OHMIDOG! : Dogfighting “legend” Harry Hargrove sentenced to five years in prison

[IMG]A 78-year-old North Carolina man described as a “legend” in the dogfighting world was sentenced today to five years in prison, the maximum a federal judge could impose.

Harry Hargrove of Duplin County was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Raleigh on dogfighting charges he pleaded guilty to earlier this year.

Prosecutors had sought a sentence longer than recommended federal guidelines of 10 months to 16 months.

A federal motion says Hargrove has been involved in dog-fighting in the South for about 40 years. He told Judge Terrence Boyle he once had more than 100 fighting dogs, but he’d cut back to 35 by the time he was arrested.

Police found jumper cables used to electrocute dogs on the property, as well as a blood-stained fighting pit and other tools usually used to condition dogs for fighting.

All 35 dogs found on his property in April 2010 were euthanized.
“Dog fighting is an atrocious and unconscionable form of organized criminal activity that must be aggressively prosecuted,” Thomas Walker, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, said in a written statement. “The adverse impacts on society from such crimes – from the brutality inflicted upon the animals, to the desensitization of our youth, to increased drug, gun, and other violent offenses around the fights – cannot, and should not be, tolerated.”
[IMG]Hargrove was arrested last April after a lengthy investigation, during which he sold the dog at left, Hurricane Hugo, to an undercover officer.

In addition to Hargrove’s five-year sentence, the judge mandated three additional years of supervision after he is released.

This isn't the old days when it was considered a misdemenour and the cops turned a blind eye on some states.

The laws could not be clearer, fight dogs and you will go to jail no matter how old you are.

    The world has moved on.

If someone wants to test their dogs then their are legal ways such as hog hunting.

It's a shame. He would of been in less trouble if he killed his neighbor. The criminal justice system would of been looking for a plea bargain so they would have to do less work and try to keep space open in the prison.

You're right it is a bigger test. A dog weighing 40-60lbs on a massive Hog means the dog is reliable and will not back down whatever it is faced with.

What's the use of a 40lb dog that will turn it's tail and head for the hills when a larger predator threatens it's owner?

It's like having a bantamweight boxer or MMA fighter that can't deal with a monster outside of it's weight class.

I'd rather have a dog that was game for anything no matter the size.

My dogs only a mixed breed mutt but he doesn't care whether the dog is a Bull Mastiff or chihuahua he reacts the same. Had a dog in the past that was 49.5lbs 19.5" to the shoulder that would go after a speck of a dog on the horizon and didn't care what size the dog or animal was.

That's the spirit of a dog that will always serve you well and protect anything you need protecting.

I know pomeranians that will not back down to bigger animals. That don't make them game. Only one way to prove gameness in the sense that bulldog owners use the word and it's not with a hog that would rather be left alone or flee rather than be bothered by a dog. I know they can and will stand their ground but like any animal other than a game bulldog, it will run the first chance it feels it can escape. Gameness is something that is very hard to explain to folks who never may have seen it first hand but once you see it, you will never compare it to other animals again. Lol. Apples to oranges.

But what about a real world practical setting, not an artificial human rules Pit where the dog is allowed to turn and interfered with?

I mean a dog that can protect and is willing to sacrifice itself for it's owner not for sport, money or the love of fighting.

No of course not mate. I live in England and even if they made it legal tomorrow and I only had to walk 100 metres down the road to see a match for free I would not be interested.

Have seen a few rolls and matches on sporting dog sites out of curiosity and was hoping to get into it like I am into MMA but wasn't for me at all.

I can appreciate the wrestling ability and skill of the dogs but don't like seeing a dog shaking another dog by the neck and it being severely injured.

I get why people want to see who the best of the best is in a weight catagory, the training and care given that is involved, but just don't like to see dogs hurt.

I know this is maybe a very unpopular opinion and you may wonder why the hell I am even on here reading about the dogs.

Something special about a dog that will not back down to anything and has the fortitude to back it up, whatever the threat, dog, human, animal etc.

Re: OHMIDOG! : Dogfighting "legend" Harry Hargrove sentenced to five years in prison

I'm not against using them to hunt at all. Just saying it's different. Most dogs of any breed will protect its pack i.e. you the owner and family. That's instinctive to most all dogs breeds. Many can hunt and many can catch big game but but very few will continue when things aren't going their way. It's not the same when one is fighting for its life and will flee first chance it gets against an animal that is doing it for the enjoyment of what it was bred to do. These dogs Excell at most all venues you introduce them to but their main purpose is combat. Changing that purpose will change what the dog is. Been proven time and time again with many other breeds of dog. When you breed away from the original purpose you will start to have a different animal.

That's perfectly ok that you feel that way. Like trot said. It's not for everybody but while you see dogs getting hurt, understand they get just as mamed against a hog with tusks. It's just a part of work and it's a tough job being the best......
