i've been wondering about this for a while. i've seen others wonder about it too. but here's my point. i think the name "american pit bull terrier" or "pit bull" is too far gone to say. you see all these misinformation groups spreading lies and, well, misinformation. every other mutt in a shelter is a pit bull. and Huffington post didn't help with their butt kissing "pit bull week". as a young person i am honestly worried about the future. i hope to own game dogs one day, but how can i if they've been driven extinct by the media? in my opinion, one new way to save the breed is too change the name. it's been done before. they used to be call, officially, american bull terriers, then the name was switched to 'american out bull' because people were breeding mixes i assume. then in 1934 they were officially called yankee terriers. but the name didn't stick. what i think needs to be done is an official announcement by the sporting dog registry or ADBA (sigh) that game dogs are a different breed entirely. they should point out the physical, mental, and general difference between these dogs and the other "pit bulls". a good point should be made of size, temperament, and most of all that this dog is a terrier. then a request should be taken to the government saying that adba or sdj registered dogs under the name american pit bull terrier that were not adopted from pounds or shelters, that came from a list of recognized lines, and have taken temperament tests proving them at least as 'friendly' as, suppose german shepherds (lol), should be exempt from BSL. does anyone else agree a name change is in order?

Agreed, and I already don't call mine that. Is that a pit bull? Nope, It's a this and that.

    Can of worms...

Be glad granny and joe blow own "pit bulls". That just means these game dogs are only "pit bulls"when the shit hits the fan. Designating them as pure "game dogs" would be a disaster IMHO. Somethings are just better left unsaid.

Me too. But what's said when their next response is something along the lines of , " An American Bulldog? That's doesn't look like one."

I'm hoping for a serious response.

I could go either way on this but I can tell you that where I live, most people don't think my dogs are pitbulls. I have a 50 lb bitch that's been called a chocolate lab. I've also had people see her and say I've never seen a pitbull that small LMAO! My biggest issue is what some of you hit on, when someone asks what do I say? I'm tired of saying pitbull because that usually drags you into it's all how you raise them and they're big babies bullshit conversations and if I distinguish apbt then they'll really get confused. Maybe bulldog is the right word and if they ask american bulldog, just say no an unregistered line of old working bulldogs who knows.

Changing a name wont change Breed Specific Legislation. Getting RID of BSL is what will make the change.

I cant fathom how that law was even considered and passed to begin with as it is a totally Unconstitutional and morally wrong law being Prejudice/racist and unjustly/unfair. Oh wait I can sum it up in one word >CORRUPTION< LMAO.

ooh nice one! i hear boxer x lab for blacks. chesapeke x ambull for livers. lol.but beside the point i think we should all read this: Many shelter dogs mislabeled ‘pit bulls’ - Toledo Blade

    because of this one quote

experts my foot. and they define pit bulls as am staffs or staffs. which means game dogs could be greyhound boxer bulldogs for all they care.

I'm afraid that won't change anything. Let's say all registries and people involved agreed on a new name. I only see two scenarios happen when the public figures it out:

Pitbull-type dogs --> *New name* type dogs
Pitbull- type dogs (Apbt - sbt - amstaff - whatever else they throw in the mix nowadays) --> Pitbull - type dogs (*New Name* - " " -" " - ...)
    Just my thoughts.

Far be it from me to nit pick but isn't your name "bluedoglover"? Since when did bulldogs come in blue? The "blue" bs is what helped destroy this breed. From shitty breeding to media misnaming. In your own name is a bit of the problem you're mentioning.

Now in answer to the question I had a few ppl beat a saying into my head "bulldogs and ban dogs til otherwise proven" as in no pit unless it's been in the pit and proven itself. As that's illegal we all have bulldogs; -)

it has been along time, this is what I have been saying but depending on where you are and who you are you already are aware of the names some go by, I am using the one Paul Sofiakis told me a few of'em called theirs .. International Sporting Hounds , but they have standards in many forms and randomly changing to fit others desires is not one. Now will a New name stick, We can not ask other already here groups to take part the connection is to strong. And most sorry to say should, will be excluded but that there lies the biggest problem the grouping of the humans to see eye to eye and have the same understanding and want. Without Wanting anything but the True Form of what is chosen to be and nothing else. I get asked what our my dogs at least once a week, I always say I.S.H's they look confused and I just say they are family bred dogs that go very far back and have carried a few names over their time... once, recently I was asked if my preg. at the time dog was a mini pit, didnt know we had them but i also took time away from inter space lol and when I came back there were these things called bullies and not the human version I was like wtf so yeah mini pit fkn stupid humans. 185% AGREE WITH CERTAIN BREEDERS GATHERING TOGETHER AND MAKING A NEW NAME ... best chances, NO SCATTER BRED DOGS..
