It's a kinked tail -- we see them in Am Stafs fairly often and it tends to run in families. It's not "broken". Once I saw one that had been x-rayed and the vertebrae in the tail were oddly shaped and spaced. The closer they are up to the spine, the more likely the dog is to have spinal problems.

It's sort of a stigma to have produced them (mild ones get shown and win -- if real visible, hurts a dog in the ring) and many people will make an excuse and say the tail got "broken" -- most know better! It's genetic (have no idea of inheritance, it's quite widespread in Am Stafs).
It's the first thing I check as puppies are born -- run my fingers down that tail -- a kink will be there at birth and is easy to feel. Any irregularity you feel in the tail will only get worse as the dog grows.

A kink can be genetic, it can also be caused by overcrowding prior to birth, and yes even by injury. The tail that is normally between the pups legs prior to birth is sometimes around one of the back legs causing the kink to form in utero. So the question you should ask yourself is "Is this a genetic issue?" That can be determined by knowing your line. It is not a terrible thing and a piss poor reason to cull a dog if you ask me as it causes no long term issues in the majority of cases.

If you beleive the history of the breed a dog with an abnormal tail could be a throwback to the old english bulldog, Colby had bobtail dogs and to this day it pops up in his bloodline when bred pure. I have a male here who was born with a bobtail and one of his littermates has a kinked tail, its in the breed and to cull because of it IMO is foolish. Some dogs with crooked tails have been linked to other genetic faults when extensive testing has been done and if this is the case cull but a slight abnormality in the tail is not always a genetic fault.
