I'm sorry but I cannot overlook this statement. That to me sounds blatantly pro-PETA, pro-BSL. If every animal is spayed/neutered in 15 years we will have no animals. Is that really the solution. Things arent so bad in my area, because we have a non-profit (not the HS who is benefiting at the animals expense) but a private company who spays/neuters and educates many people upon the problems with overpopulation. We have very few animals killed each year because we have educated the public about breeding, enabled free/spay neuters in this area, and quite frankly....we make life a living hell for BYB's trying to make a quick buck. I see no reason that will not work in other areas-because it works here. Sure, my area does kill a few animals every year....but its not so massive I'm losing sleep over it. I do my part, others do their part, and it works out fine. Altering every single animal so they can be "liberated" is bullshit.

  2. I am not pro-PETA, and not pro-BSL. I'm pro-Pit Bull. Drastic times call for drastic measures. We may lose some freedoms along the way, but we need that in order to save the dogs we love. We are preaching to the choir on this site.

Sorry this is my first post but Its time we all did something.

    - Mandatory Spay and Neuter Laws for anyone who isn't a certified, licensed, professional breeder

Who chooses You, me or the animal rights idiots . Its not practical and another invasion of our rights. Here is an alternative how about PETA use some of there tax free 80 million a year and have free spay neuter clinics in every state once a month and help solve the overpopulation problem instead of persecuting innocent people.

    - AKC allows dogs to compete in the show ring that are spayed and neutered (Stupid Rule)

There is nothing wrong with dog shows its the judges and breeders who influence any breed, The idea is to pick the best representations of the breed to go on with, and yes its a pity that's not what happens. There are plenty of fun shows weight pulls and agility events for altered dogs without being in specific breed conformation events.

    - All dogs and cats must be licensed and microchipped

What a great idea while we are at it why dont we up our taxes, Make it law that no dogs can stay on chains and we have to keep all our pets in the house better yet lets build them their own house.

    - Back Yard Breeding should become illegal (Fines or Jail Time)

What in you opinion is a back yard breeder ? If the price is enough on pups and people will pay it, then you feed the dogs steak and lobster , that certainly would remove the BYB status.

    - Dogs should be sold for a minumum of $1000 to weed out owners who cannot afford the dog in the first place.

Once again price isn't going to do anything , in fact I think the higher the price the more BYB and mills you will find. If there's more money to made, more people will breed, more will WANT to breed because they will think there is a fortune to be made in puppies.

I do understand and complement you for coming up with ideas. While I don't agree with them it is a start to trying to help. How about if every body who has a Bulldog website pull their sites down, breeders could breed what they need for themselves and close friends and cull the rest. If breeders simply went back to the old methods of culling the pups that they didn't want or need there would be a lot a less in shelters and back yard breeding operations. One thing is for sure all dog owners need to band together to help the fight against all the breed specific legislation bans coming up, it doesn't really matter if you have game bred ,blue bred or poodles once our dogs are gone it will the others next. Quite honestly I don't think its about the bulldogs anyway that's just the easiest place to start for those who want to control every aspect of our lives.

I guess 2 things in summary; your ideas sound not a lot better than some or the animal activist in telling people what they can and can't do. And while I strongly believe in taking good care of my dogs, good housing, quality feed and attention ,they are dogs not people, plain and simple, and they have what rights I grant them.

  4. Adam, I truly like what you wrote, especially all the sarcasm. I admit, I don't have all the answers, but I think if we are going to fight this battle, we need some common ground to stand on. Your second to last paragraph sums up everything nicely. Thanks for taking the time to reply to the post.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

Id like to add something about not letting spayed /neutered dogs compete. Allthough I am quite aware of WHY they have conformation shows (with a true working breed there is less focus on perfection of standard than perfection of working ability)

I think conformation showing gives MANY people an excuse to not fix their dogs. Just because a dog obtains a title in conformation doesnt make it breeding material. Since alot of dogs champ out before they are 2 yo.. I think that while fixed dogs shouldnt compete with unfixed, there should be more classes at a dog show to allow them to compete for points. This would end the excuse "well I didnt want to breed" or "its a show dog" when all it has is a couple 3rd place ribbons!!

I realize what good is a fixed dog.. but are we not trying to combat overpopulation?? Im not saying to make it madatory, Im saying that registries and clubs should instead give more oppurtunities to support the fixing of dogs.. Make it easier for people to choose that path

I AGREE !! When we had our female spayed me and one of my co workers were bored so we each took half the vets in the phone book and called EVERY single one and guess what. $250 - $350 was the NORMAL range for a 40 pound female dog. IMO that is REDICULOUS and it is no wonder people dont have it done. If it was AFFORDABLE I am sure more people would have it done. But at roughly $300 for a non lifethreatening surgery I can see why people dont do it. If I didnt have an intact male here I would not have had her spayed.

Hey Rockstaedy, would'nt it be great if working breeds had to have some kind of working titles before being able to show in conformation.

no lol because i like to show my dogs as pups, too lol but it would be nice if they had to get working titles before being bred

No body does have all the answers if we did, we wouldnt have this overpopulation problem ;) The only way we can get closer to a reasonable outcome, is if we all debate issues in a responsible manner and share our ideas . That is, after all, what this site is about-sharing ideas and information to better our breed.

So champion show dogs are the only ones worth breeding, and every one should be bred and their puppies peddled to no end???? I am sure everyone who has a nice conformation show dog understands genetics and should easily be able to produce great dogs because they have a peice of paper that says champion on it so their dog is "worthy" of breeding. The real reason and purpose of these dog shows should be to have fun with your dog and hopefully encourage people to take care of their dog and keep it fit, not to mention give an outlet for APBT owners to show John Q. Public a legitamate activity they can compete in, that these dogs are not just vicious killing machines, and that in the hands of responsible owners are a wonderful breed. Does being spayed change the dog's structure??? Last time i checked i don't think it does, so why should that matter in a conformation show??? Why does everything you do with your APBT have to be a justification for breeding???

I never said EVERY show dog should be bred but you are a moron if you don't know that conformations shows are for judging breeding stock. They have specific fun matches as well as obedience, agility ect. that altered dogs a welcome to compete in. It doesnt make sense for altered dogs to compete and be judged for breeding stock for the future. IMO a dog should have working titles as well as conformation titles and be tested for genetic diseases before being bred. A paper that says champion isnt enough.

You would be surprised.....there are cities that do infact have a gaurdianship law for pets. However I do not support this....to much grey area.

This is probably the only thing that I would agree with....with the exception of the pet being a petbull.....

REALLY though, I think there needs to be more free spay and neuter clinics. People can't afford to have their animals fixed and they can't afford to care properly for litters but they love their pets. At an animal rescue seminar I attended the statistics were that "poor" families actually spent more time and took better care of their pets then "wealthy" families. Just because someone is struggling does not mean they should not have an animal. Having a good pet is therapeutic and everyone should be able to keep a pet as long as they are meeting the pet's needs. I worked for spay/neuter clinics and the owners are extremely grateful, they love their pets and there is nothing more effective then simply altering animals.[/QUOTE]

Then every single one that hits the door, should be euthinized!

Drastic measure, your ok with the loss of more freedoms? You think "WE" need that?

You gotta be fuckin kiddin me....

NO, I don't need that, I do not support the open adoption of APBT or sale of the APBT to the public.

    preaching to the choir....that's ironic.

Where does one draw the line at loosing freedoms? Loosing a few freedoms so save something else is is exactly what legislators are saying to enact BSL- loose the freedom of owning bulldogs to "save" the public!

Let's face it, the circle has been open for too long. Time to close it up & "dispose" of the garbage.

To get back on topic. . .

How would we plan on approaching legislators to give some of these ideas a thought? Free Spay & Neuter (Or at least low cost) for the public and rescue groups sounds like a good start.

so you're saying a conformation title doesn't qualify the dog for breeding, but you also say that conformation shows are soley for judging breeding stock.....what sense does that make?????

  18. GSDbulldog

    GSDbulldog CH Dog

Pitangel, conformation titles alone are not enough for a dog to be bred. There are other areas of a dog too. Breeding only for conformation can & will ruin a breed. I believe miakoda recently posted an article about what breeding for the showring has done to various terrier breeds.

    Here's the link: http://www.terrierman.com/rosettestoruin.htm

However, conformation shows are a tool is judgeing breeding stock. Showing spayed/neutered dogs doesn't make sense when there are so many other activites to compete with your dog in.

    Oh My.....LOL

I enjoy bringing my young dogs out to show, however their work doesn't begin untill their grown.

My dog's don't deviate from the standard and I may not always bring home a ribbon..... atleast I got a reciete that shows I was there :)

Trust me, I'm VERY aware of it all. Breed overpopulation, BSL, at risk owners, ect. It's just as a matter of basic philosophy. I don't like big government for reasons I've stated. Any problem they try to fix, they often make worse. And in dog law almost always make worse. A lot of people abuse their kids and there are laws against that but it hasn't stopped it.
Education is key but its very slow. As a Pitbull owner I hope some other breed catches the fancy of the at risk owner and becomes the new "fad" dog for them.
I just flat out don't think you can solve problems of this sort by passing more laws. Just look at what prohibition did to stop excessive drinking.
