Breeding to a well bred cur?

I was recently reading some old articles and letters about Don Mayfield and his Nigger dog. Now without knocking the dog on his production record... he was a 6 minute cur and rumors he quit during a schooling roll as well.

But yet Mayfield chose not only to breed him but to base his yard off of this 6 minute cur... which I guess was a hell of a thing to do in my book to take a chance like that hoping he'd produce.

So what's ya'll's opinion on that... would you have took the chance?

thats like a one in a million shot but hell there are performers and then there are producers, then what we all aim for is a performer that can reproduce itself. this kind of dog is the hardest to obtain.
i think the best way is best to best within a loose bred family cause it gives you the chance to tighten it up when it finally clicks for ya JMO

seems like lots of old timers did that Pete Sparks mentioned that in a article once stating good dogs may produce worth a dam and cold dogs may produce well...look at Tab?

The thinking behind it was that if the dog had good dogs backing him/her up in their ped, then it was worth the chance to see what they produced, based only on their pedigree, even though they were poor dogs themselves.

But would YOU have taken a shot on a 6 minute cur?

In these days why take the chance, not worth it, but back then things were different and it was of to ok have 50+ dogs without people questioning you. So you could keep them all and see what you got.

I'm glad he bred him because Nigger turned out some good dogs, but without knowing what I know know about the dogs he produced,no I wouldn't of bred him,if anything I would of shot him.But he produced some good ones,so you never know what kind of pups a dog will put on the ground.

Sometimes I think the dogs aren't the most important part of the game; it is the gossip and jealousy.
It is up to the individual the weed out the truth and then put some salt on it.

I guess the same can be said of his Dibo dog maybe... he was supposedly never touched. Never had a tooth in him... but he's in the back of alot of pedigrees today... maybe old crazy Don just had a good eye for bulldogs... maybe he was lucky.... maybe a combination of the two

DM was a bulldog guru who redfined the word dogman as a handler conditioner and breeder......just the mentioning of curs that were or are producers only gives arguement for the jackass' that cur breed for profit or stupidity.

    wow!!!
maby he did stop in six

this is a touchy subject cause theres probley alot of times you see rom this por that
and alot of the time it without 1x,2x,ch,grch

the reason being they were brood stock, no need to damn near kill the begining
if he/she has the foundation you want
you breed cull hard breed cull somemore

they had the freedom to do this and decide which dogs carried the traits they were looking for and wanted to carry on

frisco was a cold dog if im not mistaken
