Peoples views on training a Pitbull for protection

Discussion in 'Sports & Activities' started by Pitbull2010, Nov 30, 2010.

  1. What is everyones views on training a Pitbull to do man work? ...PP work for pit bulls, is it detrimental to the breed?

my opinion is that you shouldn't teach an APBT to bite a human, but on the other hand i have seen some pretty decent APBT that can do the job.

APBT's sould not be trained for protection, man work or what ever you want to call it. Dogmen(and women) have strived for years to breed away from manbiters. There is no place for them in todays climate. One manbiter is bad enough without training one for this purpose. There are plenty of other guardian breeds out there to chose from that have been bred for years to do a job of work. Leave the APBT to do what he does best and get another breed. APBT's have enough bad publicity without creating more.

I don't have a problem with it. I think we complain about people trying to tell us what to do with the dogs, then we do the same thing within our breed. How contradictory. If it is done as an organized sport, such as Schutzhund, then I have no problem with it. Training a dog for bitework and having a "man biter" are two completely different things.

I agree to an extent in that if it is done within a sport atmosphere it is ok i suppose however I see the op as talking about training to do personal protection and or guardian work and I personally disagree with that sort of thing as selective breeding has discouraged human aggression and guard dog type work. And going against 100 of years of genetics could confuse a dog and also with a drive like the APBT coupled with encouraged man aggression seems like a recipe for disaster and some negative headlines.

he said PP. schh and pp are two COMPLETELY different things. pp trainers do not care about commands nearly as much, and will praise a dog for killing a man. theyre trained to add the drive and aggression, where as schh is a driven game. you can clearly see the two differences in alot of PP trainers videos, specially when the dogs dont even know out. they train their dogs to go after a person whether youre there or not. THAT, my friend, is a man biter.

Will it do anything to enhance the popularity of the breed,or will it create more of a negative outlook upon them?

There's a million other breeds that can do it just as well if not better, and are bred for it.
That's how I view APBT's for PP, anyway, Schutzhund is just a sport and I want to get an APBT into it.

Big fail, why add another 'guard' breed when there are specifice breeds bred to do protection.

I agree that it shouldn't be done, but I also agree that training a dog for protective purposes is not the same as breeding manbiters. With that being said, I don't feel like the majority of Pit Bulls have the temperment for the job. In my 10+ years around the breed, I have never been on a yard that I couldn't walk right up and pet every Pit Bull there like it was my own dog. Maybe that is just my dumb luck, but it's the truth. I am just against it because I feel like accidents happen and Pit Bulls can do too much damage. Hell, now a days if somebody trespasses on your property and your dog bites them they can sue. So I wouldn't do it.

thread should of stopped after this post imo nothing more needs saying tha whats said above how many good dogs aint been bred from because of this fault. this is where the problem lies with people training these to be aggressive to look bad and mean and show aggression to there mates acting like a big man thats where the accidents then the bad publicty comes from a pbt that shows aggression towards human is a no no

  17. I mean, you could... but there are breeds who are much more suited for the job.

For me, bite work, yes. PP, no, that's why I got a Rottie.

My view is no,absolutely not. I don't even really like the breeds that are used for that all that much.Guard dogs really aren't my thing. But if someone wants a dog for that kind of work there are breeds already better suited for it.

  19. Wow a lot of responses since I last logged in. Just a curious question as my pit is trained in pp just because I take my Pitbull with me everywhere in the car and jogging at night. Luckily he has never had to seriously bite anyone. I have working presas but they remain on the property where as my pit is with me 24/7. I knew a lot of people would be against it and I wouldn't really recommend it either because they can cause a lot of damage and in most cases not as easily controlled... But I'm more then happy with my dog and what he would do to protect me... Thanks for the responses, just wanted to see Peoples views on it.

Dog in my avatar was home protection trained and good at it dont think i would ever try it again though i always had to have an eye on him always had to know where he was oh and you cant just take any old dog and say im gonna train my boy to protect the house either the dog has it in him to be that way or he dont you cant put whats not there (HA or gamenes). Oh and the old timers didnt want HA dogs because they felt it was a distraction in the box as there are three humans in there although i didnt have that problem wit him.
