Out where I live it is a fairly quite rual neighborhood type place. The lots are quite large so it is almost countryish. Well, one of our neighbors has a yellow labrador retriever and a Great Pryneses, (Huge 100 lb white hairy dog). The Pyraneese is a guarding type of dog I've learned. This neighbor doesn't contain their dogs. Luckily my yard is enirely fenced and they cannot get into the yard, however I do like to take my dogs out of the yard and into the woods for some good exercize. This pyreneese wanders out into the woods and trys to attack me. I've called Animal Control several times and to no avail. They apperently cannot catch him when he runs off into the woods. I've tried talking to the owner, which did no end very well. And I've talked to several other neighbors about this issue. They all agree with me that this large aggresive dog is a nuisance. It has come down to me carrying my bb gun pistol along with my break stick on our outings. I've shot the dog several times, however the bb & pellets don't affect him much. I've been thinking of of bringing a real gun out and just popping him one next time I see him out there. (Except that I don't own an actual gun.) I know a couple of other neighbors are considering this, they told me that dog may "dissapear" sometime soon. I just know if I get caught with that gun out in the woods with out a licence (sound will probally atract attention) I'm gonna get fined and thrown in jail. But, the this dog is an absolute menace. The only reason it hasn't bitten me yet is because it is afraid of my little 46 lb. boy Jaha. As long as I have Jaha with me he keeps his distance. The lab is no better and actually got close enough for Jaha to almost get him. I smaked the dog with the stick and it backed off. I will not quit my walks. I'm allowed to walk through the woods all I want, it is the dogs themselfs that are the problems. I've even tried differant paths and those 2 dogs are there everytime... I have been going more and more infrequantly, but Jaha looks forward to his walks every afternoon and gets this horribly sad look on his face. What do you think I should do? Keep trying to call Animal Control or take it into my own hands?

  2. Hello there Flamingo. Here is what I would do in your situation:

First, call animal control and ask to have them make a report (you already did this).
Second, call the police and ask them to follow up on the report.
Third, Write and send a certified letter to the owner of the dogs stating your case.
If nothing happens to resolve this issue, go to step number four.
Fourth, do your regular walks and if you are confronted by this dog(s) while with your dogs, order it around (rather than have your dog stare it down into submission). If this god(s) does not submit, go to step number five.
Fifth, you know this dog is human aggressive, he will not listen, and owners will not listen, so allow your dog(s) to protect you. Dogs were domesticated to protect and serve, allow them to do so for you. I know, I know, this is not ideal but neither is your situation. If the dog is a threat to humans and nothing has been done, release your athlete and once the dog is trying to run away, use the breaking stick. Sorry if you do not feel this is proper but what I suggested would be my response to the situation.

IMHO.... the legal thing to do just to cover your a$$ would be to talk to your other neighbors and get them to sign a petiton and bring it to the dog owners and see what happens, but that is what i am suggesting, not necessarily what i would do. All i can say is i see two dogs going for a long walk.......

Rocky's Human - I've tried the police. They forwared me to animal control. Unless the dog actually bites me, they won't do anything.

Haven't tried the certified letter. I might try that, but it may take a while. *sigh*

I afraid to let Jaha at him. While I have no doubt in my mind Jaha knows what to do, I doubt his ablility to do it. This dog is probally close to 130 lbs. A HUGE male. Jaha is only about 46 lbs. I know a bulldog that took one of these pyrneses about a month ago (an accident), however this bulldog was about 65 lbs. compared to a 130 lb. male. And the lady trying to seperate the two was bitten by the pyranese 4 times, her bulldog had the pyr's ear. And I certainly wouldn't do it on my own... No way I could handle all that by myself. Maybe I otta call her and see if her bulldog would like a pyr lunch, lol.

Who are you talking to at Animal Control? Have you talked with the manager yet? Make sure you go to the top, and suggest using live animal traps, they work great. If they still won't help, tell them you are going to lodge a formal complaint with your local, government, municipality whatever runs your local government( we have MP's) But you have to follow up. Call the next in line and complain, and keep going up the levels until something is done. It's your government, they serve you, make them do their bit.

Make sure that everyone you talk to, knows that these dogs are menacing you and other people and you are afraid for your children. Now, call ALL your neighbors that feel the same and have them do the same thing. After about 10-15 phone calls daily,to all the above mentioned avenues, they'll do anything they can for you.

i can think of a thousand things..but none i can post..maybe got a front lawn..spread some garbage out ..take some pictures when the dog is smelling it and take him to court...i think a camera is your best choice..a 45 would be mine.really all you have to do is tell animal control...i want to record this conversation ..and ive told you the problem so many times bla bla bla..and im recording you so i can hold you liable when my child is bit..once they feel they maybe liable they will remove the dog..

  7. Well, you stated noticing this dog is already somewhat submissive towards Jaha. This tells me that if your dog defended;) you from an attacking dog, attacking dog will cur out quickly. Your friend got bitten b/c she attempted to separate the dogs before dominance was founded. The other dog was not ready to admit the bulldog was dominant. If you ever come into this situation, calm down and wait until the other dog is attempting to run away not sooner. This may take 1 min, 5 min, maybe 10 or if the other dog is conditioned possibly 15 min. Not too many "other breeds" will stay with a bulldog that long. It is not in their nature.

OK, the police and AC are no help. Here is another suggestion: Call them better yet visit thm both, record names and batch numbers of the people you speak to and let them know you are recording their information. This may be what "motivates" them to act. In addition, take a camara with you in your walks. Record this dog and his behavior. Do not record if your dog defends you.

  8. There is no need to tell anyone you are recording a conversation. Federal law states that a phone conversation may be recorded by any of the "parties" in the conversation but not a third party. This means if guy A and guy B have a conversation, either A or B may LAWFULLY record it, but Guy C cannot record it.

I think coming up front asking for name and batch numbers while informing them you are recording their information in case something happens to you in the future will motivate them into action.

I kind of have a similar problem. We live out in the country and our neighbor has free roaming dogs. A black lab and some kind of collie I think. Anyway, I can't walk down the road without the collie following us. He's a friendly dog, but is just a pain in my ass. He wanders all over the road, running here, running there, etc...It's hard to walk my dog because he's constantly running and hitting the end of the lead, trying to get to the other dog. When cars come by, the collie just sometimes stands there and faces them down and won't move. I just hate the thought that people may think it's my dog and call A.C. on me. But I always keep my dogs secured. Then it follows me back to my house and I can't work my dog because they are constantly wrestling each other. One thing I'm afraid of though is what might happen when/if my dogs turn on. They are just pups now, but what about a year from now when the collie comes prancing into my backyard with two bulldogs outside?

When I lived in New Mexico this was a common occurance. Most dogs were roaming free in my area and neighbors were spaced far apart. This is a crappy situation. It IS Animal Control's job to take care of this issue and I am very suprised that they are not taking it seriously, especially if this is a huge dog that is a danger to humans. I would contact the media immediatly, the news papers and the local news. That is somthing that has been done before in my old area. If this does nothing and you can't talk any sense to Animal Control staff and supervisors than try local humane groups. In my old area animal control did not seem to care much, we had a local shelter that was private and that was the best step, however he would had no authority over owned animals.

I wouldn't turn it to my dog either, your dog probably would do the job but I would also be afraid of paying my own vet bills and being caught in the middle of a dog fight alone.

If this were my old area (in NM) and these issues were common, neighbors would verbally tell the owner that if the dogs were not controlled they would disappear and that is just how it is because you have every right to walk down the road and not have to worry about yourself or your children. Eventually the dog will have to be rid of the neighborhood if the owner continues to ignore everyone. In my old area everyone loved dogs but if they are agressive towards people and the word is spreading while the owner does nothing... the dog(s) are gone. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying some people feel that they do what they have to do to keep their family safe.

    Good luck with that situation.

I would in no way, shape or form allow the two to fight. As tempting as it is, you will probably just end up w/ vet bills (yours & possibly their as well) & it will give the breed another black eye. Yea, I know the Pyr is at fault, but we all know who will be blamed.

Seeing as you don't own a gun, try finding out the Pyr's favorite hangout & then leave some tasty dog food laced w/ some "bye-bye juice" (anti-freeze) for him. That may take care of your problem.

Now let me say I am not an advocate of offing anyone's pet. But if the animal is a menace & you have tried all the legal avenues, something must be done before someone gets hurt.

As a side note, I do not notify owners of a pesky pet. I did that once & when the someone else got sick of the dog & shot it, guess who the law came to see? That's right - me.

I asked the officer of the dog was dead. He said me it wasn't. I told him "Then you know it wasn't me, b/c if it was, I'd have killed it!!!" lol ...

I think I'm leaning toward the "bye-bye" juice. This dog issue isn't new. This has been going on for months... Animal Control & police aren't doing anything. I really just want to get rid of this dog. Don't want media and attention, just want this dog gone. I don't want AC to say, "Don't let your dog be loose" and fine them. I want the dog GONE.

Oh and Rocky, the pyr in that fight was screaming for its life. ;) NOT a dominace thing. My friends female had that dog by its ear and wasn't letting go. The big pyr was trying to swing her around, get her off, and run for it. The female bulldog was the one not letting go. And it was the pyr that started the fight. The pyr left some nasty scars on both the female bulldog and her owner though.

  15. Give the dog a lead injection.there is no reason in making it suffer with poison, just do it quick and painless and let the wild animals and bugs eat the remains.problem solved!

  16. the_flamingo

    the_flamingo Top Dog

Injection? Like a needle? That mean I have to be able to get close to the huge aggresive dog, weed through the fur, and stick it. No freaking way. I may want it gone but I'm not stupid, lol. The suffer thing though. Your right. I don't want my dogs to go out that way, and I'm sure no wants theirs to go out that way either....

Gonna try animal control a few more times. Call everyday for a week. If nothing happens tell them I'm going to file a greviance. Bet that will get their attention. ;)

LOL!!! No, not a needle. A 12gauge, 3in slug should do the job.

I think that's what he was trying to say.

  19. I don't agree with poisoning dogs. I have seen what it does to an animal and would not use this method on my worst enemy. It is not quick, it is not painless. Two shots on the head is a very human way to do it (just bringing something from another thread hehehe). I stand by my suggestion, if you are going to call, get names and batch numbers before starting to explain your situation.

Otherwise, allow your dog to do its job/duty. If a big bully continued to harrass you, wouldn't you let your boyfriend confront the a-hole?

Where I come from...a loose dog that is causing a problem seems to make good friends with a 12 gauge. And I know you aren't that far away from me Flamingo. :)

BUT I would let the owners know one more time that this is an on-going problem and you'll have the dog removed by AC if they cannot contain it. Threaten them politely.
