Chain Length

Just wondering what chain length everyone uses? And what size chain do you use? I'm getting a set up going and got a 5/16'' chain, 10ft long in case I have to cut some off. I was thinking something along the lines of 6-8ft. My dog will not stay on it all the time. Mostly, for now, when going to the bathroom and when I'm working the other one. He'll probably see it for about 5-6 hrs a day. He's about 7-8 months old right now, 50ish+ lbs. But chances are I'll keep this set up for him in the future when he's full grown.

I would go no less then 3 or 4 times his body length from head to butt

If you have the room use the whole 10 ft ;)
And 5/16 is a perfect size chain :D

8 ft is what I use most generally - most are 1/4" but for a couple of dogs I use a 3/8".

I've got a 15 footer but it's a cable instead of chain although I'm thinking of switching. I like the cable because it's light but I'm wondering how much stronger the chain would be. He breaks everything no matter how heavy duty I make it.

Well mines probably too long compaired to everyone else. Ive got a HD spade rod thats level with the ground with a 360 degree swivel and a 15 ft 5/16'' chain attached to it with a 20 ft 1/4'' cable hooked to the chain. Krystal has lots of running room and when she wants back in I open the door and she can walk in the house to get unhooked. Really nice in cold weather.

I always get decent deals on tow chains and they come in 14'. I prefer chain over cable cause they are less likely to wrap around a leg or other body part.

...also less likely to get chewed through.

And I loved the Boondock Saints.

I'd like to hear some pros and cons of chain versus cable since I'm thinking of switching. Luckily my boy is too dumb to chew it. lol

Well if you want to keep your grass then a chain isnt the way to go lol.

  16. Cable can rub up against corners of your house, kennels, or other items in the yard. If there is a protective shroud over it, that will wear off, then the cable will start to rub. Strand by strand, the cable will get weak in that one spot...you might not even notice it, until one day....."Hey, where the hell is Rover?"

A decent-weight chain also works as a passive workout for the dog. He's gonna walk around and pull that chain with him....just like lifting weights.

So much for this cable tie up being for 250 pound dogs. He's popped those springs that are supposed to hold over 1700 pounds of pressure like it was thread.
It doesn't get so much wear and tear as he is essentially a house dog and only spends small amount of times on it. It's more him running and snapping them cause he's a big meat head.
