What a mess. Worker to Worker. Performer to Performer. When you start breeding for money, looks or just because you're bored that's when the trouble starts.

Its a damn shame what those people have managed to do to those dogs. I always try to tell people whatever breed they're interested in to look into working stock and if those animals are too high energy (aka too much dog) then a dog is not what you need you want a nice cat or hamster.

I don't know about Akc so much but it is the same general idea. People show these Judges their dogs and pay for their opinions. Most of the judges don't know what they are doing. Put up dogs that are not worthy. Because they put them up for the win, and it only takes 3 major wins and 100 points in the Ukc to be a champion, the owners then figure they are worth breeding. Some do health tests, and some do not. When you actually work your dogs, health issues come to the surface pretty much right away.
Maybe this is part of the reason why the Akc breeders are now outcrossing amstaffs instead of linebreeding.
To me, man has ruined a lot of breeds. Any dog that can't breed naturally or have its own puppies naturally has no business breeding. God is trying to tell us something there. And those Cavalier dogs sell for outrageous amounts of money. I couldn't believe they get $2000 for a pet quality dog and had no idea they had all those problems. Not that I would buy one anyway. And the bull terrier was a much handsomer dog before man f'd it up. Way more functional too. I had seen something like that article on this site before named the Working Terrier Site or something like that. Very interesting.

My professor has been talking about genetic problems like that back in 2001. And that old judge doesnt know squat. His statement didnt make any sense. If a dog doesnt meet the standard in which he was originally created, then whats the point in having a physically lessor standard. Most of the genetic defects that were talked about would've showed up if the dogs were being bred for work ability. A German Sheperd would not have been able to heard successfully with hips that were offset that bad, thus, he wouldnt have been a good candidate for breeding. Labrador Retrievers that were used in the field would not have been able to be successful with eye problems. I think there are more genetic problems like these here in the US, because the only dog here in the states that is still used to do any work is the sheperd for police use. This is the one of the few countries that frown on dogs living outside. In my opinion, thats were the allergies come in to play, dogs that live outside threw all four seasons have a stronger immune system then those that live indoors. The only allergy a dog should have is a Bee sting allergy. Its amazing how our breed doesnt have many genetic issues other than cancer. Working dogs have superior genetics over show dogs.

our dogs dont have many health problems because of culling dogs with health problems

see they know they have health problems but try to overlook the fact instead of culling

for them breeds it just about irreversible you just about have to start mixing the breeds to try and fix the problem but then there would be no pure breed would there

This is true for the most part. These dogs are generally very healthy because they are a working dog and bred as such. The dogs that perform carry on and the ones that don't get culled. If a dog has crippling genetic disorders then it can no longer function and is useless. It is not still bred just because it has a nice shaped head.

Now some do breed for certain traits like size or color and those dogs have a higher risk of health problems.

Just about every breed has a show side and a working side and the people that work those dogs breed correctly and cull appropriately. These dogs generally look like completely different dogs than their show doubles. (I.e. The poodle, the daschund, border terrier, bedlington, german shepard, etc..)

Other dogs like the english bulldog and pug are in so bad shape I don't know if the breed can be saved. The only thing I can think of is outcrossing the e. bulldog until you get an animal that can breathe, perform, and above all mate properly.

i understand what the thread is about ,,BUT where do we as dogpeople see the ADBA "SHOW DOG" ending up ? i meen we know that the ADBA is being over ran with SHOWDOGS and DOG SHOW people ,, ( i am not saying its bad) but do you think that its right that a lot of the ABDA people that show dogs and work hard to produce the next ADBA ch to be looked at as something that is better than what the AKC or UKC is ? IMO there is no difference in the AKC show dogs or the ADBA show dogs if what they are bred for is the show ring .. one more question what kind of problems do you think the the ADBA show dog will end up with ?

I think the adba show dog would be more cancer ridden and most of the winning adba show dogs are around 45-55lbs, so I wouldnt be surprised if hip displasia starts to appear. Only time will tell.

That video is such a crock and they are just trying to support the ban of breeders. Not all breeder produce dogs with health issues. What you see in that video is many dogs who should not have been bred. If breeders still practiced culling and only bred the healthiest stock then these dogs would not have been born. Instead you see breeders trying to identify defective genes so they do not breed carriers to carriers. But they have no problem breeding that carrier to a non carrier of what genetic flaw they are trying to not double up on. That is where this is going all wrong, why not identify the genetic flaw and NOT breed that dog or cull? If they did that then these dogs would not have such bad issues. Our breed the gamebred APBT has mostly escaped this fate but as time goes on and culling is now taboo you are seeing more APBT's with health issues. Look what happened to the Am staff, now they have all types of health issues because of breeding programs not breeding only the healthy stock.
While it is sad to see those dogs suffer why are they not just putting them down? So many ppl try to save every life but the dog ends up suffering more in the long run. If anything that video should be a video on why to cull. JMO

Not sure how you out cross a breed that has a closed gene pool. I maybe wrong but I remember reading something that a well known kennel manager wrote about not being able to find dogs that do not have that redbolt dog all over the back of their ped.

I believe the ADBA show folks are helping to make sure you do not have to move to Mexico to own one of these dogs in 20 years and keeping these dogs as pure and honest as possible... If things do not change (take that as you may....) these dogs will be banned in the good ole U.S. of A.

In the UKC world for sure what most of us is tryign to do is to at least to get their dogs to be bred as working dogs and not just for beauty. If you are breeding a dog to perform what he is bred to do conformation should naturally go with it but as far as apbt goes you breeding for beauty that's when problems come in. I think as far as ADBA goes there is still a lot of people with the mentality of PRESERVING the breed but also trying to make it a little bit more modern. But we really do need the judges to comprehend they should be placing a bulldog not just a pretty APBT in the ring.
