By that measure the dogs you mentioned are a burke/hutton crosses. You seem to miss the point that most AMSTAFF are pure bred but are not fastlane. JP colby matched his dogs and bred best to best. He was aided by the fact that he bred off some potent match dogs from Ireland and England. Bloodlines come and go in the fast lane which will be the ultimate judge of the box dog. This is borne out by the excellent dogs campaigned in E.Europe Russia M.East F. East S.America P.I etc.....

Its the kennel behind the dogs that matters. 100 yrs ago Colby was the go to guy for box dogs....Times change.......

Everything goes in a circle and fires burn out with no fuel. A dog is a dog - Time is a test only few breeders are able to pass. like a 69 model -vs-todays model whos gonna get there the quickest?

Id rather have a dog off TG than any Colby bred dog....... But why bother when there are better CHAVIS/JOCKO/YELLOW dogs to give money to. If you trust the dude on the other end of the phone and your team trust YOUR judgement thats all that matters.

Its gotta have something to do with the men as well.. type of handler style of coach .. .. everyone knows to check the oil before you start your rig.. the biological machine is no different. Its the oldest pure strain and source of most bulldog strains. Your right, armitage and all show all kinds of colby for the behind the 4th gen of Braddock so the full 7gen ped would be full colby primarily in the back three. Ross' Red shows to be 1/8 colby on the 4gen and if you look at that nebbletts you see more along with fly of panama being pure colby. All old dogs .. like redboy KEY to todays stock. I dunno but other than Lightner, Feely, and Cocoran (spelling) colby dogs have stood the test of time with lil variance.

wouldn't you say this could have some promise? I mean the last time Sam was crossed into redboyjeep ..

I guess you have two kinds of breeders, those who preserve and protect the traditional heritage and those that are focused solely on winners. As it turns out winners can be no more than hard rough curs that few other bulldogs can hit their threshold, just as well as they can be the real deal. Its still admiring to see the colby dogs go all the way back to the early 1800s and have pure colby heritage to today. All the strains known by name like redboy are pure colby so everytime you see redboy that pure colby and jeep is half so by linebreeding and inbreeding stacking that name redboy, behind it is 256 ancestors of colby and jeep half as much but still your taking a dna block and splitting it in half adding it to itself over and over.. and theres no hot colby blood left.. hahaha it right there if front us. Those strains of colby seem to be doin pretty good. No you may not want to compete with a pure colby dog sure didn't stop the owner of redboy. In the right hands.. anythings possible.

Most dog men have their flavor by the way they win, just like boxing everyone has their favorite style. I just figure Colbys no different and all it needs is a lil kicker a lil refresher if you will..

If there is so much promise how come all the examples you use are from old dogs and nothing current? It doesn't matter how pure and old it is, that's not the way genetics work. Those dogs are genetically programmed to be friendly and have good conformation! If u keep the blood tight and are not checking for gameness and ability after decades you are gonna gonna get dogs without those 2 things consistantly!

oh you have to work them I live by that... no use in having a dog that is of no use..
redboy isn't that old in the scheme of time and genetics and by the way thats exactly how genetics work. I showed another dog that wasnt old and pure colby but I know nothing about him. All Im saying is people get full of themselves and forget that the dog they are linebreeding and inbreeding is pure colby. Redboy is a pure colby dog. IN all I don't think people have the patients for Colby dogs, because the late Colbys bred for what they referred to as sound game and not the fight crazy bulldogs. Gr CH Virgil what about him? http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/modules.php?name=Public&file=printPedigree&dog_id=11116
a current and very sound bulldog.

The only time to buy a colby dog bred by that family is when its made BIS/GIS at a convention in mexico city in front known dogmen.......

Until then Id keep my money in my pocket......rather get a mutt from a BYB that "works" what he breeds......At last the dude's being "checking the oil" once a month with the local bangers. That mutt is under no illusion as what he is on this earth for......It sure as heck wont be a rosette.

I think the Colby family played it's part as the core foundation for many family of dogs today and I don't think anyone here takes away from that. I think what most of us can agree on is that the vast majority of pure Colby has been bred for other things besides gameness. This is what you see in many Colby bred dogs of today 4+ generations without one single game tested dog in it. In order to do anything really with a pure Colby dog you would need to cross it back to a solid proven working family or strain to spice things back up again. They say gameness is hard to acquire and once you have it you have to work to maintain it or it's as good as gone. I tend to believe it always boils down to who bred the dogs and why as always with the right hands behind the dogs there will never be any question as to how far those dogs can go. But you can only build off what you already have if you are working with a family that's lacking gameness for several generations you are going to have to pull those traits from elsewhere. And in many cases most would rather just work with something that's already there with a solid consistency rather than trying to reinvent the wheel so to speak.

HH and Sadie pretty much covered what I was saying a couple of posts up^^... you gotta check the oil and thats what I was hinting at that the old school Colbys did so regularly as did heinzl in game test more than sanctioned matches from what I can get from the written word. Some where it petered out though didn't it? And your right about the most authentic Colby dogs being in Mexico and under a tight sheet at that. Its the oldest strain today you'd think people would keep it goin, but in many ways breeders get stuck in a corner genetically and finding the right out to refire that gene without diluting the strain is a very trick thing. Im a big chavis jocko fan but I gotta say that them southern family red nosed dogs known as buck are pretty good too, and I would love to have gr ch virgil to me this a dog that should have been used to refire the colby stock by going into colbys nikki or something colby himself had that was proven, just sayin. Seems like a waste of potential...

Again I think Joe Bingo, Sadie, and HH all hit the nail on the head its all part of the same swing.

Redboy is old bc you rarely see him in a four generation ped meaning in 2012 the dogs that made redboy are irrelevent. And there are tons of good dogs that are sound game dogs versus fight crazy. The colby dogs are not bred to be sound game dogs, they are bred to be well built pets. Gameness is hard to pass when you test for it and impossible when you don't so how on earth are dogs who haven't been tested in decades bred to be game dogs? Virgil is a good dog but his day has also came and gone. There are 1000's of good dogs working today, do you think its a coincidence you can only find dogs from the past and not very many at that which fit you're way of thinking?
