Slatmill stabilization

Discussion in 'Products & Equipment' started by elviejon01, Oct 6, 2016.

  1. hello,

Wondering if anyone has a mill similar like mine with plastic wheels. The issue I'm having is my bigger dogs make the mill move when they run it hard. I have tried reducing the air on the tires To stabilize the mill and it helps but it still moves. If I remove the wheels then it will be inclined and I'd rather not do that and would rather keep it straight. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

Sell it and get a dog trotter! Highly quality piece of equipment and if you ever have any problems such as your having now gambler will take care of you. Amazing customer service!

If the mill itself works well enough....buy some solid type wheels the same size with wheel locks.

or.....take the wheels off and lengthen the legs.,,,

Put some cement bricks/blocks on the front and back wheels or take off the wheels and use something to brace and level the back end up....Wheels are convienent when needed to move because they are heavy but when the wheels cannot lock in place then it makes it very unstable with a lot of rocking the faster the dog runs it.

Good advice, I would take the wheels off. That way you can put them back on when you need to move it.

  6. Thanks slim. Never thought of this one. Gonna start wheel shopping lol.

  7. Dogtrotters are amazing. Budget wont allow it at this time lol. Outside of the wheels its a very good piece of equipment the previously owner put several charges through keeps with this particular mill.

  8. Tried cenderrblocks and it still moved on me.

Put some eye bolts into the floor and anchor it down when a bigger dog is on it.

Seems to me that your mill is not square.. how many revolutions do you get when you spin it?

  11. How do you measure revolutions? Do you measure the entire belt itself spinning or the big hub wheels?

Put a piece of tape on a slat and count how many revolutions.

  13. About 4 full spins when I push it with my hand

Not sure how many spins you should get but I would assume based on your wheels and wood slats that it should spin a little more freely.
I have roughly the same but with different wheels and rubber slats.. some like it more free spinning but I prefer a little tension.

Start checking your corners to see if the are square. Also try putting inflatable tires on all 4 corners and it should dampen the offset.

If the mill is indeed square, axle to axle.....

Those type of two piece lawn mower/go-kart wheels will work fine if there was an upgrade in the bearings. The original bearings were designed for durability not speed. They are a 5/8th diameter bearing. A racing bearing serves the purpose I=on the mill a little better.

Your issue seems to me to be one of vibration causing the mill to change position when your larger dogs run it hard. From the photo the floor surface looks to be concrete. If that's what the mill stands on when in use I'd guess that's your problem as those plastic castors slip and slid on that surface with just a little vibration. Mine did and it had breaks fitted. I solved it by simply putting a rubber matt under the mill. Recently I replaced the rear castor for rubber blocks which seem to be working.

I would check more then axel to axel.. check every corner, legs and uprights. The rubber mat ideal sounds like it may help.

  18. How do I check if the mill is square?

Measure corner to corner. The measurements should be the same or close.
I would start with hub to hub, then the left and right sides of the mill. If your out of square it's gonna cause tension which will cause your track to not run as freely.
Google how to check for square. It will explain better then I can.
