticed that he is "knuckling out". Hes about 9 weeks old now and is american staff terr mixed with bullmastiff. His dad was half staff and half bullmastiff and his mom is staff. So anyways i wanted to know if anyone has come across this in the pitt breed or bullmastiff breed and what to do about it. Any suggestions would be great. We already took him to the vet and she said that its most likely they would have to do surgery but i dont think she knew what she was talking about. I did alot of research online and found out what it is and i can't afford to do what she suggested and would like any opinions on it. Thanks so much!

I haven't seen this personally but I thought knuckling over was a dietary thing and can be corrected with special food. Maybe something to ask your vet about or look into.

After I posted this I got to thinking maybe Im full of it (I am not a vet). So I had a look on net no doubt you did also. One thing was never have them on a slippery surface put a mat down ( just notice your photo) and yes if treated early a special diet will correct this.

What are you feeding this pup? Looks like it may be rickets, which is caused by a vitamin D deficiency. Try giving cod liver oil and make sure he gets plenty of sunlight every day. If you let it go without treating it, the bones can stay that way permanently.

change to a lower protien puppy food..you can get some splints made for dogs and some stretch wrap...Put the splints on the legs leaving them straight(not bent like in a normal walking stance) and a week or so they will be right back in shape..the dogs looks like he is walking on stilts in the front, but It will work....

25% protein get the dog out into the sun more than 30 mins twice a day, and im surprised the vet didnt suggest splinting prior to surgery?

  7. Thanks for all the help. And you know after looking online im upset that the vet didnt say anything about wrapping with vet wrap or splinting. She made me feel like she just wanted to get my money outta me. So im going to try the wrapping and get some mats down on my floors and even change his food. I will let everyone know how hes doing within the next few days

  8. Im feeding him Purina one healthy puppy formula about 1 cup 3 times a day. I started wrapping his legs and hes walking great with them on, doesn't like them much but hes getting around much better. I was looking around online and saw that i should feed him adult food cause it has more protein??? Is that a good idea?? Also i was looking into giving him Ester-C 500 mg a day. what are the opinions on that??? And does anyone know of a good dog food to feed him or is the one that im giving him now ok????

Try Canidae, Purina is crap food. Canidae has an all life stages formula that has 24% protein and its not as expensive as some premium foods. Good luck with the pup!

I'd never seen knuckling over in the staffs & apbt's i had. then bred my 1'st litter
of American Bulldogs 10 pups all phisically ok.The 1'st 2 pups had only been left our
house a week.then we had phone calls saying the pups have deformed front legs
and that the vets recomend breaking the pups legs & ressetting them. They emailed
the pics of the pups legs & they looked bad.All the pup's still at home were ok.What
they were doing was feeding the pups to much. The bone's were growing to fast &
the ligerment's couldn't keep up, causing the legs to bow.All pups were on puppy proplan, they cut the amount they were feeding & 2 weeks later they were back to normal. Hope this site helps http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles.htm ps
dont put boiling water on ther kibble just warm,as you will kill the trace minerals

general rule of thumb anything sold at walmart isnt good for a pup. if you want to put the pup back on purina later in life, go for it. but atm lower the protien ester c is good, carpet and outdoor time.

This happened with a boerboel (South African mastiff) puppy that my grandad now has. They were over-feeding him puppy food causing him to grow too fast (happens a lot with mastiffs and danes). Puppy food is too rich for bigger breeds, which already have a tendency to grow very quickly.

They changed him to adult food and cut his food back a little and splinted his front legs for several weeks. Now he's perfectly fine.

You should change to a good quality adult dog food (i.e. Taste of the Wild Pacific stream formula, which has great nutrition, but lower protein than the other formulas, and it's not that expensive) and don't feed him quite so much. Get your vet to splint the legs instead of just wrapping them. They need to be rigid to keep his weight from making things worse every time he takes a step.

And as already suggested, it definitely helps to add Vit D to his diet and make sure he gets plenty of sunlight.

    Good luck!

My new pup was knuckling out when I got her. I started feeding her TOTW canned food, and 1 raw egg a day and within 4 days she was straightened up.

Just canned food n eggs...?? How much???

I gave her 2 cans a day. I split it up throughout the day, and 1 egg a day until she started looking better. She also had dry dog food laid out for her throughout the day. After she started to straighten up pretty good I started giving her an egg once a week. After about 4 or 5 days she had started to look good. Now I cannot even tell they was anything wrong with her.
Whenever I got her she was ate up with some kind of worm that regular pancur wormer wouldn't get rid of. Even with those worms she started to straighten up good, but after we got rid of the worms completely is when she healed. Whenever I got her at 8 weeks she weighed around 6 lbs, and now shes around 4 months and 21 lbs.

some are suggesting lowering the protein intake which may be causing the problem and then suggesting TOTW which is a high protein feed and adding an egg on top of it, even more protein. Switch to Natures Variety or Canidae, they both have optimal protein for kibble and are good feeds and no egg.
