Very bad day!!

Today was one of the worst days ever. As we (my wife, 14 month old daughter, Azul and I) were on our daily morning walk I saw a woman walking her Mastiff on the other side of the street. I then told my wife to pick Elisa, our daughter, up since I just had a bad feeling. Well, it was with good cause because when the Mastiff saw Azul he went crazy. He charged at us, pulling the lady like a doll towards us. That dog pulled this lady across the street like it was nothing. They almost got hit by a car, which I wished they had for I would not have had to do what I did. As the dog got closer I ran to a Pick up truck that was parked on the street and threw Azul in the trucks bed so the Mastiff couldn’t get to him. I did this because I thought that he was only going after my puppy (4 ½ months). Well, was I wrong. After he saw he could not get at Azul he turned his attention to my wife and daughter. Keep in mind that the owner of the dog was still being dragged by this dog. All my yelling at the lady was of no use because she did not speak English and I don’t speak very much French, especially when I’m all pissed off. So this dog starts charging at my wife and daughter. I run and try to get the dog to somehow rush me, but he ignores me. My wife jumps on top of a little ass European car to try to stay off the reach of the dog. Well, he jumps on the car and grabs a hold of my wife by her leg and begins to shake her. My wife lets go of our daughter, who then falls from the top of the car to the ground. I will never forget the sound of both my wife and daughter yelling and crying. I run over to my daughter and pick her up and look for someone to hold my daughter to help my wife. So, I yank the leash away from the lady and I hand her my daughter. This lady is also screaming and crying. What can next was horrible. Some might bash me but my wife was getting mauled by an out of control dog and I was filled with rage and concern. I began to punch, kick and do anything else to get the dog to let go but he wouldn’t. I then pulled my knife out, which I carry with me when I walk because I’ve been robbed before and started to stab the dog. I stabbed him 7 times before he let go of my wife. Once he turned his attention to me I stabbed him 2 more time on the neck. At that time I felt nothing but rage and wanted nothing more than to kill that dog and especially his owner for what was happening. I now can’t help but feel sorry for that dog. I feel sorry for him because if his owners cared for him they would have socialized him better. They could of also had been walking him with a prong collar. Even better; the lady should have never been walking a dog which she can’t control. I’ve never thought that I would kill an animal in such a manner, but my first response was to protect my family. Once the Belgian police arrived, I was not placed under arrest or anything because they obviously saw what had happened to my wife and daughter. My daughter got minor scrapes on her face but we were more concern with the fall she took off the car. It seems she’s fine but my wife got 39 stitches. I already got in touch with a lawyer and will be seeing him on Monday. Now, the guilt is killing me for what I did, but there was no other thing that I could have done to get that dog to stop. I kicked him, punched him, pick his rear legs up and he still wouldn’t let go. And even if I had gotten him to let go, he would have charged me. Also, he let go only after being stabbed 7 times. This dog had something major wrong with it. I feel sooooooo sorry for that dog though. What else could I have done? What would you have done? I really some input because I’m dying here. My wife obviously thinks I did what I had to do. My heart goes out to that dog.

I'm really sorry you had to go through this. And I also hope your wife and daughter are going to be OK. Thank God that you had a knife with you and the presence of mind to use it in a tight situation. You did what had to be done and handled the situation as well as it could have been handled. Thank goodness no one was killed. I've been in situations where I was walking my (adult male) dog and had someone walking their HUGE monster dog on a piece of string. Not very fun, luckly things for me never came to that. If it did having and adult I'd just let my dog go at the out of control dog. But it stinks that the woman in question was so stupid. She's the one who should feel quilty. One last thing. Think how you would have felt if your pup or worse wife or daughter had been killed by that dog. You did good.

Sorry about that, but you did the right thing. IMO. You shouldn't feel guilty at all,Pennsooner is right., that lady should feel guilty about what happened to your family. Good job in handling a potentially fatal accident.

I hope your wife and daughter will be ok. Do not feel bad if it was me and I had a knief I would have slit that sob's throat.

  7. I am so sorry you and your family had to go through this. You did the right thing. I would have done the same in your situation. What happened to the dog is not your fault but the fault of its irresponisble owner who should have trained the dog and never walked the dog if she had no control. Thank God your wife and daughter are ok and thank God you and Azul are ok. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Just remember you did nothing wrong. You protected your family and that always comes first.

I am sorry to hear you and your family had to go through such a horrible experience.

You should NOT feel guilty for your actions. You protected your family as a husband and father should.

The person who should bear the guilt is the owner of the mastiff. Her irresponsibility and negligence almost took the lives of your wife and daughter.

I have no doubt that my husband would have reacted the same way that you did if presented with a similar situation.

I think any of us, in that given situation, would have reacted in a similar manner: grab the first "weapon" you see, and use it!!!!!!

I can understand your guilt, but think of it in terms such as this, what WOULD have happened furthur, had you not done what you did??????????period!!!!!
Yes, sadly, the owner couldn't maintain control, but as ALWAYS, it falls back onto the owner, as it should! Had you not ended that situation, something MUCH worse, could have arisen the next time, so feel good about your actions. You probably saved someone's life, down the road. I truly believe, everything happens for a reason, and I'm sorry for your horrible ordeal. But, that owner should be feeling the guilt, NOT you, my friend....
You did the right thing. That dog, yes, was an accident waiting to happen, and your number got picked.
Hugs to your girls, and good for you, for protecting them!:)

I doubt that you will hear anyone criticize you for what you did. I'm so sorry that your family had to go through such a traumatic experience. Don't question yourself or your actions. You did the right thing. Best wishes to your wife on her recovery, and kisses for your child for having to witness what she did.

I'm so sorry for you all.
    God Bless

It dosn't matter if he let go after 7 times. He was trying to kill your family. You are justified. It says alot about you that you can feel pity for that creature, after such a horrible experience. Don't guilt yourself over it. You saved your family. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

Thank you all for concern and for helping me feel a lot better. My wife is doing as good as one can with a messed up leg and Elisa is acting like nothing happened to my amazement. I really thought she was going to tramatized and was going to be afraid of any dogs, including Azul, but she's not. She still treats him like her little brother. As for the owner of the Mastiff, she and her family came over a couple of minutes ago to see how we were doing. It seems that's she's sincerely concerned with how my wife and daughter are doing. But given that, I was a bit irritated with her still. I hate having to think of all the "ifs" that could had happened. It's reassuring to here that most people would of done the same thing. Also, my wife, before this incident, thought I was crazy carrying my knife with me. Thanks for your support. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens next. The Belgian police took my knife away. I will probably only get busted for having the knife on me since it's over the legal limit. But, oh well. I can't see how they can get me on anything else. I feel a lot better now. Thanks.

You did what you had to do to protect your family and yourself. If you wife had to get 39 stitches, just think what could have happened if you did not do what you had to do.

My prayers go out to you and I can feel you anguish as a dog lover. But you had to save your family
