  1. Hello gentlemen, I am new to the forum and also new to the legitimate side of the game dog. I am about to purchase my first legitimate dog this weekend, but I have a question. A few years back a friend of mine was given two dogs, which I later took in and raised myself. As far as he knew the dogs were supposedly jeep/jocko, which is commonly misused by illegitimate breeders in our area, but there is no paperwork or pedigree to prove that. As a newbie I am completely unaware on how the tracing thing works. Is there any way to have DNA tests done to find out what they are exactly? Are there certain characteristics to each line that I could use to gage?

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately there's no way to tell. DNA tests will only give a very vague description of what they "believe" the breeds of dogs are. Not worth it, IMO. Good looking dogs though.

No. Just be happy with what you got if you like it. Good luck

After a second look at the photo I'd be careful with the top of that earth anchor you have the chain connected to. I'd be surprised if you don't deal with the chain tangling up around that all day. If I was you I would take a sledge hammer or similar and bang that down into the ground further.

The first question should be do they have the qualities you like!

And clean the area before you snap a picture. Jus sayin'.

  7. Thanks for the advice. As I said I just raised these two, and had nothing more than pictures and YouTube videos to go off of. I will definitely be doing that.

No real way to know if you don't know the person who bred the 2 dogs together to make those dogs. Only way to find out if they are what they should be is to drop them onto the carpet....

Disclaimer - I am not a breeder with no intent to do so.

Over the years, each dog I’ve owned I’ve been able to trace their individual pedigrees to the beginning of time, so to speak. Before internet pedigrees, I hand wrote some of the lines out to 10 generations.

The only dog I’ve owned without a pedigree for me to study is the one in the avatar, given to me free with a veterinarian health plan by a relative. For arguments sake, let’s say I heard she’s down from “the old Pat Patrick lines”. Roger that, and so what.

The 'so what' is she is a solid family dog with bulletproof health, balanced drive, nice structure and athleticism. To me the dog is priceless and just as good or better than others I’ve owned (and paid for) with the ADBA, UKC "PR" or AKC pedigree.

A good dog is a good dog. Enjoy.

DNA profiling can be very useful only if any of the dogs in the pedigree is DNA profiled. For example let's say Jeep was DNA profiled and you got access to the results you could tell how much of a "jeep" is your dog.

If I had the facilities where I live I'd profile my best dogs.
