If just one dog ever failed to make it then it's not silly at all.

Silly is not the word I would use to describe a courtesy scratch, its just NOT NEEDED, as a courtesy scratch has no bearing on the outcome of a show, hence why its considered OPTIONAL unless both parties agree to it at any given time.

It is a critical moment and needs some verification if you ask .....well ...most everyone it seems...

^^This. People are so set in their old ways and can't think outside the box. The winning dog should always show it is willing to scratch and therefore scratch last. A dog that is going to quit should not win.

Depends on the crowd, in some past situations it's been the best to grab my mutt and as Steve Miller so famously said 'take the money and run'
In other words, "thanks, nice to meet ya, gotta go!"

But seriously, when I was on the winning team there usually wasn't any doubt or shit talking about my charge, I never liked dishing out unneeded punishment to the loser hence why scratch into a beaten dog?
On the other hand, yes the losing animal should have the opportunity to prove willing but to let them actually take hold in my opinion shows a lack of class and sportsmanship.
When it's over it's over, emotions at that time are usually running high and cooler heads should prevail. This is where a good ref comes in.

I understand both sentiments....yay and nay. It is, however, a situational thing. It's also a choice thing.......sometimes a matter of what one might consider a need, based on the situation and what a handler/owner sees as to whether a courtesy has merit or not. I don't think it's a matter of "old ways" at all.

If you win your competition, and can feel that your dog is raring to go, I see little need. But, if you lost, and picked up, it might be a matter of SEEING that you need to get your charge its aftercare and take it home. If that is the situation, and both agree that it's ok to courtesy the dog that was picked up, I see no problem in the winner complying with those wishes, and I fully understand that need and have seen its merit on more than a few occasions.

as tdk says it's choice...some won't cause they feel there charge can't make,,spec;after a hard race..some will even after a hard one...????...some like to ya leave ya guessing...????..in other word's some will feel there charge rareing to go,,but other time's they have a tired one in there arm's and may-be ..doupt he/she will go..or be able to go..????so lot's of reasons why some do an don't...............????????????...there has been a-lot who have won 5 races or more and courtesy then at a last race just stand there..????..everybody different

Many years ago I was at a race where the one on the opposite side was coming slower each time he had to make a scratch and taking longer to leave the corner. Each time I was saying "next time he is not coming across", but he did after an 8 second count. Next our charge stood in the corner not going across after he showed no sign at all of quitting the race. The other party could not contain their joy, grabbed their mutt and ran, but to this day I still believe he would've stood with the next scratch.
I therefore believe to remove all doubt I would always want to have a courtesy. I would like to take him home knowing he left no doubt in my mind, but since all this is not legal I would not compete at all to begin with. ;)

I guess I hit post a split second after Ben. It looks as though we basically said the same thing, so obviously we agree. Lots of things are situational, and require what one deems needed at any certain time. If one hasn't seen those situations, one may not quite understand them.

Although you see it plain silly, Stoney, you are getting great input on the reasons as to why this is done - and why in some cases it would be silly, while in others it'd be a must. - every occurance is a bit different.

    both going slow
but one a tiny bit more ..this owner understand ...what ever happen mine is not gonne make it .
and he is a real sportman .
then he ask the other ....if yours make a sratch .. right now ...then you winner .
other does and is winner ...
you try to win with your dog and the rules
