Feeding raw bones to fast eaters

I am thinking about switching my dog to raw. The only problemis that he eats so fast. he will literally try to swallow the bone and all. Is there anything I can do to make him slow down? Is there anything I can give him as a replacement for the bones? Where would I be able to find cheap, quality meat for the food?

 

you could try to chop the bones in pieces?

 

I'm interested as to what answer you get. I, too, have this problem. I tried feeding it to my boy frozen, but he still swallows big chunks. and i don't want to sit and hold it all day. the only thing about grinding, crushing, or using pieces of bone is that you loose the benefit of keeping the teeth clean and the jaws worked.

 

Don't chop them up unless you don't want to teach him to chew. 2 choices, feed thing far to big to swallow, like whole chickens (take and refeed next feeding..) or hold the food while it eats. Your pup chews fast because it is excited, hold the food and don't speak to your pup or pet them, get them into a routine of slowing down. Its not easy but just feeding whole chickens will eliminate the problem.

 

thanks nah.uhh, but what should i do when he gets the whole chicken down just small enough to swallow? should i take it away and chop it? i don't wanna waste meat....

 

i hold the meat for my female ,she getting alot better.... and usually when you give them a hole chicken they chew it in small enough peices from the get go

 

my dog would leave me worried when I switched over to raw because she too would seem as if she would swallow the entire piece instead of chewing, maybe one or two bites and it was devoured. What I do now is I give them to her a bit frozen not completely but hard enough instead of just completely thawed and it works much better for my concern. She has learned to chew as we progress further into the raw diet now it may just take time especially for dogs who are use to kibble but I would recommend to give it slightly frozen and just keep a close eye it may look a bit upsetting to see them just swallow a rather large piece but as long as you here them give it a couple of chews it will digest just fine. :dogdrink:

 

some dogs just think every meal is their last. try feeding big enough meals that the dog would leave some behind even if it means fattening up your dog a bit.once they realise that the food they have isnt going anywhere they may calm down a bit. it sounds stupid but ive had a dog who literally breathes her feed in , and i had a friend take care of her for a while. when i came back the dog was a bit bigger than i would keep her at but plump and healthy happy dog when i got her back and her eating had changed one hundred percent still get s exited when its time to eat but, now is very patient and slow. he just feed her once a day and a big meal and she learned to just graze on it over hours.
your only problem is ants.

 

i was told big bones for chewing, and rins for eating, and find meaty ones first to give them, cause they tend to slowly tear it (so they do) mine anyway! or debone most of it and give bone after the meal? it all depends what your feeding, I'm referring to beef in this case.

 

Trust them. To be 100% honest, make sure the final meal is big enough they will have to start off chewing it apart. When it gets small to the point you know they will try to swallow, I used to have to turn my back or wash my hands, ie not pay attention, while they finished. If I was looking they would swallow and come looking for more. I had one pup would chew swallow choke spit it up and do it all over again, I learned to just let her figure it out. She would chew the thighs off and swallor the drumsticks. I've broken the legs, but try to keep the food item intacct.

At 7 months my guys seem to like crushing the bones more than swallowing the food now.
To answer your question, when feeding smaller items don't excite your dog, when I hold the food I let go after they've broken the bigger bones. When feeding large food I pet the dog occasionally, but never ever at the end of a food item. The last meal of the large item tends to be larger than the other meals so that they don't think they can swallow it when they begin. My older dogs are all cool tho, they get way better with AGe.
