its all his philosophies,theories & life experiences..... everything from feeding,keep & breeding...... richards a good guy, if your too poor to afford it then boo hoo.... but if your money is right and you want some good reading material, id say you cant go wrong.......

 

a friend is sending me the book to look at, and ill give my review of it when i can, may take a while. Always good to read new stuff.

 

Are you talking about Schoolteacher's book? I know there was more than a few people upset about their names ending up in there. Outside of that, I haven't heard any negative comments about anyone's books.

I was asking merely, because i did not recall hearing of this one. I asked someone I know, as i breifly heard of the book before, but never actually saw it. I hope to be checking it out soon. Now the bell rung in my brain.

 

For one I am happy that there are still people willing to take time to share and give insight with this breed. This isnt the next harry potter and the guy def not going to get rich selling these. I'll end up getting it eventually.

I read Big Red,it was a disappointment. Especially for what it cost

I cannot wait to get it and see what SB has to say! He is very well spoken and anything he writes is well thought out and well written and is very captivating for anyone interested in the breed and its history.

 

Haven't read it, but wouldn't mind getting it once $ gets a lil better here. I do enjoy his youtube vids though.

 

So did you read it yet. What did you think? Trying to figure out which book to get for Christmas. My wife keeps on asking so she can get it ordered but can't decide which book to get

 

I bought the book when it first came out.

First let me say Schoolboy is a stand up guy. I met him at a show and was talking to him and he had a few copies of his book since it had just been released. I didn't have the cash on me but he gave me an author's edition book, signed it for me, and wrote his address on a piece of paper "just mail the payment to me when you get a chance, I know you're good for it,"

Now honestly the editing on the book is a little rough. There's a some typos in there and there's a part where a paragraph is repeated. But you know what he's saying and those typos are things that should bother the editor and the author more than it should bother you. I'm sure those are things that will be straightened out in the next run if the book sells enough. The writing is also a little more informal but that's because its written by Schoolboy himself not some armchair expert with a PHD who's never seen a bulldog in his life. Its in his own words kind of like you're sitting down talking with him and he's telling you all of this.

As far as information goes its not a how-to book. Its not going to WOW you with new things you didn't know about the breed. He does include his keep but it's not like other books that talk about how to pick a dog, roll, match, condition, feed, supplement, build whelping boxes, breed, post-match care, general veterinary medicine, etc. This is not a complete handbook. But really anybody with access to Google can find write-ups on that info. If not then ask on this forum and I'm sure someone who either knows how to do it or has a book that talks about it can get you the information you need.

In his book Schoolboy talks about some of the dogs he owned, his insights and experiences with them, and he gives first-hand accounts of some of their matches. Thats not really info you can get anywhere else other than talking to Schoolboy himself. He's not some armchair expert, he's a guy who bred and worked his own dogs and had some good ones and had some success. I think thats worth reading.

 

Thanks for the reply. You pretty much answered my questions. I think I'm gonna go ahead and have the wife get this one for me and have my daughter get me the one on jack Kelly. Eventually I'd like to get the rest of the SDJ yearbooks but going to go with these 2 books right now and when I have money to burn and find a copy in good condition would like to grab the complete gamedog. Waiting for a copy of this book and Schoolboy is visiting South Africa soon to host some seminars on the breed - help educate the masses which I think is fucking awesome, his doing seminars in 3 major cities, Cape Town / Durban and Johanesburg.
