Just wanna get your input on this situation I encountered today...

While walking my trusty companion, two other people were walking theirs, and one of the dogs (Lab) showed aggression toward the other dog.

I saw the handler of the Lab command his dog to sit, and he then took the leash and smacked the dog's lower back hard a few times. I actually winced when I saw it.

I turned around and took about 2 steps before I turned back around and walked toward the handler and his dog. From across the street I told him that it's his business, but that hitting his dog like that was a sure way to destroy the bond between him and the dog. He said he was just mad at the dog and I said I understood, but that hitting the dog was not good. He walked off.

Should I have minded my own business? What would you have done? Just curious.

    Thanks for your response.

while i agree, its fucked up that thats how he treats his animals, and probably doesnt deserve them, they are HIS property.... it wasnt your business......i suppose its better that you approached him and gave him your input instead of running of to the authorities about it

I totally agree with laced and will add that we don't like other people making OUR dogs their business. And as long as your input wasn't aggressive, I say no harm, no foul. I still wouldn't make a habit of it.

I would have minded my own fucking business.

Its like telling a parent how to discipline there kids, some will use the old fashion spanking and some will use the time out method but what ever method they choose its basically NONE of your fucking business.

I agree. By no harm no foul, I of course mean he didn't pick a fight or make a scene with a bulldog at the end of his lead. But I caution that you never butt into anyone's personal business, especially with dogs, in such a way again. It's just really not your place.

Your intentions were good but perhaps your view was from a APBT perspective???.......nobody that has a 'backbone' can turn their back on everything that doesn't concern them personally....Humanity.

I agree, you should of just left it alone. Not your business. What if he didn't pick up his dogs shit, were you gonna remind him to do it??

I would have minded my own business, but if I said anything I would have said use your hand instead of the leash, I don't believe in hitting a dog with an object, you can really mess things up quick especially if you have a dominant dog that will test you, using an object just teaches them to fear it, different story when you have nothing in your hand some dogs will use that to their advantage. I'm not much for hitting dogs either, but sometimes it is necessary to each his own.

What would I have done? I'd have told you to fuck off, if I was him that is. Next times someone passes you speeding you make sure you catch up to em and pull em over and say hey buddy its not good to speed you'll get a ticket. Gotta mind your own business man. Like stated before we don't want opinions on our dogs

    Dude, you got a lighter?

i've always felt/trained positive praise gains better rewards, but no doubt, each to their own. only thing i wonder is, if he's smacking the dog, "hard" in public, what goes on in private?
your suggestion was obviously done with well meaning and good intent and i probably would have suggested the same thing you did.

Dogs are like people. Some need a voice to get the message while others need their ass handed to them to get the message.
