Dam half eating her pups

Last summer my main brood bitch had her first litter of pups . I thought i had taken all the necessary precautions such as making sure she was healthy , taking her in the house and setting up a whelping area in a secluded part of the basement where it was quiet & secure . After having 10 healthy (or were they) pups she began to eat them but not the whole body just either the head & front end or the hind legs up to the rib cage . After I removed the remaining pups and had them checked out at the vet I began feeding them on a schedule of every 1 1/2 hours by bottle & dam when she could be calmed down enough to feed . They began to die off 1 by 1 seemingly for no reason they would be fine 1 minute crying and crawling around and take a gasp and be dead the next literally . Did the dam know something I didnt or was she just a horrible mom ? I've since did the breeding again and shes do to drop in the next few weeks . I would appreciate any insight and suggestions to help save a long awaited litter . Thanks in advance

either nature taking its course or she had hypocalcemia. it wouldnt hurt to give her some calcium after she gives birth

  3. Hand feeding pups is tough if you're trying to use a bottle. If you don't know how to tube feed your chances are going to be slim.

As for the bitch eating the pups, mystery of nature.

my first attempt at bottle feeding went horrible it was a pain in the ass getting up every couple hours feeding them then taking a warm wash rag and rubbing there genitalia to make them go at first i thought it was going great then then next day they started dieing one by one and at the end i had all this time invested but was only able to save one pup this was over 15 years ago i did this mind you and it was very very difficult so when boogie says it is please believe that 1 out of 7 ain't bad i don't guess LOL but all you can do is try if you are willing and hope everything turns out well

  7. Sounds like to me the mom was a great mom. 99% of the time a mother eats the pups is because she knows there is something wrong with them its instinct. This is proly why bottle feeding didn't help them any. If the only issue is the mother is a poor mother then once the pups are removed by a competent owner they should be fine and start to thrive.

Similar problem for me, unless you have a dog that will nurse the pups after the bad mama gives birth there's not much to do, but bitches liked that need to be culled anyways...

there a buddy of mine who had a litter and the dam ate all the pups so i told him that this could be a problem so i told him that she knew that the pups where going to die. but if i was you i would get rid of her becuz she could do it agian

  10. Thats right she could do it again and if there is a problem with the new born pups she should do what she did. I bet she won't do it if the pups are naturally born healthy. She was smart enough to know something was wrong thats why she did what she did and its why the owner couldn't save them. Had the pups been healthy removing the mom would have 100% fixed the problem and would have lived but they didn't hence it was a problem with the pups not the mom. Get her healthy , breed her to a healthy male and hopefully the pups will be born next time fit and healthy and I bet she cares for them like a pro mom. This is not uncommon and getting rid of a good gyp because this happened one time would be pretty ill advised. Something was wrong and the mom knew it and handled it. It is what it is

I bought a Dam that was know to do eat some pups. I prepared her with the upmost and proper healthy diet that i could when i bred her and while she was carring pups. With trying to make her the most comfortable she still ended up eating some pups. I removed the ones she went for after she ate the first one. I let her have the rest of the litter and let her calm down and put the pups i took out back in. She accepted them, but i did notice the pups that i put back in couldn't nurse. The pups couldn't suckle and didn't make noise like the others. I tried to get the 2 pups i took out to nurse on her tit but after 2 hours of them trying and 2 hours of me trying didn't help. Needless to say she ended up eating both of them when i left her alone overnight with them but the other pups in the litter she is fine with. As upset as i was about it, i think she thought something was wrong with them, i thought something was wrong with them, if she was right i will never know.

they need calcium at the end 2-3 weeks before birth . some bitches need it quite . and most are hungry as hell . you can give them food all the way up till birth and if she hAS food there she can eat if she wants . if you take the pups you need a heating pad . you can get them where you can set the temperature . if they get 1 degree colder than they should you will star to have a die off . it's called puppy herpes . they cry and then die . and then you have the bitches that are crazy . just hold them down and feed the pups and then take them away . do it for 2 weeks or more if you can and then bottle feed . 3 weeks old and they can eat puppy food and goats milk from the feed store just ask them . or get it from the vet .

was she a wild girl all the time ? some bitches need to settle down . breed them later in life . or if she hears or sees things around her that gets her excited . you need to think of all these things . they sometimes are just really hungry to . i keep food there 24/7 with mine . or breed her let her have the pups and stay with her the whole time while birthing and take them . muzzle her if you have to and hold her down to let them eat . always keep them warm . and take them from her after eating .
