What would be a good bite object for spring poling? She likes stuffed animals and bears, but those would rip to easy.

I use a rope now and she keeps adjusting her bite grip and falling down. When I hold the rope in my hand and lift her up she doesn't slip. I need something that wont tear easy when she is hanging and I also need something with grippage(if thats a word).

I like a bicycle tire on the spring pole (some tyres have a thin wire in the edge of them remove that 1st)

I've used the bike tire with wire removed and found it lasts all of an hour or less. They shred that like it's nothing. I've used old denim, old leather, rope tug toys work very well IMO. I've never used the cow hide, but have seen many others use it with optimum results. Only thing is some say the dog may ingest the hair off the hide if left on.

I just bought a thick 12 1/2" BMX tire. She still isn't hanging even with treats in it. What could it be? Why does she only hang when I'm holding it? She also just wimps out after about 3-5 minutes of trying to pull it down.

The dog shouldnt be "hanging" in the first place. A dog needs to have at least 2 feet on the ground at all times. To answer your question....I use a heavyduty 4'' Diameter rope I had laying around in abundance. Works great.

Oh, I thought if she hang on the tire, then she be getting an even better workout then when I let her chew on the tire. It just made sense to me.

Quite the opposite. The dog is getting barely any workout hanging from it. The only muscle being worked is the neck and jaws which are going to work just as hard on the ground. However, with all 4 legs on the ground the legs, chest, back, and almost every muscle gets worked. Its best to keep 4 legs on the ground if the dog will do it, although some dogs will insist on only having 2 legs on the ground. Definetly lower the bite surface so he can be on the ground at all times. Not only is a much better work out, its MUCH safer.

I figured it would tighten her jaws, and besides it looks cool. I'll try to keep her on all 4's before she falls on her back.

Rock after reading your reply I thought about it & wow that makes sence I always let my dog work the spring with 2 legs of the ground, thanks for the tip as its all those we things that wee tend to over look at times when conditioning:D

I don't have a yard to use a springpole with my girl but has anyone thought of using the tirebiters? You can buy them in petstores, they are expensive though. They are mini, heavy duty tires and you can get them in three sizes and you can get them with or without a rope attached. My girl loves this to tug on and really gets a good grip, and it is quite durable.

From my view that looks like the same two tires I got for my girl who chewed her way through them in a matter of days. I had that cheap rubber everywhere in my Apt. I got her a real 12 1/2" BMX tire which is really thick and very durable. If your dog no longer has puppy teeth and big jaws then I would suggest a thicker tire. Make sure to take the wire out if one is in the tire. From what I heard these dogs chew through some of the thickest tires in a days worth of going at it.

I use an old burlap sac folded and then wrapped in duck tape and that works great for me I just need to get a better spring, right now i am using a spring from an old trampoline from the neighbors yard. (they were throwing away the trampoline) but i figgured he would stretch it out so i picked up a bunch of them and just change them out when it gets too stretched out.

I read not to use a rope due to the fact that pieces can fall off and find their way into the dog's lungs. Has anyone else heard of that?

Peices of this heavy duty rope I have come off in strands.....the dogs have not attempted to swallow them and they drop them by their own. However when they have their mouth full of strands they pulled off I pull them out of their mouth and put them in a bucket out of the way. It really isnt that big of a problem, all other substances will do the same I presume.

To gain defintion and strenght, what object for tugging has worked best for your dog and how often do you work him/her?
