I wonder if there are any known cases of Ataxia in purebred APBTs or is it a desease that only is seen in Amstaffs?

    What do you think?
Can Pitbulls have Ataxia in there genes also?
Did the Amstaffs get the Ataxia from Pitbulls or did it develope after the seperation of the breeds?

Yes, APBTs can have ataxia & yes, there are certain bloodlines in which it is recorded. Which breed got it from which is a mystery since the breeds are oft crossed. I would hazard to say the ASTs introduced it to the APBTs since they have a longer record of ataxia in their breed, but that is just a guess on my part.

    Happy holidays ...

But are there any proven cases of Ataxia among purebred APBTs
    Thats my question.
Not if Pitbull/Amstaff crosses has it.
Which bloodlines do you mean have Ataxia?

For a long time, Am Staf owners were seeing the odd symptoms in their dogs, but had no idea what it was (watch the video mentioned in that thread). Inner ear infections, brain tumor....no one knew.

The test is a wonderful new tool that enables a breeder to know the genetic status of his dogs and he never need produce another affected dog.

Symptoms at first are very subtle -- a sideways step here and there, odd shake of the head, etc...AND, it very often doesn't even show up til 5 years or so...

Are ataxia and NCL the same thing? I know they've been finding NCL in American Bulldogs, but there's plenty of APBT and Amstaff in those.

Ataxia is the same as NCL-A But there are differnet types of NCL.

I noticed the other day that Optigen is now offering the Ataxia test for APBTs too. Last year when I tested my AST girl it was only for Stafs. Guess its popping up somewhere or like someone else mentioned, its from crosses...but the mother and father would have to be crosses since the dog needs a mutation from both parents to be affected.

I was very happy that my girl came back clear! If you search on Youtube there are a few videos on dogs in the end stages. I am not someone that would let it go there...
