Game Bred Pits as House Pets?

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by kryptonite, Apr 24, 2006.

  1. I was wondering what people's opinions were on this? I've seen a lot of people that only keep them as outside pets and it doesn't seem like a lot keep them in the house except for at night. Are there any problems as keeping them as house pets? Too destructive, maybe? I'm still researching them so I don't really know. I have friends with pits from the pound but nothing game bred.

Thanks for any insight into this.

I would like to hear the answers on this too because i kinda was wondering the same thing.. I think most people cant fit all there dogs in the house so they keep them in the yard and keep one as a housepet or rotate them. There are alot of people that have them in there house though.

I don't see why a gamebred dog can't be a house pet.I do see why it matter what/how it was bred if it has correct training and time put into it

It's all in what you get them used to. I have seen them both ways, and both ways they were ok.

  5. my dog is game bred she is a house ped

  6. I read an article awhile back and the guy who wrote it said that he'd never advise keeping a game bred pit in the home. Anybody have problems that are out of the ordinary, or was this guy just blowing smoke? I can't find the article but he was saying they're very high strung, think large jack russels on speed, I think that was what he said.

My Inside Guy Is Gamebred, Though All Of My Dogs Get Some Inside Time, He Is The Designated "house Dog".

I See No Problem W/this At All, As Long As They Are Getting The Proper Exercise That They Need. Ive Known Many People W/good Dogs That Had Them As House Pets, I Think Its Good- Lets You Are Your Dog Get A Closer Bond With Eachother; Which In My Oppinion Makes Your Dog Want To Perform All The More For You.

They can "appear" to act high strung, if that's not what they're used to. Hence, that's when people do, what's called the "pitbull shuffle" when the dogs get rotated around. If they're not accustomed to bein indoors, it's only natural that they'll be acting differently, "cagey" almost. If they're introduced to the house at an early age, and then routinely let in and out, their anxieties about being indoors should settle some.

Good Post Suki. The Female In My Sig Is This Way. Her Bellymate Brother Is The Inside Bulldog Most Of The Time. I Bought Him When He Was Younger And Get Him Use To Being Indoors, And Hes Fine.
His Sister (in The Photo) Was Farmed To Me When She Was A Little Older, She Has Open'd Up Alot, But She Is Still Quite Shy And Timid Inside, And Trys To Hide In Her Crate Alot, But Take Her Outside, And She Is A Freak Lol She Is Almost 2 Comp Diff Dogs.

All Of My Dogs Get "potty Trained" When I Get Them Young. If I Get An Older Dog They Arent Really Potty Trained (as Most Of Them Have Just Decided That Marking Their Spot Inside Is 'fun'), But They Still Get Some Inside Time.

Oh And Destructive Behavior Generally (i Say Generally Because Some Dogs Just Looove To Destroy Things Lol) Comes From Bordem, And When They Have No Outlet To Expend Their Energy In. Give Them Plenty Of Stimulation/exercise, And They Should Be Fine :)

Nothing wrong with it-if you have the right dog and understand what it is and treat it as a gamedog needs to be treated. What I mean by this is-you need to understand it needs to get out and excersise ALOT, and you absolutely positively cant do things like leave doors cracked, or "I'm gonna leave him with running loose, he wont bother Fido upstairs". Jack Russels on steroids-well some can be. Some dogs are just completely insane balls of energy, and will destroy a house in no time....most dogs will do fine in the house, but some just like it better outside. A housedogs personality, should be a little more laid back, and easy going.

All my Pits, but 1, are from the pound. They all live in the house, sleep, eat, & play together. I don't leave them outside alone, at all. Three are working dogs & need to be watched over. When I leave, they go too. I think they do very well in-doors.

My APBT is an "inside with mommy" girl. And that works well as long as nothing infringes upon her territory. As long as I have Ava, I can not have another pet. She will kill it. Be it dog, cat, ferret, husband... Anything.

My APBT isn't gamebred, but I can tell you that she's an excellent house dog. If a gamebred dog is anything like my girl, then its totally workable. You have to respect the dog's natural tendencies and plan accordingly, but they are smart and adaptable to many situations.

  14. Even a Pit from the pound can be gamebred.....Jimmy Boots was in a pound...From my point a few is a game bred not only a good house pet....its the best you can get! But like with all other strong dogs you have to be carefully around other dogs and animals...special strange dogs. The very most real game dogs are very humanfriendly.....and thats the biggest + you can have if you own a strong dog.

Listen, A dog is a dog. Just because its (what people here say) "gamebreed" doesnt meen that its not a dog. They are just as easy to train for good behaivor in the house as any other dog.

Another reiteration on what i have posted.

You do not have a "gamebreed" APBT unless it was breed to do what was originated for this breed. This will shortin everyones concern on the word "gamebreed" I hope. This way its not tossed around like the word APBT. In order to have a "gamebreed" dog you must game-test your dog and the dogs before him/her. If you will, call it an APBT, AmStaff, or mutt, but dont call it "gamebreed". This will pretty it up for all those pet-bull owners that talk as though their dog is "gamebreed".

I don't see why you couldn't keep them inside, as long as it was done right, and given lost of exercise..

I've kept gamedogs in the house for as long as I've owned them.
